Palestinian FM: 'Israel should move to Canada'

Palestinian FM: 'Israel should move to Canada'

"One large Islamic nation should be established in the Middle East, and where will Israel go? It should go to Canada. There is much open territory there in which a Jewish state should be established," said the Palestinian Foreign Minster Mahmoud A-Zahar in a recent interview with Canada's Globe and Mail.

The interview was published just days before the visit of Canadian Foreign Minister Peter Mackay to Israel and the Palestinian Authority, in which Mackay refused to meet with Hamas leaders or with A-Zahar.

A-Zahar warned in the interview that Canada was endangering itself. In his words, Canada is liable to turn into an enemy of the Palestinian nation and the Islamic Movement as a result of its insistence on shunning Hamas and supporting Israel.

"What is Israel giving you? Nothing," he said in the interview.

"Is it that you want to be the tail of the American dog—this is your business—or do you want to be a national leader?"

The Palestinian minister then addressed his Canadian counterpart and asked, "Why do you refuse to meet with us? We are not man-eaters."

He then added that Hamas-members are not terrorists, but rather, freedom fighters, saying:"There is no difference between us and the French resistance to Nazi occupation during the second world war."

Not man-eaters? Just child-killers...and human blood drinkers.

What is Israel giving you? Here's an excellent video. Compare and contrast to the Hamas contribution to humanity.

Suspicious Packages Across Boston (5 Updates - Hoax)

[For updates, scroll down. Bottom Line: Blame Ted Turner.]

Suspicious objects found throughout Boston after morning bomb scare

Investigators found a device on the BU Bridge today "similar to the Sullivan Square" package that forced the closure this morning of northbound Interstate 93, said Jennifer Mieth, spokeswoman for State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan, whose office oversees the State Police Bomb Squad.

Like the item found at the Sullivan Square station, the BU package was attached to the underpinnings of the bridge.

"It was not an explosive device," she said of the suspicious item found on the BU Bridge.

[VIDEO: Suspicious package detonated in Boston]

Mieth said State Police bomb experts are now examining a another suspicious item -- similar in construction to the items found at Sullivan station and on the BU Bridge -- that has been discovered attached to the Longfellow Bridge, which spans the Charles River from Boston to Cambridge.

Boston police are separately investigating suspicious items at Columbus and Stuart streets and near the New England Medical Center, Boston police said.

Storrow drive has been is closed, and traffic on the Longfellow Bridge has been cut down to one lane, according to Boston police. Charles Street in downtown Boston is also closed while several agencies investigate suspicious packages discovered there this afternoon.

Storrow drive was closed at 2 p.m., according to State Police. Thirty minutes later police opened one eastbound lane to traffic.

According to Boston police, Charles Street is also closed while several agencies investigate suspicious packages discovered there this afternoon.

YNet: Israeli tourist offended by racist sign on Indian train

A security sign on a train from Goa to Mumbai in India featured a written warning to passengers not to take eatables from strangers because they could be drugged and a drawing illustrating two religious Jews reading the Torah.

"Never accept any eatables from a stranger or co-passenger whom you have never met before. They could be drugged," read security tip number 6, to the left of which appeared a diagram of two religious Jews.

The sign was spotted and photographed by an Israeli tourist two months ago during a journey from Goa to Mumbai.

"This sign is without any doubt racist," said Iris Alon, "it clearly says that Jews can poison you by giving you food that contains poison."

"It is very irritating to see a sign like this in India. In general there are good relations between Indians and Israeli tourists, and I never thought that such racism existed in the country, and certainly not in a railway operator," she said.

"What's worse is that many tourists are exposed to this sign, which makes it more intense," said Alon, adding that railway operator is one of the biggest in India.

Alon wrote the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the Israeli Embassy in India asking that they file a complaint with Indian authorities and demand that the sign be removed.

Immigration Imams: Pakistani Press Present, Boston Press AWOL

Miss Kelly is keeping tabs on the latest news with regard to Massachusetts' Immigration Imams:

Two Months and Counting - When Will the Boston Globe and Herald Pay Attention to Masood Story?

Pakistani Editorial: "Kudos to the Christian and Jewish Church!"

The Pakistani press has started discussing the story, including the mens' connection to a renowned Pakistani terrorist...how about the Globe and the Herald?

The Mayor of Boston has no idea who he's giving City land to?

According to Michael Graham, Tom Menino is doing a Sargeant Schultz when it comes to the Islamic Society of Boston and their multi-million dollar, Saudi-funded, mosque: Menino Asks: "Mosque? WHAT Mosque?"

Kudos to 96.9 FM TALK's Eagan and Braude for asking Mayor Menino about his support for a taxpayer-subsidized mosque during an interview yesterday afternoon. While neither Jim nor Margery have been following this story as closely as we have, Mayor Menino knows even less about his position on the ISB mosque than they do!

When asked about why he supported giving $2 million in taxpayer-owned land to the terror-friendly folks running the Islamic Society of Boston for a mere $175k, Menino denied that he was even mayor when the deal went down. "That happened before me," Boston's four-term mayor told E&B. He claimed to know virtually nothing about the subject at all...

...Lessee....According to his official biography, Mayor Tom "Pimp My Ride" Menin-yo was elected to his first term on November 2, 1993. He spent nine years on the city council before that. The ISB groundbreaking was 2002, the transfer of city land, 2003. Then there's the ongoing lawsuit trying to uncover the facts of the ISB funding that his administration is fighting. In fact, city officials were in court trying to keep the lid on this story LAST week!

Anybody else see a problem here?...

Um...yes! Menino's Boston Redevelopment Authority has been stonewalling requests for documents and Menino isn't aware of it? This issue has been in a controversial state for years now, and Menino isn't aware of the basic facts? Is he lying or stupid...or greased?

The Great Dictator

I hope you don't mind spoilers for old movies. If you do, skip this one.

Some time ago I mused on Charlie Chaplin's first talking movie, The Great Dictator and I thought now I'd take advantage of some of the "new technology" to post a clip.

Filmed in 1939 and released in 1940, this film is remarkable for its direct lampooning of Hitler at a time when the USA wasn't yet at war and for its depiction of the plight of the Jews (however naive -- and yes, Hitler saw the film) by name.

Chaplin plays both the Hitler figure (Adenoid Hynkel, Dictator of "Tomainia") and the quiet and innocent Jewish barber who looks remarkably like the dictator. In this scene, which is the climax of the film, The Barber and his Tomainian dissident friend have made good their escape from jail but, with the barber in uniform and taken for the dictator, the two find themselves trapped and forced to play along in their roles at a mass rally held after the victorious Tomainian invasion of neighboring "Osterlich."

Though Chaplin's politics appear to have been a bit dodgy and his life full of controversies for that...and some other matters, I think the film and the scene can be taken on their own merits.

The clip begins with one of the film's "heavies," Hynkel's right-hand-man, Herr Garbitsch, introducing him. I think it's necessary to include so as to give something for "the barber's" speech to counter-point to...

In fact, there's another scene I'm sorely tempted to post, but I don't want to ruin the film. It's not one of the famous scenes (I don't think), it's quick, but in a somewhat naive film like this, it strikes with surprising power...it sneaks up on you. My 85 year old father, with whom I watched this picture recently, became very emotional when he saw it. If you've seen the film, see if you know what part I'm talking about.

That Palestinian 'State'

You know, the one that already exists? How's that working out for ya?

Caroline Glick: Welcome to Palestine

In the world of international diplomacy few issues receive more wall-to-wall support than the notion that it is essential to establish a Palestinian state. Leaders worldwide are so busy speaking of how essential it is for a State of Palestine to be founded that none of them seems to have noticed that it already exists...

...And so it is that as statesmen and activists worldwide loudly proclaim their commitment to establishing the sovereign State of Palestine, they miss the fact that Palestine exists. And it is a nightmare.

In the State of Palestine 88 percent of the public feels insecure. Perhaps the other 12 percent are members of the multitude of regular and irregular militias. For in the State of Palestine the ratio of police/militiamen/men-under-arms to civilians is higher than in any other country on earth.

In the State of Palestine, two-year-olds are killed and no one cares. Children are woken up in the middle of the night and murdered in front of their parents. Worshipers in mosques are gunned down by terrorists who attend competing mosques. And no one cares. No international human rights groups publish reports calling for an end to the slaughter. No UN body condemns anyone or sends a fact-finding mission to investigate the murders...

...FOR THE past 13 years, since the Palestinian Authority was established in 1994, the contours of the State of Palestine have taken form in front of our eyes. Starting with Yasser Arafat's abrogation of the rule of law and murderous campaign against land dealers and journalists, with each passing year and with each move to further empower the PA, the situation has only grown worse. And yet, international pressure on Israel from Arabs, Europeans and the US to surrender more territory, curtail its authority, abrogate its claims to the areas set for Palestine, and finance the Fatah terror group have only grown in intensity.

And with each passing year, as the reality of Palestine has become clearer, the Israeli leadership's will to resist this pressure is increasingly eroded...

...Palestine is a terror state and an economic basket case fully funded by the international community. Indeed, over the past year since Hamas won the Palestinian elections, international assistance to the Palestinians has increased dramatically.

As Ibrahim Gambari, the UN under-secretary-general for political affairs, noted last Thursday, official Western aid to the Palestinians, not including Arab and Iranian support for Hamas and Fatah, increased by 10 percent in 2006 over 2005, and stood at $1.2 billion.

The Palestinians, who receive more aid per capita than any people on earth, are needy not because they lack funds. They are poor because they prefer poverty, violence and war to prosperity, peace and moderation. So it is that 57 percent of Palestinians support terror attacks against Israel.

The multitude of protesters worldwide who demand an end to the so-called "occupation" and the establishment of Palestine should be made aware of the fact that Palestine already exists. The hordes of political leaders mindlessly squawking about "visions" and "two-state solutions" should know: This is Palestine. Enter at your own risk.

That's a significant snip, but it's worth reading in full. [h/t: mal]

A Joke of a Border Fence

Iran: Holocaust Denial in the MSM

Interesting to see what gets some Iranians angry about the UN.

Editor of Iranian Kayhan Daily Reacts to U.N. Resolution Against Holocaust Denial:'The Resolution Prepares the U.N.'s Corpse for Burial in the Graveyard of History'

In reaction to the January 26, 2007 U.N. resolution condemning Holocaust denial, the editor of the Iranian daily Kayhan, Hossein Shariatmadari, who is close to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, attacked the U.N. and accused it of acting against its own charter, and against human rights.

The following are excerpts from the article: [1]

"If the U.N. General Assembly's resolution of Friday was not the last nail in the coffin of this organization, then it [at least] drove one in, and it is preparing the U.N.'s corpse for burial in the graveyard of history… The draft of this resolution, which is clearly opposed to the most basic recognized principles of human rights, was brought before the U.N. General Assembly by the U.S. on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, and that same day it received the agreement of the majority of the countries, including Russia and China.

"The Holocaust, or the slaughter of Jews during of WWII by German Nazis, is a myth and a contrived story. Up until now, many well-known European and American historians have denied that it occurred, by presenting irrefutable historical documents and records...

"Irrefutable"..."Human Rights"...I do not think it means what you think it means.

Much luck to Mitt Romney:

...He also set up a meeting that was taking place later Tuesday in Boston between Netanyahu and Treasurer Timothy Cahill to talk about the divestment plan. Cahill controls pension fund investments in Massachusetts.

In addressing Iran, Romney focused on a potential challenge for the next president: the threat of a nuclear power next to Iraq.

Romney said economic sanctions should be tightened.

"Our model should be at least as severe to the sanctions imposed on Apartheid South Africa. We should demand no less from the international community today," he said...

Navy Aviator Missing In Action From the Vietnam War Identified

From DoD: Mongilardi%2C%20Peter.jpg

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

He is Navy Cmdr. Peter Mongilardi Jr., of Haledon, N.J. He will be buried on April 11 at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington D.C.

On June 25, 1965, Mongilardi departed the USS Coral Sea in his A-4C Skyhawk on an armed reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam. His flight encountered bad weather and enemy fire over Thanh Hoa Province, causing the wingman to lose visual and radio contact with Mongilardi. Contact was never re-established and the aircraft failed to return to the carrier.

In 1993, a joint U.S.-Socialist Republic of Vietnam (S.R.V.) archival team, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), obtained information concerning the crash while researching documents, artifacts and photographs at the Central Army Museum in Hanoi. Later that year, another joint U.S./S.R.V. team conducted an investigation in Thanh Hoa Province. The team interviewed two local Vietnamese citizens who recalled the crash and said the pilot died in the impact. The men then led the team to the crash site.

In 1994, another joint team excavated the crash site and recovered human remains and pilot-related items, including a belt tip, boot heel, pieces of flight boot and other items worn by the pilot...

Europe's Huge Problem

The more things change...

Marked rise in attacks on Jews in Europe over the past year

Last year saw a substantial rise in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in Germany, Austria and the Scandinavian countries, according to the Global Forum Against Anti-Semitism.

In an annual press conference, the forum explained that 2006 was characterized by escalation in the number and violent nature of attacks on Jews, proliferation of Holocaust denial and increased comparison of Israel to the Nazi regime.

The Global Forum - a joint effort of the Jewish Agency, the Foreign Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office - counted 360 anti-Semitic incidents in France in 2006, compared to 300 in 2005. In the United Kingdom, the report listed a yearly decrease from 321 incidents in 2005 to 312 incidents in 2006. Russia recorded 300 incidents in 2006 compared to 250 the preceding year, and Austria saw a jump from 50 incidents to 83 last year. The Scandinavian countries saw 53 incidents in 2006, substantially more than the previous year's 35. The report cited a 60-percent rise in incidents in the Berlin area, although it did not include figures for all of Germany...

Britain's Huge Problem

Shocking survey results show young British Muslims are actually more radical than their immigrant parents [via LGF]: Multiculturalism 'drives young Muslims to shun British values'

The doctrine of multi-culturalism has alienated an entire generation of young Muslims and made them increasingly radical, a report has found.

In stark contrast with their parents, growing numbers sympathise with extreme teachings of Islam, with almost four in ten wanting to live under Sharia law in Britain.

The study identifies significant support for wearing the veil in public, Islamic schools and even punishment by death for Muslims who convert to another religion.

Most alarmingly, 13 per cent of young Muslims said they "admired" organisations such as Al Qaeda which are prepared to "fight the West".

The poll exposes a fracture between the attitudes of Muslims aged 16 to 24, most of whom were born in Britain, and those of their parents’ generation, who are more likely to have been immigrants...

...The poll of 1,000 Muslims, weighted to represent the population across the UK, found that a growing minority of youngsters felt they had less in common with non-Muslims than their parents did.

While only 17 per cent of over-55s said they would prefer to live under Sharia law, that increased to 37 per cent of those aged 16 to 24...

Bringing the Dark Ages to Britain

Muslim urged to shun 'unholy' vaccines

A MUSLIM doctors’ leader has provoked an outcry by urging British Muslims not to vaccinate their children against diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella because it is “un-Islamic”.

Dr Abdul Majid Katme, head of the Islamic Medical Association, is telling Muslims that almost all vaccines contain products derived from animal and human tissue, which make them “haram”, or unlawful for Muslims to take.

Islam permits only the consumption of halal products, where the animal has had its throat cut and bled to death while God’s name is invoked.

Islam also forbids the eating of any pig meat, which Katme says is another reason why vaccines should be avoided, as some contain or have been made using pork-based gelatine.

His warning has been criticised by the Department of Health and the British Medical Association, who said Katme risked increasing infections ranging from flu and measles to polio and diphtheria in Muslim communities.

Terror in Eilat

I remember being in Eilat over 20 years ago...snorkeling in the Red Sea (unforgettable)...one topless European sunbather was making a bit of a stir...no Israel's dark ages neighbors have created the one thing they're good at -- a blood bath.

Pajamas Media has a round up of news on the latest terror attack. The bomber is said to have come in through from Egypt, after getting there through a tunnel from the Gaza Strip.

Tom Gross reports that "A Hamas spokesman called this morning’s attack on ordinary Israelis 'natural'." More on the Hamas reaction, here: Hamas defends suicide bombing as legitimate "resistance" against Israel

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip: A spokesman for the Islamic militant group Hamas defended Monday's Palestinian suicide bombing in Israel as legitimate "resistance" against Israel.

Fawzi Barhoum called the attack a "natural response" to Israeli military policies in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as its ongoing boycott of the Hamas-led Palestinian government. "So long as there is occupation, resistance is legitimate," he said.

He also said attacks on Israel were preferable to the recent bout of Palestinian infighting in Gaza. "The right thing is for Fatah weapons to be directed toward the occupation not toward Hamas," he said...

The occupation...of Eilat.

The Problem of 'Progressive' Jews

JTA reports on a meeting of the "Progressive" Jewish community out in San Francisco to address the disturbing phenomenon of the rising tide of anti-Semitism among its fellow travelers: ‘Progressive’ anti-Semitism? S.F. meet considers phenomenon:

Three years ago, Jonathan Bernstein received an e-mail from a distraught political activist in the San Francisco Bay Area concerned about rising anti-Semitism among fellow political progressives.

“The growing acceptance of anti-Semitic rhetoric is so commonplace it is not even recognized as anti-Semitism,” wrote the activist, who went on to list a number of anti-Semitic incidents in her community that had left her rattled.

Despite her opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq, the woman had not attended a recent anti-war rally due to her reluctance to support the group organizing the protest.

“We’ve gotten calls for help like that almost weekly here for the last three years,” said Bernstein, director of the Anti-Defamation League office in San Francisco. “With each case we’ve helped put out fires by trying to get the right person to speak out about whatever the issue is.”

On Jan. 28 the ADL will try to do more than just douse fires when it convenes Finding Our Voice, a daylong conference in San Francisco aimed at empowering Jewish progressives to respond to anti-Semitism on the left.

Co-sponsored by more than 50 Jewish organizations from across the political spectrum — including the ADL, the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, Americans for Peace Now and the Jewish Labor Committee — the conference aims to empower participants to respond to what organizers describe as an alarming trend...

That being San Francisco, the place where the Soviet Union never died, it just moved West, I'd imagine it will be quite a significant gathering of folks. There are some who are not invited, however. Perhaps they're assumed to be beyond hope, and that's probably a good assumption:

... Some Jews on the left view groups like the ADL and AIPAC with skepticism, believing they deliberately blur the line between anti-Semitism and legitimate criticism of Israeli policy. Others are staying away from the conference out of fear that association with it could cost them credibility in the progressive community.

“We’ve all had to break out of our comfort zones to put this together, including myself,” Bernstein said.

But for some, the ADL hasn’t broken out enough.

Two prominent Bay Area Jewish organizations active in the progressive movement — Tikkun and Jewish Voice for Peace — were not invited to co-sponsor the conference. Two others were invited to participate but declined, citing concerns about the agenda.

Rabbi Michael Lerner, the founder of Tikkun and perhaps the most well-known Jewish progressive in the country, will be in Washington on the day of the conference protesting the Iraq war.

A spokesperson for Jewish Voice for Peace, a liberal advocacy group working on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, said: “From our perspective, you cannot get to the roots of anti-Semitism in the progressive movement without honestly addressing the severe human-rights violations that Israel engages in every day. Judging by the lineup, that kind of honest examination is not likely to happen at this conference.”

A source involved in planning the conference told JTA that it was precisely that type of discussion that organizers wanted to avoid out of concern that it would distract from the primary focus on Jewish oppression...

Ah, Jewish Voice for Peace, anywhere there's an anti-Israel protest, you'll find them, seemingly without a care in the world for who they're standing next to. When Israelis Left and Right were united this summer in their fight against Hizballah, who was out in the streets of Boston, standing next to Israel's most vicious enemies, willing to join those enemies in accusing the Jewish State of the worst of crimes? Members of JVfP.

Remembering Chris Hedges

I was just reading this review of former New York Times journalist Chris Hedges' new book, American Fascists – The Christian Right and The War on America: The Times, "Fascists," and the Religious Right, by Don Feder, and I was reminded of the time in 2003 when Hedges was booed off the stage while trying to deliver the commencement address at Rockford College in Illinois. The original video links are dead, but I've found them posted at YouTube and have added them into the extended entry below. Look out for train wreck. Totten: "They Had Machine Guns Welded in Windows"

Michael Totten continues his Lebanon series with a very interesting interview with an Israeli soldier who participated in the ground war: “They Had Machine Guns Welded in Windows”. A snip:

...Eli: I didn’t see any Katyusha rockets being installed inside houses. But I’ve seen stuff…like we went toward this house, we were fired upon from inside the house. We went into the house. We cleared the house. Anyone who was in the house was neutralized. We went down to the basement. And also in the basement everything was neutralized. And we saw a periscope in the basement that was looking up toward the main road.

MJT: A periscope like something they use in a submarine?

Eli: Yeah, a periscope. You know, you can be underground and see above. It was a pipe that had mirrors that were reflecting up. And a small kind of detonator. Our team checked it out. There were 500 kilos of explosives under the road waiting for Israeli tanks. There were really ready. They built these houses for that purpose because they knew this was going to happen some day. They were just waiting for the tanks to roll in...

Interfaith Ho-Down for Imam Masood -- Locals React to Saeed Connection

Miss Kelly has another one here on a subject of interest: Imam Masood and His Interfaith Supporters/ Saeed Connection

Islamic Society of Boston in Globe Op-Ed

Miss Kelly has some comments after the new spokesperson for the Islamic Society of Boston plays the "we're so persecuted" card in the Boston Globe: Boston Globe Op-Ed from ISB's Spokesman Masse.

Well, Jessica Masse is new, so maybe she's not aware of things like the Qaradhawi, Fitaihi, hate literature in the mosque business. And maybe she's a bit provincial, and not aware that financial ties to Saudi Arabia (any ties), ought to raise a reasonable person's eyebrows.

Bringing the trash in at Brandeis

And now it's Finkelstein's turn: Norman Finkelstein Invited to Campus

DePaul University Professor Norman Finkelstein, controversial author of Beyond Chutzpah: On the Use of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History, has been invited to speak on campus by members of the student body, according to an e-mail sent to the Radical Student Alliance (RSA).

“Despite impressive efforts on our part to bring Professor Norman Finkelstein of DePaul University… to lecture yesterday evening [Jan. 23] following speeches by former President [Jimmy] Carter and Professor [Alan] Dershowitz,” wrote Kevin Conway ’09 in a Jan. 24 e-mail to the group, “we were ultimately denied because of the last minute nature of our proposal.”

Conway added in his e-mail that despite these setbacks, Finkelstein, a “world-renowned expert on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” had agreed to speak on a date “tentatively scheduled for” Feb. 3 at 7pm. The event, according to the e-mail, would be co-sponsored by the RSA, the Arab Culture Club (ACC), and a possible third sponsor.

“Finkelstein is probably regarded as one of the most internationally acknowledged experts in regards to life on the ground in the occupied territories,” said Conway...

By whom?

...Professor Jerry Cohen (AMST), meanwhile, said that “it’s time to get past bringing in these professional mud-wrestlers and ‘designated hitters,’ and having the debate amongst members of the community who are well-known for their differing positions.” He added that “we don’t have to turn this into a media circus and turn this university into a television program… we shouldn’t just bring in people who trash Israel, or trash Dershowitz, or bring out ‘counter-trash.’”

And at Stanford [via the comments]: Op-Ed: Holocaust denial comes to Stanford, Holocaust Denial Does NOT Come to Stanford, Israel misuses Holocaust, Finkelstein insists.

Far from being "silenced," Finkelstein is actually in demand due to his outrageous views.

Finally noticing the Iranians?

If you know that you need to foster a re-birth in Iraq, and you know that its neighbors, Syria and Iran, are part of an Axis of Evil, two countries you can expect will subvert, destroy, wreck, murder...to stop it happening, but you know this mission is a world-historical import...why, oh why, weren't you pursuing policies like this from Day 1?

WaPo: Troops Authorized to Kill Iranian Operatives in Iraq

The Bush administration has authorized the U.S. military to kill or capture Iranian operatives inside Iraq as part of an aggressive new strategy to weaken Tehran's influence across the Middle East and compel it to give up its nuclear program, according to government and counterterrorism officials with direct knowledge of the effort.

For more than a year, U.S. forces in Iraq have secretly detained dozens of suspected Iranian agents, holding them for three to four days at a time. The "catch and release" policy was designed to avoid escalating tensions with Iran and yet intimidate its emissaries. U.S. forces collected DNA samples from some of the Iranians without their knowledge, subjected others to retina scans, and fingerprinted and photographed all of them before letting them go.

Last summer, however, senior administration officials decided that a more confrontational approach was necessary, as Iran's regional influence grew and U.S. efforts to isolate Tehran appeared to be failing. The country's nuclear work was advancing, U.S. allies were resisting robust sanctions against the Tehran government, and Iran was aggravating sectarian violence in Iraq.

"There were no costs for the Iranians," said one senior administration official. "They are hurting our mission in Iraq, and we were bending over backwards not to fight back."

Three officials said that about 150 Iranian intelligence officers, plus members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Command, are believed to be active inside Iraq at any given time. There is no evidence the Iranians have directly attacked U.S. troops in Iraq, intelligence officials said.

But, for three years, the Iranians have operated an embedding program there, offering operational training, intelligence and weaponry to several Shiite militias connected to the Iraqi government, to the insurgency and to the violence against Sunni factions. Gen. Michael V. Hayden, the director of the CIA, told the Senate recently that the amount of Iranian-supplied materiel used against U.S. troops in Iraq "has been quite striking."

"Iran seems to be conducting a foreign policy with a sense of dangerous triumphalism," Hayden said...

Why shouldn't they? We've let them get away with it.

Meanwhile, Iran's nuclear ambitions are speeding ahead, and they're confident enough to issue threats in response to sanctions:

Who's to decide what's 'pro-Israel?'

No one, apparently.

When is enough enough? Lynn B. has a look at a particular "Progressive Zionist" organization's idea of "supporting" Israel on campus and laments the fact that a lot of otherwise sensible groups are either unable or unwilling to do anything about it. Maddening: Support Hillel much? Lynn quotes the ZOA:

...The ICC is a pro-Israel umbrella group whose mission is to "foster support for Israel on campus," promote "Israel advocacy," and "counter the worrisome rise of anti-Israel activities on college campuses." In December 2006, the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), a member of the ICC, expressed concern that the Union of Progressive Zionists (UPZ), another ICC member, has been sponsoring a program on campuses that harshly and falsely criticizes Israel for human rights abuses against the Palestinian Arabs. The UPZ-sponsored program - called "Breaking the Silence" - omits historical facts, provides no balance or context, and promotes outright falsehoods about Israel. Kenneth Stein: My Problem with Jimmy Carter's Book

Ken Stein reviews Jimmy Carter's book at length. The content of the piece is pretty similar in outline to the contents of the talk I saw Stein deliver the other night.

This is interesting:

...During the difficult negotiations between Egypt and Israel, Carter and his advisers tried to get Sadat to engage in a collusive scheme: They would encourage Sadat to make "deliberately exaggerated" demands. The White House would then intervene to "compel" Cairo to scale back its demands in exchange for Israeli concessions. Then-national security advisor Brzezinski explained that Washington would "apply maximum leverage on Israel to accommodate,"[14] by keeping the West Bank's political future on the table for future negotiations. That Carter risked possible Israeli-Egyptian peace in an effort to extract greater concessions from Begin underscores the tension in their relationship...

Carter has already retracted and apologized for the part implying the Palestinian terror should continue until they receive Israeli concessions, promising a re-write in future editions.

MAS Watch: 9/11 Conspiracy Book

A recent email on the moderated Muslim American Society email list touts the 9/11 conspiracy book of theology Professor David Ray Griffin, published by the official publisher of the Presbyterian Church (USA): Christian Faith and the Truth Behind 9/11: A Call to Reflection and Action. The email points to this page at a Muslim-oriented web site:

This book reveals the motives behind 9/11 and its true perpetrators. It is written by David Ray Griffin, a highly respected author known for his thorough research. While Mr. Griffin addresses the Christian community, his book is for all those who stand on the side of the truth, regardless of their individual beliefs. When he calls Christians to speak out against the tyranny and oppression of these perpetrators, he is calling on each and every one of us.

Bethlehem Christians fear neighbors

The Samir Qumsiyeh referred to in this story is the cousin of the infamous Mazin Qumsiyeh now touring the US guiding the Wheels of Justice on its traveling show blaming all that is evil on Israel. Mazin needs to look closer to home. The entire text of this important, must-read piece by Khaled Abu Toameh is pasted below. This is the real narrative of the Middle East -- what is becoming of its minority populations? Note one money quote (among many): "A Christian businessman who asked not to be identified said the conditions of Christians in Bethlehem and its surroundings had deteriorated ever since the area was handed over to the PA in 1995."

JPost: Bethlehem Christians fear neighbors

A number of Christian families have finally decided to break their silence and talk openly about what they describe as Muslim persecution of the Christian minority in this city.

The move comes as a result of increased attacks on Christians by Muslims over the past few months. The families said they wrote letters to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, the Vatican, Church leaders and European governments complaining about the attacks, but their appeals have fallen on deaf ears.

According to the families, many Christians have long been afraid to complain in public about the campaign of "intimidation" for fear of retaliation by their Muslim neighbors and being branded "collaborators" with Israel.

But following an increase in attacks on Christian-owned property in the city over the past few months, some Christians are no longer afraid to talk about the ultra-sensitive issue. And they are talking openly about leaving the city.

"The situation is very dangerous," said Samir Qumsiyeh, owner of the Beit Sahur-based private Al-Mahd (Nativity) TV station. "I believe that 15 years from now there will be no Christians left in Bethlehem. Then you will need a torch to find a Christian here. This is a very sad situation."

Qumsiyeh, one of the few Christians willing to speak about the harsh conditions of their community, has been the subject of numerous death threats. His house was recently attacked with fire-bombs, but no one was hurt...

Dershowitz has a Question for Carter

What's odd about this is that lawyers never ask questions they don't already know the answer to. This video is just one short snip of Dershowitz's talk at Brandeis...h/t to The David Project:

I haven't seen any complete video of both talks yet. The Boston Globe has three pieces that mention the event, here, here and here. All are fairly fawning and are more about the process than any substance on the part of Carter (or Dershowitz). Looks like video of Carter's talk itself is at that first Globe link, but I'm holding out for the whole thing.

Ray gun makes targets feel as if they are on fire

Aw yeeeeah...

CNN: Ray gun makes targets feel as if they are on fire raygun.jpg

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Georgia (AP) -- The military's new weapon is a ray gun that shoots a beam that makes people feel as if they will catch fire.

The technology is supposed to be harmless -- a non-lethal way to get enemies to drop their weapons.

Military officials say it could save the lives of civilians and service members in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.

The weapon is not expected to go into production until at least 2010, but all branches of the military have expressed interest in it, officials said.

During the first media demonstration of the weapon Wednesday, airmen fired beams from a large dish antenna mounted atop a Humvee at people pretending to be rioters and acting out other scenarios U.S. troops might encounter.

The crew fired beams from more than 500 yards (455 meters) away, nearly 17 times the range of existing non-lethal weapons, such as rubber bullets.

While the sudden, 130-degree Fahrenheit (54.44 Celsius) heat was not painful, it was intense enough to make participants think their clothes were about to ignite...

Immigration Imams: More on the Pakistan Connection

Miss Kelly has a couple of posts detailing the disturbing background of the Pakistani relative (Hafiz Saeed) of our two Massaachusetts "Immigration Imams" (Hafiz Abdul Hannan and Hafiz Muhammad Masood): More on Imam Masood and Hafiz Saeed

...Hafiz Saeed was quoted yesterday in an Indian newspaper saying "dialogue cannot replace guns."
Hafiz_saeed "NEW DELHI: Even as the Hurriyat team visiting Pakistan met president Pervez Musharraf and made appropriate 'peace noises', the main driver of terror in Jammu & Kashmir, Lashkar-e-Taiba (pictured at left), made it clear that it was not prepared to buy the argument that dialogue could replace guns."...

PC(USA) Since the Synod

I have been remiss in not linking to several posts at the Truth in Love blog that take a follow-up look at the activities of the Presbyterian Church (USA) since the church synod overturned divestment last summer.

Will Spotts has an extensive look at how some church organs have performed...whether they've gotten the message for a change in course: Breach of Faith: The PC(USA) and Israel Since the 217th General Assembly

...The heart of the matter is this: there are only two possibilities. Either the 217th General Assembly represented a modest but very significant change in Presbyterian policy on Israel and the Palestinian Territories – as the plain reading of the actions suggest, or the 217th General Assembly represented an attempt to continue the same policies while describing them in a different fashion in order to deceive the unwary. I am astonished at the number of Presbyterian officials who are choosing the second interpretation...

There's also this: The Presbyterian Mendacity Service Strikes Again

...This week, yet another article from the Presbyterian News Service appeared that championed the view that nothing was changed in 2006. The Presbyterian News Service, a service which claims lofty purpose “to seek and to tell the truth”, has advanced this idea a couple of times before. It talked about “reframing of the Israel-Palestine action”, and curiously asserted that “selective, phased divestment was not mentioned in 2006.” The assertion is curious because it is patently untrue. The 2006 assembly explicitly removed the phased, selective divestment instruction; in order to do this so explicitly, the assembly HAD to mention it.

However, this latest item goes a step farther in its sheer mendacity...

Finally, there's this most recent post: The Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Middle East

Jacoby: Democrats' silence on jihad is deadly

Like I said a long time ago, there are two kinds of people: Those who think the war on terror is "Bush's War," and it will go away with him, and those who understand that our enemies exist independently of the current occupant of the oval office (they have an ontological existence independent of the wishes of leftist columnists) and that they need to be confronted.
Jeff Jacoby: Democrats' silence on jihad is deadly

...Eight Democrats, eight would-be commanders-in-chief -- all running for president in a time of war. So which of them, on getting into the race, had this to say about the nature of the enemy confronting us?

"We are engaged in a war against an axis of Islamists, extremists, and terrorists. It is an axis of evil. It has headquarters in Tehran and Waziristan. But because of the unconventional nature of this war, it also has headquarters in cities throughout Europe and Asia and Africa and the United States of America, in cells that operate in the shadows but are prepared to strike us again as they did on September 11th, 2001.

"The enemy we are fighting is . . . totalitarian. It is inhumane. It has a violent ideology and a goal of expansionism and totalitarianism. It threatens our security, our values, our way of life as seriously, in my opinion, as fascism and communism did in the last century."

Can't match that assessment of the global jihad with the Democratic candidate who uttered it? Don't feel bad; it was a trick question. Those words were actually spoken by Senator Joseph Lieberman at a forum on Iraq this month. Lieberman shared the podium with GOP colleague John McCain, who was no less blunt in his evaluation of the war and its stakes...

...The Democratic candidates, by contrast, are virtually silent on the subject...

CAMERA: Al Dura Reprise

CAMERA looks even further into the death of Abir Aramin, and the muddled press response that is again playing into the hands of those who would use the case as another blood libel: Al Dura Reprise.

It appears that the Israelis may have learned their lesson on how to handle these things...we'll see soon when the autopsy results are formally released.

Watch PBS- But Don’t Let Your Brains Fall Out

Another excellent essay at Breath of the Beast:

...There was, for example, some “unpleasantness” when Jewish immigration began to swell the population of the Jewish communities that had lived continuously in Palestine since it was ruled by the Jewish people during biblical times. Arabs, by the film’s account, still unsullied by the taint of European anti-Semitism, seem to have figured out how to massacre the Jews of Hebron, they also invented quaint pastimes such as burning synagogues and they diverted themselves by destroying Jewish property of all kinds. They did a great many other exceedingly unpleasant things in “The Holy Land” during the teens, twenties and thirties of the last century, including forming a formal and enthusiastic alliance with Hitler and the Nazis. Oh, but that, according to Anti-Semitism in the 21st Century: The Resurgence, was nothing more than a by-product of their “understandable” resentment of the influx of Jewish settlers who were changing life in the area.

When was the last time a PBS program advanced the idea that anti-immigration groups in the American southwest aren’t racist but are simply expressing an “understandable” regret in regard to the change in the local ethnic balance and life style that are caused by illegal Hispanic immigration. Did any commentator on PBS ever speculate that the white people of South Boston, Little Rock, Alabama or Mississippi were not really racist when they resisted school integration? Was there ever a film on PBS that theorized that school segregation, redlining and blockbusting were artifacts of simple, innocent resistance to change?...

Herzliya Conference Stuff

This would be the real, big Herzliya Conference, not the one I spoke at (though it's sponsored by the same entity). Here are some related links:

Mitt Romney called for anti-apartheid-like sanctions against Iran:

Republican Mitt Romney called for economic sanctions against Iran "at least as severe" as those imposed on South Africa during its apartheid era, in an effort to isolate the Central Asian nation and convince it to give up its pursuit of a nuclear weapon...

..."The military option remains on the table," said a text of the remarks Romney delivered Tuesday at the seventh annual Herzliya Conference in Herzliya, Israel.

He added: "Arab states must join this effort to prevent a nuclear Iran. These states can do much more than wring their hands and urge America to act. They should support Iraq's nascent government. They can help America focus on Iran by quickly turning down the temperature of the Arab-Israeli conflict -- stopping the financial and weapons flows to Hamas and Hezbollah, thawing relations with Israel and telling the Palestinians they must drop terrorism and recognize Israel's right to exist."...

Martin Kramer spoke from the enemy's point of view, here: Knowing Thy Enemy: Decision-Making Processes of Regional Adversaries

There's an article in the Jerusalem Post on Malcolm Hoenlein's important-sounding address (it figures into the Divestment debate, as well as into the purpose of groups like Wheels of Justice), Delegitimization of Israel rising among US elite

In the coming years American Jewry will face the most significant delegitimization of Israel it has ever encountered, Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice-chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, told The Jerusalem Post on Monday.

This will occur, he believes, as the blueprint developed at the Durban Conference on Racism in 2001 is implemented by anti-Israel activists in America...

...The process Hoenlein sees happening in America is similar to what occurred in Britain, he said, "where the elite in society were turned against Israel...

..."What was once acceptable on the fringes is now acceptable in the mainstream," he said, concluding that "at times, the American Jewish community has to [exercise] greater assertiveness."

Eagle-Tribune: Wheels of Justice speakers' travel paid by School Department

The Eagle Tribune confirms:

ANDOVER - The high school has paid $349 in travel costs to two speakers from Wheels of Justice.

The cost was "definitely in line" with what the school pays for other speakers, Principal Peter Anderson said. The money did not come from taxpayers; Anderson said he took the money from one of "a number of accounts that have been sitting around for years, with small amounts of money in them."

The school reimbursed speaker Mazin Qumsiyeh $138 in mileage for driving between his Connecticut home and Andover and paid speaker Joe Carr $211 for a plane ticket, Anderson said. Anderson did not know where Carr flew from.

Andover High School typically pays speakers an honorarium and, if they decline, offers to pay their travel expenses instead, Anderson said.

The Jan. 5 presentations by Wheels of Justice, an activist group that opponents say is extremist and anti-Israel, came at the end of a two-month controversy at the school. Anderson canceled the speakers' first planned visit in October but reversed his decision after teachers union President Tom Meyers threatened a First Amendment lawsuit.

The school hosted separate presentations for students during the day and for the general public that night. Anderson cut the public forum short after many adults in the crowd taunted and yelled at the speakers.

The School Department also paid its lawyers for consultations during the controversy. The cost of those services was not available yesterday, Superintendent Claudia Bach said.

MEMRITV: Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah:Armed Struggle against the American Forces Is the Solution in Iraq

...The Americans have not come to establish a democracy in Iraq, or even to establish a central democratic state in Iraq. The Americans have come to divide Iraq and the entire region. The American occupation in Iraq poses a danger to the Iraqi people and to the region. Since day one, our statements were clear. We support the option of a comprehensive Iraqi resistance, with all its aspects, especially the military aspect. We believe that the solution in Iraq begins with adopting the option of armed resistance - Jihad against the occupation forces. This is my opinion. Obviously, I cannot impose my view on anybody, but if I am asked, by a brother in Palestine, for example, I will tell him that the resistance is the way to save Palestine. With regard to Iraq, I say that the resistance is the way to save Iraq.

In the first part of the interview, Nasrallah talks about a grudging admiration for Israeli democracy, even within its "racist framework." Here's how Hizballah treats Lebanese democracy.

...But maybe the army is just waiting for the opposition to run out of steam. As I begin to make my way home along the desolate Airport Road, apathetic soldiers are starting to sweep up the charred remains of Hezbollah's roadblocks. But Hezbollah isn't going quietly into the night. Minutes after a soldier extinguishes a flaming pile of tires, a fleet of mopeds appears with a fresh supply of rubber and wood for the fire; a Hezbollah leader, equipped with a walkie-talkie and an earpiece, arrives seconds later with a spreadsheet that coordinates responsibilities for the day's activities. With the roadblock ablaze once again, the Hezbollah strike force is soon on the road to their next station...

Moroccan held on terror charges

What's interesting is not so much the arrest, but that CNN repeatedly uses the "I" word in this report:

MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- Spanish police arrested a Moroccan man near Barcelona Wednesday on suspicion of Islamic terrorist activities, a Spanish Interior Ministry spokesman told CNN.

The suspect, Abdellatif Nekkavi, was under investigation for allegedly raising funds to support anti-Western Islamic militants in Iraq and for allegedly obtaining forged documents for Islamic radicals traveling to Iraq, the spokesman said.

Police arrested Nekkavi at his home in Badalona, a suburb of Barcelona, at 6:40 a.m. local time, and he was to be taken to Madrid to appear before a magistrate at the National Court, which investigates terrorism.

Spanish media quoted a sister of Nekkavi as saying he had lived in Spain for five years and was a "normal person" who worked and spent time with family and friends.

State of the Union

Text is here. Instapundit has a live blog and links, here. Jules Crittenden wrote the speech that should have been given here.

I thought the real speech was pretty good, if lower energy than past efforts. Like Glenn, I was watching when Pelosi was standing and when not. What the heck was she chewing all night? It was like she was adjusting the screws on her face lift or something.

And the two or three times the camera went to Hillary? I swear the thought that immediately entered my mind, after the shock wore off, was, "Please God, don't let Hillary become President..." It's just brutal...like staring into the face of Medusa.

Was the subway hero guy a riot or what? He was having a great time.

Anyway, like I said, pretty good speech. The Democrats are definitely psyching themselves and us up to sacrifice Iraq. Iraq is Teddy Kennedy's second Vietnam.

In the words of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...

"We do not worship Iran, we worship Allah...I say, let this land [Iran] burn. I say let this land go up in smoke, provided Islam emerges triumphant..."

Of course, not all Iranians agree. Here is an open letter signed by over 100 Iranians denouncing Ahmadinejad's Holocaust denial conference. Of course, it doesn't look like many, if any, are living in Iran.

Being a Minority in an Islamic State

Yemen's Last Jews Threatened and Banished

Jews in Yemen have been abruptly targeted by a local sheikh, told they were "moral destroyers," and ordered to "leave or else" - and some have. Jewish "sages" have been killed, one woman reports.

Only some 50 Jewish families remain in virulently anti-Israel Yemen, but after years of being largely ignored by the local population and authorities, they have now been targeted by Moslem extremists.

Some of the families, in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, were confronted by masked men who told them that if they do not leave within ten days, "things will be bad for you." Other Jews were told that the Moslems don't want to see even one Jew left in the region.

Reports of Killings

In a phone call engineered by Voice of Israel Radio on Monday, a Jewish woman living in Yemen said that the Moslems "have already killed the wise men." No confirmation of this has been received from other quarters - though news from Yemen does not flow freely...

This is one of the reasons that Israel exists as a Jewish majority state, so that Jews are no longer at the mercy of some stronger majority population.

Meryl comments on this issue, here. A snip:

There were 55,000 Jews in Yemen prior to the establishment of Israel. Today, the number is in the hundreds. Soon, it may be zero.

Imports of Israeli Products UP After Socialist Party Calls for Boycott

[Nelson voice] Ha Ha [/Nelson voice]

The Norway Post: Higher import from Israel

One year after the Socialist Left Party (SV) launched its boycott of goods from Israel, the import of Israeli goods has increased by 15 per cent.

In 2006, Norwegian firms imported Israeli goods worth NOK 650 million.

This is an increase by NOK 80 million, or 15 per cent from the year before, the strongest increase in many years.

This is shown by figures from Statistics Norway (SSB).

SV party secretary Edle Daasvand, who has led the campaign, says to the newspaper Vaart Land that it is not pleasant for the party to note that the import from Israel is increasing.

The Wicked Pimp

CNN: 'Chemical Ali' trial hears taped threats, insults

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- The prosecution on Tuesday played audiotapes said to be of Saddam Hussein's cousin, Ali Hassan al-Majeed, who was heard to call Iraq's current president, Jalal Talabani, "wicked and a pimp" and vow not to leave alive anyone who spoke the Kurdish language.

Talabani was a Kurdish guerrilla leader when the recording allegedly was made of al-Majeed, who also is known as known as "Chemical Ali" for allegedly using chemical weapons against Kurds during the 1980s.

Hussein suspected the Kurds, a non-Arab ethnic group in northern Iraq, of siding with Iran during the 1980-88 war between Baghdad and Tehran.

Al-Majeed later told the court that he used such language as "psychological and propaganda" tools against the Kurds, to frighten them into not fighting government forces.

"All the words used by me, such as 'deport them' or 'wipe them out,' were only for psychological effect," al-Majeed said, as the so-called Anfal case continued before the Iraqi High Tribunal...

Texas Court Dismisses 'Frivolous' Case Against NGO Monitor, two others

Chock one up for the good guys. By email from NGO Monitor:

Dear Friend,

On January 17, 2007, a Texas Federal Court judge dismissed as “wholly frivolous” and “baseless” Palestine Children’s Welfare Fund (PCWF) Riad ElSolh Hamad’s defamation suit against NGO Monitor, Frontpage Jerusalem, the Center for Study of Popular Culture and others. Hamad charged the organizations had defamed him and violated his constitutional and civil rights linking him and his charity in newspaper and Internet articles to Islamic fundamentalist terror.

In addition to dismissing Hamad's claims as “groundless”, United States District Court Judge, Sam Sparks, leveled Rule 11 sanctions against Hamad and ordered him to pay defendants’ attorney’s fees and costs totaling almost $60,000 as well as a $1000 fine to each defendant for Hamad’s repeated violation of court orders.

NGO Monitor Executive Director Professor Gerald Steinberg noted: “This was a clear attempt to use the courts and intimidation to prevent independent analysis and exposure of the incitement by anti-Israel NGOs. This strategy has now been rejected.”

In his ruling, the judge called Hamad‘s complaint “an intelligible morass of vitriolic accusations” that had “no basis in law.”

NGO Monitor analysis shows Gaza-based PCWF openly exploits children’s issues for radical politicized agendas that promote the conflict. These activities are entirely inconsistent with its claims to be a humanitarian organization. Among PCWF’s activities, documented in NGO Monitor’s report, is a children's drawing contest. The judges rewarded, almost without exception, entries that featured fierce and violent hatred of Israel. The winning picture features a fire, in the shape of a map of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, consuming the Star of David with the word “Israel” written inside the flag. Another entry depicted a Palestinian flag dropping flames on an Israeli flag and burning Israelis standing next to it. Such activities serve only to advance a culture of violence and hatred.

The use of the courts in the attempt to prevent debate and the exposure of the highly politicized activity taking place under the guise of promoting human rights is widespread. The judge in this case rejected the effort to silence NGO Monitor’s analyses of such activities.

Judge Sam Sparks, "won't you please come to Boston for the springtime?"

Boston Redevelopment Authority seeks to block mosque questions

The various lawsuits surrounding the Islamic Society of Boston's Mosque project are shaping up into what could be a series of test cases on how, and actually IF Americans can determine what sort of Islamic mosques -- peaceful or jihadi -- are going to be built around this country. Do we have a right to question and ask, or demand, that new religious institutions fit squarely into the American melting pot and do not threaten the long term survival of the very liberal democratic institutions that allow them here in the first place, or will we be handcuffed by a form of multiculturalism that brooks no questions and a government that takes a side?

Boston Globe: BRA seeks to block mosque questions, Urges court to halt subpoenas:

The Boston Redevelopment Authority went to court yesterday to prevent four of its key officials from having to answer questions under oath about a deal in which a city-owned parcel of land was transferred to an Islamic group for construction of a mosque.

Lawyers for the city's most powerful agency argued in Suffolk Superior Court that critics of the mosque project at Roxbury Crossing had no right to depose the BRA officials about the project or obtain more documents than those already provided to the David Project, a nonprofit Jewish advocacy group.

Leaders of the David Project have questioned the BRA's deal with the Islamic Society of Boston, under which the society is building the mosque. They have also suggested the BRA is trying to keep details of the arrangement secret by blocking the release of public information.

BRA attorneys said the David Project has not agreed to pay for searching for the requested documents, including e-mails, and for copying those documents, a cost that could range from about $50,000 to $85,000.

David Project lawyers said that they have clearly stated they would pay all reasonable search and duplication costs but that the BRA had "wildly inflated" cost estimates in a continuing effort to withhold thousands of public records.

"The BRA has made a series of institutional decisions to make its public documents difficult to access," Scott P. Lewis, a lawyer representing the David Project, said at yesterday's 30-minute hearing on the BRA's motion to block his subpoenas of BRA officials and on a countermotion asking that the officials be compelled to appear for questioning...

...Lewis said the BRA has thousands of documents stored "willy-nilly" in boxes that are not labeled, a storage method he said was intended to keep the documents from being easily accessible and to increase the costs of access.

He said the questioning of the subpoenaed BRA officials will enable the David Project to understand what documents are available, and in what form, without going through massive and expensive searches of what the BRA says are more than 2,000 boxes of unindexed documents and thousands of e-mails the BRA says cannot be searched easily.

The subpoenaed BRA officials include Robert Tumposky, deputy director for management information systems; Muhammad Ali-Salaam, deputy director for special projects; Patraap Patrose, deputy director for urban design; and Kevin Morrison, the agency's general counsel.

Ali-Salaam is a central figure in the battle over the mosque because of his long association with the project and his trip to the Middle East with members of the Islamic Society leadership in 2000, during which, according to an Islamic Society publication, he helped raise funds for the project.

He also has been subpoenaed to give a deposition on Feb. 7 in a suit brought against the mosque deal by Boston resident James C. Policastro, who asserts that the arrangement between the BRA and the society violates the constitutional separation of church and state...

The whole story.

Dissing the Zionist Entity at the American Psychological Association

This was sent to me as an open letter. It's a bit old ('05), but to date, it's my understanding (from the information emailed to me) that the senders have not gotten any satisfactory response from the APA, despite assurances. If anyone knows more of this situation, feel free to email or comment:

September 8, 2005

Norman B. Anderson, PhD
Chief Executive Officer,
American Psychological Association
750 First Street, NE
Washington DC 20002-4242

Dear Dr. Anderson,

On Sunday, August 21, at the American Psychological Association Annual Convention, we attended the Invited Panel Discussion: Different Type of Dialogue-The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict sponsored by Division 48 [Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict and Violence: Peace Psychology Division].

The “Different Type of Dialogue” offered was, essentially, a “monologue” in which only the Palestinian viewpoint was presented. The miniscule amount of psychological knowledge, theory or scientific learning to be applied to this important topic was largely confined to Dr. Krippner’s comments concluding the presentation. Given that the “The purpose of the division is to increase and apply psychological knowledge in the pursuit of peace,”[1] we expected to be informed, perhaps even enlightened, regarding psychological contributions to the aforementioned phenomena. Instead, we were served up a warmed-over ideological [anti-Israeli] diatribe apparently sponsored and condoned by an Association of which we have each been dues paying members for over 30 years. We are writing to make APA aware of what occurred at this meeting in hope that you will take action to assure it does not recur.

To begin with, the titles of some of the participants’ talks did not at all reflect their actual content. For example, Donna Nassur’s topic was “End to the Violence: A Restorative Approach,” however no approach, restorative or otherwise, to the end of violence was offered. Ms Nassur showed pictures of the security barrier Israel has been erecting which, in some places, bisects Arab villages and streets, saying in dismay, “We all cried it was so disturbing”. We all know that the occupants of these villages are hurting. However, the topic of the panel, The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, by definition implies a duality. There are two sides to this conflict.

Not a Rubber Bullet...

...a rock killed the girl, in what was almost a repeat of the Al Dura affair. Richard Landes discusses the sad case of ten year old Abir Aramin: Al Durah II? The MSM Reports Again “According to Palestinian Sources

CAMERA has a post on the latest case of an accusation against Israel for killing a Palestinian child, Abir Aramin. Witnesses claim she was killed by rubber bullets. The autopsy formally contradicts such a claim. But not before the MSM got to work. Below the posting at CAMERA with comments...

This stuff will be important to keep on hand when the inevitable accusations start up. A quick trip and eventual autopsy in an Israeli hospital seem to have put a damper on the initial accusations and potential use of this death as a fulcrum of hatred. The background of the father is an interesting story.

PMW: Palestinian street named for Saddam Hussein was paved with USAID money

Your tax dollars at work. Here's the latest from Palestinian Media Watch (not yet online as of the time of this post):

Palestinian street named for Saddam Hussein was paved with USAID money
by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook

After Saddam Hussein's execution, the Palestinian Municipality of Yaabid decided to name both a school and its main street after the Iraqi dictator. It appears that the same street was paved 18 months ago using grants from USAID.

This is not the first time that US money has gone to build Palestinian infrastructures that are named to glorify terrorists and enemies of the US. Three examples:

1. After the US gave the Jenin municipality money for road works in the city, a block in the center of Jenin was named for the first Iraqi suicide terrorist who killed four American soldiers in Fallujah. The mayor of Jenin participated in the anti-American rally and the speakers blessed the “resistance of the residents of Fallujah” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, April 4, 2004].

2. USAID funded the building of the Salaf Khalef Sports Center. Salef Khalef (Abu Iyad) the head of the Black September terror organization, was behind the killing of two US diplomats in Sudan and the 11 Israeli Olympic athletes. [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May, 30, 2004]

3. USAID funded renovations of the Dalal Mughrabi School named in honor of Dalal Mughrabi and her terror group, who killed American photographer Gail Rubin and 36 Israelis. [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, December 14, 2004]

The following is the article on the naming of Saddam Hussein Street:

“In the Yaabid Municipality… thousands of citizens held a requiem for the soul of Saddam in the mosque. Following that, a march began in the streets of the municipality, that ended at the offices of the Yaabid Municipality, where a mourners’ tent was opened in his memory. Public figures and the [Armed] Factions in Yaabid decided to name one of the schools in the municipality and its most important street after Saddam to immortalize his memory and to emphasize the values of Arabness and Jihad, which he represented…” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, January 4, 2007]

The following is from the PMW archives on the USAID funding:

“The Yaabid Municipality in the Jenin area held a ceremony yesterday for the inauguration of a project of the paving of the main street of the municipality, funded by the United Stated Agency for International Development (USAID)… The project of paving and renovating the main entrance to the municipality and some of the inner streets is three kilometers long and cost $402,000.” [Al-Ayyam, July 14, 2005]

Pajamas Media Presidential Straw Poll

PJM has one of those online polls up. You can vote once a week, one vote for each party. Obviously, these things are totally non-scientific and meant to generate something to talk about, but they are occasionally interesting, and can show trends.

So vote early, vote once a week (per IP). (Click on the spot under "Presidential Straw Poll" where it says "Click to Enter Voting Booth.") Vote Kucinich!

Exclusive: The Islamic Society of Boston and Intimidation 101 by Charles Jacobs

Special to Solomonia! Charles Jacobs, President of The David Project has a few things to say about the litigious Islamic Society of Boston (search results show oldest results first, scroll down for most recent), exclusively via this site. The ISB has filed multiple lawsuits against people who have dared to ask questions about its multi-million dollar Boston Mosque project. This entry will remain at the top for today at least, so scroll down for new entries:

The Islamic Society of Boston and Intimidation 101

The Islamic Society of Boston (ISB) denies that it has any intention of intimidating people or trying to stifle their First Amendment rights — even though it is suing an Islamic cleric, a Christian political science professor, the Jewish daughter of Holocaust survivors, various journalists, non-profits and researchers who had the nerve to raise questions about the Society’s funding and leadership, and about the somewhat extraordinary nature of a deal by which it received public land at a fraction of its fair market value.

To repeat: They are not trying to intimidate or stifle free speech. That's why in an August, 2006 letter to Michael Graham and WTKK, who had the nerve to discuss these matters publicly, the Islamic Society's counsel warned Graham and his station that they might be subject to legal action if there were further broadcasts. The ISB's counsel closed his letter with the following warning:
"Please instruct your show's producer to keep and maintain the master copy of yesterday and today's radio program as well as any future radio programs which concern, reference or mention the ISB".

Intimidation? Nah. Just a little reminder that journalists who are thinking about writing or speaking about the issues raised by the Boston Redevelopment Authority's (BRA) transfer of public land to the ISB at a fraction of its cost, or the role of BRA Deputy Director Muhammed Ali-Salaam in this amazing transaction, or about the past and present leaders of the ISB, or about its funding, may want to think twice. The ISB wants them to know that the ISB will be watching them.

But it isn't intimidation. Not at all.

Charles Jacobs, President
The David Project

How Arafat Got Away with Murder

PowerLine's Scott Johnson has probably the best sum-up of how the US Government, and particularly the US State Department spent over 30 years covering up the murder of two of its own -- George Curtis Moore and Cleo Noel, Jr. -- to benefit that monster Arafat and grease the wheels of diplomacy, diplomacy that got us less than nowhere: How Arafat Got Away with Murder.

Be sure to read it all if you're not familiar with the case or need a refresher.

Crittenden: Law and History

Jules Crittenden points out Benny Morris's Iranian Holocaust essay, first pointed to here, now reprinted in the Jerusalem Post, as an intro to his own excellent column today: Law and History

...Congress is preparing a resolution to undercut the president’s plan to bring stability to Iraq. And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has warned George Bush must seek congressional approval before attacking Iran. That prospect is raised by Bush’s threat to interdict Iran’s support for Iraq’s Shiite militias and Sunni insurgents, and by the dispatch of a second aircraft carrier group to the Persian Gulf. Congress of course approved regime change and the invasion of Iraq, a venture now jeopardized by Iranian interference. Our hostilities with Iran date to the 1979 hostage crisis and continued through the Iranian-sponsored murder of 241 U.S. Marines in Lebanon in 1983 to the Iranian-sponsored murder of thousands of U.S. troops in Iraq today.

Iran now seeks to dominate the world’s richest oil-producing region with terrorism, nuclear weapons and the manipulation of puppet states. An overt declaration of war against Iran could be warranted. But it would be window dressing, and Congress shows no inclination to pursue the vital interests of this nation. That leaves the president, in lonely leadership, to act as the found fathers envisioned he might have to. Alone, without interference...

Crittenden's essay hits the spot, and his relating the situation to the real Vietnam narrative is particularly to the point. Severe action against Syria and Iran for their interference in Iraq is now years overdue (and note, I'm not necessarily talking about a full scale invasion). Most people may poll that they don't like what's happening in Iraq, but that doesn't mean they don't want it to work out, they just don't trust the guy at the top to get it right. Bush appears to be belatedly trying to turn the screws to salvage this thing, and some people are trying to hang weights around his neck. Why, it's almost as though they don't want the Iraq project to be successful.

Kenneth Stein at Temple Emanuel

I just wanted to note the event I attended at Temple Emanuel in Newton last Thursday. AIPAC sponsored an appearance by the former Carter Center official who was the first to tender his resignation over Carter's new book. Kenneth Stein was the center's first director and has worked closely with Carter for decades, even helping to author a book with him. When he started to receive calls and emails from friends and former students asking how he could have had anything to do with an abomination like Carter's latest, he knew he had to distance himself from the thing, and thus his resignation.

No audio as the organizers made it clear that the event was "off the record," though the hall was packed...maybe 1000 people? Not sure how many people fit in there, but it was a lot.

Stein used a PowerPoint presentation to detail some of the factual errors in the book -- from his error-ridden explanation of 242, to his topsy-turvy explanation of his Damascus meeting with Assad, to his lying about the motivations of Hamas. He explained that his respect for Carter's intellect is such (Stein feels Carter may be one of the most intelligent men to ever serve in the office) that he does not believe the grievous misrepresentations in the work could be anything but intentional, and that Carter is basically doing politics not history, and that this is a shame, since Carter's book, errors and all, will now be part of the record people use to learn about the conflict.

There was a brief Q&A via written questions. I didn't get my question answered, but I'm still curious. It was something like this: "Your resignation was one of, I believe, 15 from the Carter Center to date, all Jews. Two questions: Why so comparatively few? And where are your non-Jewish colleagues?"

Aside: Here's a lengthy article on Carter by Joshua Muravchik that appears in Commentary. I'm just starting it: Our Worst Ex-President

Daniel Pipes survives Livingstone's Lions' Den

Excellent report on the London conference sponsored by "Red" Ken Livingstone, at Adloyada: Daniel Pipes survives Livingstone's Lions' Den. A snip:

I went to hear Daniel Pipes speak at SOAS on Thursday night. I came away very gloomy about Saturday's debate with Ken Livingstone. Pipes had been so negative - Oslo was a failure, the peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan had been failures, Israel has lost through diplomacy what it gained militarily, diplomacy is almost hopeless, the only solution will be when one side gives up its aspirations, the NGOs should adopt the same definition of 'refugee' as UNHCR - someone who has personally fled rather than including the children and grandchildren of a first generation refugee too.

I’m so happy to admit that I could not have been more wrong. Pipes was magnificent at the Conference. Daniel went into the lion’s den and not only did he survive, he pulverised the lion.

Moreover, he (and his co-speaker, Douglas Murray) got just as much applause as Ken and his co-speaker, Councillor Salma Yaqoob. This was quite remarkable, given the timing of the Conference, which meant that many in the Jewish community missed the daytime programme. And yet more – Israel was not even mentioned in any of the four principal morning speeches on the main topic...

Ben-Dror Yemini: And The World Pays

Third and final in the series, and another must read, Ben-Dror Yemini takes a look at the biggest welfare people on the planet: And The World Pays

According to world opinion, the Palestinians are the most wretched people in the world. The most oppressed people on earth. This is a national group that incorporates a significant part of the image of the victim. Numerous publications deal with this wretchedness, with the poverty, with the refugee status that has continued for decades. Here, too, the connection between the facts and the publicity is less than nothing.

Yemini's first two pieces can be found here: And the World is Silent and here: “And the World is Lying” - The Plight of the Refugees.

The entirety of this piece is also pasted into the extended entry below.

Perfume of Resistance

The scent of Nasrallah, the stench of love. In TNR: Eau No (also in the forum if registration is a problem - also requires one-time registration): hezblabel.jpg

Last summer, during the war with Israel, Hezbollah's Al Manar satellite TV channel ran an advertisement featuring Reem Haidar, an attractive Lebanese woman with a special request for Hezbollah leader Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah. "I want his cloak that he sweated in while he was defending me, my children, my sisters, and my land," said Haidar, with a toss of her highlighted hair, as martial music played in the background. "I want it so that I can rub some of its sweat on myself and my children. Maybe they can also distribute pieces of it to the people, so that they can soak up some dignity, honor, and nobility." In her sunglasses, plunging v-neck, and red bandanna, Haidar made quite an impression. Al Manar put the Haidar clip in heavy rotation, and, after the war, she got her wish: Hezbollah presented her with Nasrallah's presumably sweat-soaked clerical robe...

...The Attar (literally, essence) of Resistance comes in jasmine, gardenia, and tea rose (the latter, because it supposedly found favor with Iranian Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, is rumored to be Nasrallah's personal pick). The slender vials are packaged in little laminated folders with excerpts from Nasrallah's speeches printed inside. On the front, Nasrallah waves a hortatory hand, with Lebanese and Hezbollah flags fluttering behind him, while a missile sinks an Israeli gunboat. On the back, there's a photo collage of lilies and rocket launchers. All this for $1? Who could resist?...

...In Lebanon, the word "resistance" often denotes Hezbollah's rockets, missiles, and machine guns, which the United States and Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's government want to take away. But it also has a broader meaning: of popular struggle against Israel, the United States, or Western powers. For Khalil--who is also a poet, prisoners' rights activist, and occasional independent political candidate--the resistance doesn't have to be violent. "I don't believe in weapons or arms," says Khalil, who deplores the September 11 attacks on the United States. "There are many ways of resisting. Resistance can be a word; it can take many forms." Like perfume.

Khalil's inspiration came on September 22, 2006, five weeks after the end of last summer's war, when Hezbollah staged an enormous rally in the bombed-out ruins of the Shia neighborhoods where its offices used to be. As hundreds of thousands packed into the newly cleared square to celebrate the "divine victory," Khalil looked around and saw a sea of trinkets bearing pictures of Nasrallah. "I decided that I wanted people to have something more enduring," says Khalil. "I wanted people to know the essence of the resistance."...

Egyptian blogger critical of Islam goes on trial

CAIRO -- An Egyptian blogger went on trial yesterday on charges of insulting Islam and causing sectarian strife with his Internet writings.

As Egypt begins its first prosecution of a blogger, Washington is backing away from pressuring its Mideast ally to improve its human rights record and bring democratic reform.

Abdel Kareem Nabil often denounced Islamic authorities on his Arabic-language blog, and criticized President Hosni Mubarak. Nabil has been in detention since November and faces up to nine years in prison if convicted.

Egypt has arrested a string of pro democracy bloggers over the past year, sparking condemnation from human rights groups...

China shoots down satellite, drawing protests worldwide

Not comforting:

The Chinese military used a ground-based missile to hit and destroy one of its aging satellites orbiting more than 500 miles in space last week -- a high-stakes test demonstrating China's ability to target regions of space that are home to US spy satellites and space-based missile defense systems.

The test of anti satellite technology is believed to be the first of its kind in two decades by any nation and raised concerns about the vulnerability of US satellites and a possible arms race in space.

China's action drew sharp protests from other nations with satellite programs -- a predictable response that experts said dramatically illustrates Chinese willingness to face broad international criticism when it comes to space, which Beijing considers a key part of the push to modernize its military and increase its ability to compete in high-tech warfare...

Israel grows beating heart tissue, blood vessels

I think Saudi Arabia develops...Wahhabism or something...

Israel grows beating heart tissue, blood vessels

Beating cardiac tissue has been created in the lab from human embryonic stem cells by researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology's biomedical engineering faculty and the Rappaport Medical Faculty. In addition, researchers Dr. Shulamit Levenberg and Prof. Lior Gepstein also managed to bring about the creation of tiny blood vessels within the tissue, which makes possible their tissue's implantation in a human heart.

With help from doctoral student Oren Caspi and master's degree student Ayelet Lassman, the Technion researchers said that without the new blood vessels, the tissue would be likely to die quickly. "In our work," said Levenberg, "we showed the importance of endothelial cells (from which coronary vessels are composed) that induce the differentiation of stem cells into heart cells and their organization as tissue and encourage their multiplication. That is, it's important to create cardiac tissue with all the cells that compose them. In this case, it is endothelial cells, cardiac cells and cells that support blood vessels."...

Canadian Union rejects boycott of Israel

Some good news out of Canada for a change, although note the twisted tone of this article, which ought to be subtitled, "The Lobby bullies on free speech." Union rejects boycott of Israel:

Emotionally loaded Middle East politics made another brief -- albeit short-lived -- foray into the world of Canadian trade unions yesterday as a branch of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation voted down motions to boycott Israel and condemn it for its treatment of Palestinians.

Brought forward as a single motion by two Toronto-area teachers and split into two motions during debate last night, the issue sparked the wrath of several Jewish lobby groups.

B'nai Brith and the Jewish Defence League had described an earlier motion as propaganda and said it could easily morph into racism. The teachers' union shot back that the lobby groups were engaging in what amounted to a bullying campaign aimed at stifling free speech...

The JDL? Really? Conclusion:

...Mr. Kunin and Mr. Hulays returned this year with the new motion, which was split last night into two separate motions. Both were voted down, but Jewish groups had already shown their displeasure.

And that is supposed to mean...what, exactly? Jewish groups aren't supposed to speak out on issues of import to them the same way every other group does? Or Jewish groups have some shadowy power, that somehow when Jews speak out it's particularly unfair in some way?

The Islamic Society of Boston's New Face, New Cash, and a Grand Jury for the Immigration Imams...

Miss Kelly has four must-read posts on local stuff with national reach (in each case I've provided a snip of the post, but there's much more at the links):

First, she posts a look at the newest public face for the ISB, "revert," Jessica Masse: Jessica Masse - New ISB Spokesman

There is a great deal going on under the surface in the Muslim communities in the Boston area. I have an imperfect understanding of what's going on (to say the least), but nonetheless I try to point out and comment on things that strike me as significant, but that aren't getting coverage in the media. Today and tomorrow, I'll try to tackle some recent developments one by one. Today we start with Jessica Masse, the new interfaith coordinator and spokesman for the Islamic Society of Boston (ISB)...

Of course, the new spokesperson is screaming persecution...pay no attention to that Saudi behind the curtain: Middle Eastern Funding of ISB Mosque:

...Ms. Masse, it's not news to anybody that the Saudi government and Saudi organizations have been financially supporting and exporting a radical Wahabi/Salafi version of Islam around the world for a few decades now. Many Muslims decry the increasing influence of Saudi fundamentalism in mosques across Europe, Southeast Asia, Northern Africa and the U.S. A moderate imam in Dublin, Ireland (of all places!) is speaking out forcefully against the Islamic extremism he sees in mosques. While we cannot assume that any Saudi funding is linked to terrorism, it is reasonable and prudent to investigate Middle Eastern funding of a mosque in Boston, Massachusetts. It is worthy of scrutiny...

Damn straight.

Regarding our local "Immigration Imams" case, while the local press has so far ignored the connection, Miss Kelly has a post once again pointing out the family ties the guys have to a well known Pakistani terrorist: Speaking of Hafiz Saeed and the LeT...:

Well, actually we were speaking about Imam Hafiz Muhammed Masood, former former imam from the Islamic Center of New England. While no local papers have reported this, Masood happens to the brother of Hafiz Saeed, the founder of a notorious terrorist group in Pakistan, Lashkar-e-Toiba (LET). It's been reported in newspapers in India and Pakistan, but not in the U.S. Not sure why, that sounds like news to me.

It also turns out that the other arrested imam, Hafiz Muhammad Hannan of the Islamic Society of Lowell, is Saeed's brother-in-law. And Hafiz Mahmood Hamid, the imam of the Islamic Society of Greater Worcester, is Saeed's brother. What a curious family affair we have going on here in Massachusetts! What are the chances?...

Finally, word has it that a Federal Grand Jury has been convened in Boston on this issue: Patriot Ledger: Imam may be forced out of home: Asked to leave mosque grounds while he awaits visa hearing:

With his visa status already in question, the spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of New England’s mosque in Sharon may soon be a man without a home.

The directors of the Islamic Center have given the Imam Muhammed Masood and his family notice to leave their residence on the grounds of the Sharon mosque.

Brookline attorney George Garfinkle, representing the board, said last night the Pakistani cleric has been asked to leave ‘‘sometime soon,’’ though not by a specific date...

...Garfinkle also confirmed that some former Islamic Center board members have been called before a federal grand jury in Boston over the past month in connection with the investigation of Imam Masood’s alleged visa violations.

He did not identify who was called. Board president Rashid Noor of Norton declined comment about the grand jury appearances.

Imam Masood is expected to have a visa hearing within the next few months. He could be deported at that time...

Miss Kelly comments on this latest development, here: Imam Masood Subject of Federal Grand Jury?

Leave it to Lane Lambert of the Patriot Ledger to get the scoop here. Imam Hafiz Muhammed Masood, one of two area imams arrested in religious visa fraud charges last November (2006), apparently was the subject of a Federal Grand Jury this week...

Follow all the links above and you'll be pretty well caught up on all these Boston-area developments.

Genetic Nationalism

We've discussed the issue briefly here before, but Diana Muir Appelbaum and Paul S. Appelbaum have a lengthier and very interesting look at the science and the implications of the nexus of genetic studies and national rights in Azure: The Gene Wars

Macedonian nationalists want Greece back, or at least its northern provinces. Their latest weapon is an obscure genetic study, which claims that while Macedonians belong to the older Mediterranean substratum of peoples, Greeks do not. Consequently, the study concludes, the Macedonians predate even the earliest Greek civilization.1 Among Macedonian political activists who believe that Greece “has held Macedonian territory illegally for… ninety-three years” and who dream of the re-unification of historical ethnic Macedonia, there is considerable excitement at the prospect of their view that Macedonians “are the oldest people living in the Balkans” being genetically corroborated.2 Welcome to the gene wars.

Genetically based claims to sovereignty are the newest tactics employed in old struggles over national sovereignty and borders.3 They are used to support assertions of historical primacy, the principle that the first of the nations still existing to have established collective life on a specific territory has a right to statehood there. The desire to claim historical primacy is so strong that national groups of recent origin and nations that arrived comparatively recently to the territory where they now demand sovereignty are inclined to invent histories alleging ancient roots...

ADL: Anti-Semitism in Arab Media

MEMRI: Former Hizbullah Sec-Gen: Hizbullah is an Integral Part of Iranian Intelligence; The Abduction of the Israeli Soldiers Was an 'Unsuccessful Adventure'

MEMRI: Former Hizbullah Sec-Gen: Hizbullah is an Integral Part of Iranian Intelligence; The Abduction of the Israeli Soldiers Was an 'Unsuccessful Adventure'

In an interview with the Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyassa, former Hizbullah secretary-general Sheikh Subhi Al-Tufeili saidthat Hizbullah was part of Iranian intelligence, and called the July 12, 2006 abduction of two Israeli soldiers, which sparked the July-August 2006 war with Israel, an "unsuccessful adventure."

The following are excerpts from the interview. [1]

Hizbullah is an Integral Part of the Iranian Intelligence Apparatus

Question: "You were formerly Hizbullah secretary-general. Is the [situation in Lebanon] within the strategic framework of Hizbullah? Does Hizbullah have an outlined and prepared plan that is being implemented today? Why do you think Hizbullah has become a source of anxiety for the Lebanese? "

Al-Tufeili: "It wasn't like this in the beginning. Hizbullah's activity was limited to resistance [operations]... But, unfortunately, the problem has developed today to the point where they have succeeded in changing Hizbullah from a resistance force into a tool to be used in [whatever] direction they want."

Question: "Does this mean that Hizbullah does not make its own decisions, and that its orders come from outside [Lebanon]?"

Al-Tufeili: "Yes, Hizbullah is a tool, and it is an integral part of the Iranian intelligence apparatus. Unfortunately, all the elements in the [Lebanese] arena have become tools, and take orders from outside [Lebanon]..."...

..."Iran is the Main Nerve in the Activity Today in Lebanon"

Referring to Syria's role in the events in Lebanon, Al-Tufeili said: "Syria is undoubtedly Iran's ally. It has undoubtedly been harmed by the March 14 Forces, and by the establishment of the [international] court. Thus, it is part of this battle; but it is not the most influential factor...

"Iran is the main nerve in the activity today in Lebanon. All Hizbullah activity [is financed] by Iranian funds. Syria has an important role, but Iran is the main and primary support of [the Lebanese opposition]. On the other side, the U.S. is supporting the March 14 Forces."

Former U.S. Justice Department official: Jimmy Carter Interceded on Behalf of Nazi SS Guard

How the man thinks...

Arutz Sheva: Jimmy Carter Interceded on Behalf of Nazi SS Guard

Neal Sher, a veteran of the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigation, described a letter he received from Carter in 1987 in an interview with Israel National Radio’s Tovia Singer. The letter, written and signed by Carter, asked that Sher show “special consideration” for a man proven to have murdered Jews in the Mauthausen death camp in Austria...

...around that time, in the spring of 1987, we deported a series of SS guards from concentration camps, whose names nobody would know. One such character we sent back to Austria was a man named Martin Bartesch.”

Bartesch, who had immigrated to the U.S. and lived in Chicago, admitted to Sher’s office and the court that he had voluntarily joined the Waffen SS and had served in the notorious SS Death’s Head Division at the Mauthausen concentration camp where, at the hands of Bartesch and his cohorts, many thousands of prisoners were gassed, shot, starved and worked to death. He also confessed to having concealed his service at the infamous camp from U.S. immigration officials.

“We had an extraordinary piece of evidence against him – a book that was kept by the SS and captured by the American armed forces when they liberated Mauthausen,” Sher said. “We called it the death book. It was a roster that the Germans required them to keep that identified SS guards as they extended weapons to murder the inmates and prisoners.”

An entry in the book for October 10, 1943 registered the shooting death of Max Oschorn, a French Jewish prisoner. His murderer was also recorded: SS guard Martin Bartesch. “It was a most chilling document,” Sher recalled...

...“We kicked him out and he went back to Austria. In the meantime, his family – he had adult kids – went on a campaign, also supported by his church, to try to get special treatment. In so doing they attacked the activities of our office and me personally. They claimed we used phony evidence from the Soviet Union – which was nonsense. They claimed he was a young man of only 17 or 18 when he joined the Nazi forces, asking for some sympathetic treatment and defense from our office, which they claimed was just after vengeance.”

The family approached several members of Congress. “The congressmen would, very understandably, forward their claims over to our office and when they learned the facts they would invariably drop the case,” Sher recalled.

But there was one politician who accepted the claims without asking for any further information.

“One day, in the fall of ’87, my secretary walks in and gives me a letter with a Georgia return address reading ‘Jimmy Carter.’ I assumed it was a prank from some old college buddies, but it wasn’t. It was the original copy of the letter Bartesch’s daughter sent to Carter, after Bartesch had already been deported.

“In the letter, she claimed we were un-American, only after vengeance, and persecuting a man for what he did when he was only 17 and 18 years old.

“I couldn’t help thinking of my own father who returned home with shrapnel wounds after he joined the U.S. Army as a teenager to fight the Nazis and hit the beaches at Normandy at that same age on D-day.

“On the upper corner of the letter was a note signed by Jimmy Carter saying that in cases such as this, he wanted ‘special consideration for the family for humanitarian reasons.’

“I didn’t respond to the letter – the case was already over and he was out of the country – but it always stuck in my craw. A former president who didn’t do what I would expect him to do - with a full staff at his disposal – to find out the facts before he took up the side of this person. But I wasn’t going to pick a fight with a former president. We had enough on our plate.”

Now, following Carter’s book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, Sher has decided to go public...

Update: It Shines for All has a copy of the original Carter note.

Update 2: LGF points out a cautionary note from the guys at PowerLine, though they appear not to have seen the visual evidence at It Shines for All, it's worth noting until the document is authenticated.

Update 3: Fast and furious...PowerLine updates that the ISfA entry confirms the story.

Kids, Do NOT Try This At Home

Another boy dies copying Saddam Hussein's hanging

RABAT, Morocco (Reuters) -- A Moroccan man returned home to find his 11-year-old son hanging dead from the ceiling, a newspaper said on Thursday, the latest victim of a macabre game in which children mimic the death of Saddam Hussein.

The boy decided to copy the former Iraq leader's execution while playing with his younger sister at their home in Khemisset, 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of the capital of Rabat, newspaper Al Ahdat al-Maghrebia reported.

"The girl then went to school and left her brother playing his deadly game," it said, adding that local officials had opened an inquiry into the death...

...Since then, several stories have emerged of children dying or being injured after being captivated by the manner of Hussein's death or by family conversations about the execution.

One 12-year-old Saudi boy died after using a chair and a metal wire to hang himself from a door frame, while another in Algeria was found hanging from a tree, papers reported.

Two boys in different regions of Azerbaijan hanged themselves at the weekend and may have been influenced by Hussein's execution, a security source in the country said.

The death of a 15-year-old boy last week in the Moroccan coastal city of Casablanca was also suspected of being the result of another re-enactment...

..."It is a characteristic of the Muslim world that we have an over-politicized society. Everyone's into politics, discussing events in Palestine and Iraq and hooked on Al-Jazeera."...

We're often told that the Middle Eastern TV shows much more of the "bloody reality" of the region than do Western news sources. I don't think we're suffering for the difference.

Middle East Studies on the Defensive

At Campus Watch: Can Middle East Studies Regain Credibility? [on MESA, Rashid Khalidi, Joseph Massad, et al.]

...The publication of "Academic Freedom and Professional Responsibility after 9/11: A Handbook for Scholars and Teachers" by the Taskforce on Middle East Anthropology testifies to the effectiveness of organizations and individuals whose critiques of Middle East studies and higher education have put the professoriate on the defensive. Absent these efforts to shed light on the abuses so common in the discipline, the mandarins of MES would never have bowed to public opinion with this welcome, but flawed, document.

Among those recognizing the new reality are Laura Bier, who teaches at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In April 2006, she penned pseudonymous essay in the Chronicle of Higher Education lamenting an article written by a Tech student that criticized Bier's talk at a pro-Palestinian event on campus. Eschewing such a dramatic gesture this round, Bier's name appears as one of the co-authors of the handbook. For good measure, the document is endorsed by such MES luminaries as Rashid Khalidi of Columbia and Zachary Lockman of New York University.

If one emotion pervades the handbook, it is alarm: The field is presented as embattled, in crisis, and on the run. Professors who a few years ago were confident enough to wear their politics on their sleeves by bullying students (as Joseph Massad did at Columbia) or assuming that activism could substitute for scholarly accomplishment in their climb up the academic ladder (as Juan Cole tried at Yale) have discovered to their chagrin that their actions are now deemed newsworthy.

Indeed, a more accurate subtitle might have been, "How Do We Fix this Mess?"...

I spoke to someone who attended MESA's recent convention in Boston and he told me the event was even worse than he had imagined it would be with regard to politics and agenda-driven (whipped!) academics.

The Cat Keeps Draggin' in Andover

See, here's why you don't bring "controversial" people in to a reputable venue just for the sake of it, or just for the selfish reason of using them for your kids when there are other methods of achieving the same thing available.

Now the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune has decided to print an entire Op-Ed from that doofus Qumsiyeh: Zionism keeps Israelis, Palestinians apart

In hundreds of presentations we did at middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities and elsewhere, Andover was only the second time we were "disinvited." We want to thank the teachers who invited us and the hundreds of students who worked diligently to make sure they hear us. The events went well at the classes and we received countless positive emails from students, teachers, parents and community members.

The Wheels of Justice brings eyewitness accounts to occupations in Iraq and Palestine. Our speakers come from various political backgrounds; the only requirement is that they support the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and support nonviolence as an alternative to war and injustice. We also recognize that to achieve peace anywhere in the world, the root causes of injustice, racism and oppression must be addressed. We also have speakers who are Jewish and even Holocaust survivors (e.g. 80 year-old Hedy Epstein)...

Blah and blah and blah...you can read the whole thing yourself if you like. Amazingly dishonest drivel. I know the response letters are coming in. For instance, this one, from Jon H.:

To the editors: I suspect the Davis and Tomales High Schools in California, as well as the Fieldston School in New York (just three of who-knows-how-many more schools which cancelled Wheels of Justice appearances) would be surprised that Andover was "only the second time [Wheels] was "disinvited" from a school (as claimed by Wheels spokesperson Mazin Qumsiyeh in the most recent issue of the Eagle Tribune). Certainly the rest of Mr. Qumsiyeh's piece, consisting of the same misleading quotes, biased sources and false accusations that characterized Wheel's performance at Andover High (although, thankfully, without the bad rap music), should be read with an understanding that the writer could not seem to get past his first sentence without telling a lie.

I'm betting you there's a very good reason that WoJ plays their schedule so close to their chest...because once the authorities find out who they really are and what they're really about, they're far less likely to want anything to do with them. They get in and get out...fast.

Here's one from Franck S.:

The Middle East is a heterogeneous lot in the extreme. In their modern configuration, Middle Eastern states, all of which are artificial creations—with Israel, Lebanon, and Egypt possessing perhaps some historical depth upon which to base their modern incarnations—derive their legitimacy largely from traditional prescription and religious—mainly Islamic—warrant. For Mr. Qumsiyyeh to single out Israel among Middle Eastern states as “the only country… that defines itself as a country for and by” its dominant ethno-religious group is mendacious, unscrupulous, hypocritical, and misleading to say the least. Had Mr. Qumsiyyeh had a single shred of integrity, he would have openly recognized that not unlike Israel, all modern Middle Eastern countries are recognized and view themselves through what is called the "millet" system. All these "millet" successor states—save Israel—neither recognize nor protect the rights of those individuals who do not belong to the dominant religion of Islam. Israel on the other hand, although ostensibly privileges citizens of Jewish ancestry, is a vibrant democracy with a vocal citizenry, universal suffrage, a rigorous judiciary, and open recourse to the law; for Jews and non-Jews alike; which is more than one can say with regards to any other Middle Eastern country. Israel is perhaps not a perfect democracy; no true democracy is! But compared to the totalitarian theocracies of its neighborhood—where Copts, Assyrians, Maronites, Jews and other non-Arabs and non-Muslims have been festering in institutionalized and religiously sanctioned systems of unequal relationships for centuries—Israel is the closest the Middle East has come to a “promised land” in a long time.

For the rest, Mr. Qumsiyyeh’s piece is redolent with the usual hackneyed anti-Semitic screed that hardly merits the 1000-word column-space in the Tribune, let alone the virtue of a response.

The Eagle-Tribune itself had it right in their December 14 editorial where they said:

Michael Yon: 'Iraq is very winnable'

The guys at Pundit Review interviewed Michael Yon live from Mosul, Iraq and have posted the interview on their site:

Former Green Beret, embedded citizen journalist and our friend Michael Yon joined us live from Mosul Iraq on Pundit Review Radio this weekend.

Michael had a surprisingly upbeat assessment of what's he's seen in the three weeks since he returned to Iraq as an embed. This was a much different view than what he shared with us last spring when he gave us a rather grim assessment. Michael discussed the improvement in the spirit and capabilities of the Iraqi security forces. He talked about the stark difference between the high spirits of the military men and women in Iraq with those who they are serving back at home. It is nothing short of amazing. He also laid to rest on of the most bothersome, dangerous myths of this war, that the people of Iraq "aren't doing enough". Finally, he told us about the type of man Gen. Petraeus is and we discussed the so-called surge plan...

Afghan Citizens Prevent Terrorist Attack on U.S. Base

From a DoD Press Release:

KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 16, 2007 – Two Afghan citizens prevented a terrorist attack this morning when a vehicle loaded with explosives attempted to crash through the front gate of Camp Phoenix, a U.S. base here. "Without any regard for their personal safety, a local Afghan security officer and an interpreter immediately recognized that this was a terrorist attack," said 1st Lt. Cathrin Fraker, a spokeswoman for Task Force Phoenix.

"Together, the two prevented the driver from detonating his explosives after they failed to explode during the crash. With the assistance of the U.S. security forces, they dragged the terrorist from the vehicle, where U.S. security force soldiers then detained him," she explained.

The area was immediately evacuated, and an explosive ordnance disposal team was called to the scene.

Afghan security force soldiers, with assistance from the Afghan National Police and U.S. soldiers, immediately cordoned off the area and waited for the EOD team to disarm the bomb.

"If it wasn't for the quick actions of the local nationals working for the U.S. forces, several lives would have been lost," Army Col. David B. Enyeart, the deputy task force commander, said.

During an attempt to disarm the explosives, the device detonated, but no U.S. or coalition soldiers were injured, Fraker said.

"We are grateful for the bravery and the continued diligence of our Afghan partners and the security force soldiers and who protect this base," Enyeart said.

A Challenge for Executives at the TSA

Squaring the Boston Globe has a little test for the folks at the Transportation Security Administration, based on the Globe's "story of 6 suspects on trial in London for allegedly trying to bomb the London Underground in 2005." See if you can guess which photo is NOT of one of the suspects.

Totten: The Liberal Cleric of the Dahiyeh

Michael has posted another chapter in his report from Lebanon, this time discussing his interview with a liberal Shiah cleric living in Hizballah's neighborhood: The Liberal Cleric of the Dahiyeh

HARET HREIK, LEBANON – In the dahiyeh, the suburb, of Haret Hreik south of Beirut, where Hezbollah built its command and control center and the “capital” of its illegal state-within-a-state, lives Sayyed Mohammad Ali El Husseini, a moderate Shia cleric with a doctorate in religion from Qom in Iran, who steadfastly and publicly opposes Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah’s doctrine of war and jihad. He uses the Koran and the Islamic religion as the basis for an alternative vision of peace, independence, and democracy for the people of Lebanon.

My translator Henry informed me that Lebanese journalists are no longer allowed to publish or interview Sayyed Husseini. Dissent from the likes of this man is intolerable and has to be smashed. Hezbollah issued its threats. After the two-year spree of car-bombs against journalists, threats from Nasrallah pack weight.

Foreign journalists, though, are allowed to meet with Husseini. Foreign journalists can’t be managed and bullied the same way local journalists can. Foreigners like me are, so far anyway, outside the bounds of car-bombs and murders.

I met with Husseini in his modest apartment in the dahiyeh, within walking distance of the rubble that recently was Hezbollah’s “Security Square.”...

I found this interesting to note:

...Lebanese deserve most of the credit for ejecting the Syrians. If they hadn’t demanded the withdrawal of the Baath regime from their country, Bashar Assad would still be ruler of Lebanon. Nevertheless, the US government put enormous pressure on Assad to withdraw, and some Lebanese have told me it was this pressure that gave them the courage to demand withdrawal in the first place...

Take that, "realists!"

The whole thing is here.

Gay and Lesbian Life in the Middle East

Doug Ireland reviews Brian Whitaker's new book, UNSPEAKABLE LOVE: Gay and Lesbian Life in the Middle East:

When Tayseer, a Palestinian from Gaza, was 18, he was found in bed with a boyfriend by an older brother-and as a result was severely beaten by his family. His father threatened to strangle him if he ever had gay sex again.

A few months later, Tayseer was invited into an orange grove for sex by an undercover police agent of the Palestinian Authority, and subsequently arrested. Police told Tayseer that the only way for him to avoid prison was to become a Judas goat, to lure other gay men into sex so that they, too, could be arrested.

When he refused to be police bait in this entrapment scheme, Tayseer was hung by his arms from the ceiling. "A high-ranking officer he didn't know arranged for his release-and then demanded sex as payback."

When Tayseer fled Gaza for Tulkarem, he was eventually re-arrested, and forced to stand in neck-high sewage water with his head covered by a feces-filled sack. During one police interrogation, Tayseer was stripped and forced to sit on a Coke bottle...

You may or may not believe in "gay marriage," but I hope all of us in the West can agree that the penalty for being homosexual should not be anything like what's described in Whitaker's book. Columbia's Joseph Massad (who we've often discussed here) makes an appearance:

...One of the most useful chapters in the book is Whitaker's dissection and refutation of the arguments of Joseph Massad, a controversial Columbia University professor and author of a widely-circulated essay complaining that gay rights in Arab and Muslim countries represent an imperialist "missionary" project orchestrated by what he calls the "Gay International."

In concluding his rebuttal of Massad, Whitaker writes that the Columbia academic and his acolytes present the debate "as a choice between cultural authenticity on the one hand and the adoption of all things Western on the other. In fact, neither is a realistic proposition...

Ex-President for Sale, Part 2

Alan Dershowitz has written part 2 of his six part series on the Carter connections to Arab oil money. Here's a snip:

...It’s worth noting that, despite the influx of Saudi money funding the Carter Center, and despite the Saudi Arabian government’s myriad human rights abuses, the Carter Center’s Human Rights program has no activity whatever in Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have apparently bought his silence for a steep price. The bought quality of the Center’s activities becomes even more clear, however, when reviewing the Center’s human rights activities in other countries: essentially no human rights activities in China or in North Korea, or in Iran, Iraq, the Sudan, or Syria, but activity regarding Israel and its alleged abuses, according to the Center’s website. The Carter Center’s mission statement claims that “The Center is nonpartisan and acts as a neutral party in dispute resolution activities.” How can that be, given that its coffers are full of Arab money, and that its focus is away from significant Arab abuses and on Israel’s far less serious ones?

No reasonable person can dispute therefore that Jimmy Carter has been and remains dependent on Arab oil money, particularly from Saudi Arabia. Does this mean that Carter has necessarily been influenced in his thinking about the Middle East by receipt of such enormous amounts of money? Ask Carter. The entire premise of his criticism of Jewish influence on American foreign policy is that money talks. It is Carter—not me—who has made the point that if politicians receive money from Jewish sources, then they are not free to decide issues regarding the Middle East for themselves. It is Carter, not me, who has argued that distinguished reporters cannot honestly report on the Middle East because they are being paid by Jewish money. So, by Carter’s own standards, it would be almost economically “suicidal” for Carter “to espouse a balanced position between Israel and Palestine.”...

Here's the rest.

Egypt's Satellites

While Israel is pulling energy out of rocks, Egypt, a country who, I'm sorry to say, produces little of anything but anti-Semitic propaganda (though they do have some cool bloggers), can still manage to put highly advanced military satellites in orbit (at least, they can pay others to do it for them). What an age: Egypt to launch first spy satellite

In an effort to gain a foothold in space and gather intelligence on Israel and other Middle Eastern countries, Egypt plans to launch its first spy satellite on Tuesday from Kazakhstan.

The Egyptstat 1, which weighs just under 100 kilograms, will circle the earth at an altitude of 668 kilometers. Using a high-powered multi-spectrum telescopic camera, it will be capable of transmitting black-and-white, color and infrared images. The camera can spot objects on the ground as small as four meters across.

Egypt hopes to launch another satellite - called Desertstat - by the end of the year, currently under construction in Italy...

Edit: Maybe Egypt will be looking to pick up some hints on how to accomplish some of the things its neighbor has as shown in this video: Cool Facts About Israel

Israeli Company Turning shale and Asphalt Into Oil

What's the stock symbol?

Israel21c: Turning shale and asphalt into oil

An Israeli company intends to revolutionize oil production by recycling oil shale rock into high quality fuel.

Haifa-based A.F.S.K Hom Tov recently demonstrated its patented method of extracting high quality oil and natural gas from a mixture of bitumen and oil shale rock. Bitumen - or asphalt - is the residue obtained by distillation of crude oil.

Experts predict the process will return oil at just $25 dollars a barrel and the additional natural gas produced would further boost the financial feasibility. With crude oil prices currently floating over the $50 a barrel mark, this proposed method is generating interest around the world.

"The world is looking for a replacement for oil supplies," says attorney Moshe Shahal, a former Israeli energy minister and today the legal representative for Hom Tov.

The Hom-Tov process uses oil shale as a catalyst to extract combustible organic material from the residual bitumen byproduct of crude oil refineries. The end product from the process can easily be refined into high-grade petroleum and other fuels.

At present, oil refineries produce countless tons of bitumen residue every year that have little practical use or economic benefit and are an environmental hazard.

As a further bonus, the process converts the oil shale rock into a dry fuel in which the inorganic rock structure traps dangerous gases, such as sulfurous materials, preventing pollutant emissions to the atmosphere. The dry fuel byproduct could be burnt to power the Hom-Tov process itself as well provide additional electricity for the national grid...

What the cat dragged in to Andover High

Always interesting to see what comes along in the baggage train when a group like Wheels of Justice comes along. Let's take a look at a few letters to the editor and the like that have cropped up lately. One wonders how much responsibility a paper has to fact check letters they receive. Judging by Lawrence Eagle-Tribune standards, not much. Let's take a choice one, from a guy named Andy Beresford (no longer online, so here it is in full -- this post is long, so most of it is in the extended entry):

Benny Morris on the Upcoming Holocaust

The anti-Zionist Left's favorite out of context quoted historian writes for German publication Die Welt about a very bleak future. An English translation is available here: The second Holocaust will not be like the first

Here's the intro:

Benny Morris believes that the Iranian regime will annihilate Israel with nuclear weapons, and nobody will stop it in doing so. Morris used to have the reputation of being an Anti-Zionist, but he rejects the accusation that he questions Israel's right of existence. In this article written for DIE WELT, Morris explains why he is convinced that sometime in the future millions of Israelis will be murdered.

Morris hits a pivotal paragraph here:

...As with the first, the second Holocaust will have been preceded by decades of preparation of hearts and minds, by Iranian and Arab leaders, Western intellectuals and media outlets. Different messages have gone out to different audiences - but all have (objectively) served the same goal, the demonization of Israel. Muslims the world over have been taught: 'The Zionists\the Jews are the embodiment of evil' and 'Israel must be destroyed.' And Westeners, more subtly, were instructed: 'Israel is a racist oppressor state' and 'Israel, in this age of multi-culturalism, is an anachronism and superfluous'. Generations of Muslims and at least a generation of Westerners have been brought up on these catechisms.

The build-up to the second Holocaust (which, incidentally, in the end, will probably claim roughly the same number of lives as did the first) has seen an international community fragmented and driven by separate, selfish appetites - Russia and China obsessed with Muslim markets; France, with Arab oil - and the United States driven by the debacle in Iraq into a deep isolationism. Iran has been left free to pursue its nuclear destiny and Israel and Iran, to face off alone...

The demonization of Israel has served several different purposes in East and West. The Muslim world is psyching itself up to do something terrible, and the West is preparing itself to accept it.

Iraqi MP Iyad Jamal Al-Din: Democracy in the Middle East Can Only Be Established by Force

memribyforce.jpg

This guy has some interesting things to say (click the link to watch the video):

MEMRITV: Iraqi MP Iyad Jamal Al-Din: Democracy in the Middle East Can Only Be Established by Force

Following are excerpts from an interview with Iraqi MP Iyad Jamal Al-Din, which aired on Al-Jazeera TV on December 28, 2006.

Interviewer: How can the Iraqi public, which is anti-American, and which believes the U.S. is the Great Satan, support people who talk the way you do?

Iyad Jamal Al-Din: Whoever believes America is the Great Satan should not shake its hand. I do not consider the U.S. to be the Great Satan. I view it as the sponsor and founder of the project of democracy, and the defender of democracy in Iraq. You can be sure that if America were to withdraw today, there would be Shiite massacres of Shiites, Sunni massacres of Sunnis, and Kurdish massacres of Kurds. The strong would again devour the weak until somebody would be back the next day – there's no doubt about it. We are still far from democracy.

Interviewer: On what do you base your trust of the U.S. and its plans for the region?

Iyad Jamal Al-Din: Democracy is the religion of the dollar and serves its global interests. This dollar has a spirited life – it is dear, honorable, and loveable. It gets vexed real quickly, get it? Dollar has a religion. The religion of the dollar is democracy. This applies to the entire world, because the dollar cannot thrive in dictatorial countries, but only in democracies. For the sake of their global economy, [the Americans] establish democracy. We, the oppressed and slaughtered peoples, have seen nothing but stupid dictators or wise dictators. It's one of the two. Wise dictators pave roads and build houses, but they are still dictators. On the other hand, there are stupid dictators, like our friend who has gone. We are very far from democracy. It is inconceivable that we endured this humiliation and tyranny for 1,400 years, yet we are unable to create a democracy. Even after 1,400 years, our culture is still...

Interviewer: Democracy has resulted in what is now happening in Iraq.

Iyad Jamal Al-Din: The result of democracy... We don't know... We are very far from liberty. Do we even know what to do with the values of liberty? The moment Saddam's club was lifted from over our heads, each and every one of us wanted to assume Saddam's personality. We had one Saddam, and now we have six, seven, ten, or fifteen Saddams. We now have local mini-Saddams. I said this before the war. I said that America would do us a favor by ridding us of Saddam the dictator, but that this favor would be incomplete unless it rids us of the opposition parties. But this did not happen during the war. These people are photo-copies of Saddam. Saddam was in power for 35 years, and so was the leader of this or that opposition party - not only in Iraq, but in all Arab and Islamic countries. The opposition is the mirror image of the regime. If we want to simplify matters, how come Hosni Mubarak has ruled for 23 power? I want to rule in his place, not because I want to change the nature of the regime, to make it a democracy, which respects human beings and private property... We are still far from all this. Therefore, in my opinion, democracy can be established in our region only through force. Democracy must be established by force, and only America can do it.

Butt Smearing Teacher Shown the Door

The Virginia high school teacher who spent his off hours smearing his privates with paint and selling the results in his off hours has been fired by unanimous vote of the local school committee: Teacher fired for creating butt art

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The "butt-printing artist" is getting his butt kicked out of the classroom. The Chesterfield County, Virginia, School Board has voted unanimously to fire high school art teacher Stephen Murmer. He has a thriving sideline business of creating abstract paintings with his rear end. He smears paint on his nether regions and presses them against canvas. His paintings sell for up to 900 bucks each. Murmer maintains that what he does is perfectly legal and is kept private from the students. But members of the school board said Murmer's butt painting activities could lead to disruptions in the classroom. Murmer's lawyer says the decision to fire the teacher amounts to a bad day for the constitution.

See, if he'd only confined himself to anti-Semitic raving and organizing, he'd probably still be employed.

Sins on the Seine

Noah Pollack (by coincidence one of Michael J. Totten's traveling companions, and someone I met very briefly on my recent trip), reviews David Pryce-Jones' new book, Betrayal: France, the Arabs, and the Jews:

...Betrayal: France, the Jews, and the Arabs started as a long essay in Commentary, but even in its extended form is only a slender 171 pages. It is nonetheless a devastating catalogue of both France’s depredations, first against the Jews, and now against Israel, and its institutionalized policy of favoritism toward the Muslim Middle East. Pryce-Jones’ central charge is that France’s desire to be the Middle East’s most ostentatiously helpful European ally, combined with its governing elite’s enthusiasm for anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, has caused France to enter into a Faustian bargain with the Muslim world -- an arrangement that has repeatedly proven destructive both to France’s foreign policy interests and to its own vaingloriously celebrated values. France’s posture toward Muslims, Pryce-Jones declares, “has been what the Maginot Line was militarily, a masking of reality, a standing invitation to self-deception.”...

A fascinating history.

You wrote: > The Nation of Israel has existed for 5,700 years ... The problem is that you actually believe this utter nonsense!

It's like Hitler saying "the German people have existed for 2000 years",
or whatever. It is worse than lie -- a delusion.

There is no "Jewish people." It does not exist. It is a fiction, like
that of the "German Volk (= people)", or the "Aryan race."

If it were just a delusion, it would not be so bad. But it is a
nationalist, racist delusion exactly like that of Hitler's "German people."

It is used as an excuse for exploitation, murder, and eternal war.

Zionism is a filthy ideology, it's true. But it is one that exists to
justify mass murder, just like Naziism.

It'll go the same way Naziism went, too.

A Special Bond: Martin Luther King, Jr., Israel and American Jewry

Some interesting stuff on MLK:

...Referring to the stake U.S. oil companies have in the Middle East, Dr. King went on to note that “some Arab feudal rulers are no less concerned for oil wealth and neglect the plight of their own peoples. The solution will have to be found in statesmanship by Israel and progressive Arab forces who in concert with the great powers recognize fair and peaceful solutions are the concern of all humanity and must be found.”

Were Dr. King’s comments to Held intended only to soothe a miffed supporter? Hardly. In a March 25, 1968 speech to the Rabbinical Assembly, Dr. King said: “peace for Israel means security, and we must stand with all our might to protect its right to exist, its territorial integrity. I see Israel as one of the great outposts of democracy in the world, and a marvelous example of what can be done, how desert land can be transformed into an oasis of brotherhood and democracy. Peace for Israel means security and that security must be a reality.” Less than two weeks later, on April 4, Dr. King was murdered while organizing support for striking sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee...

The rest is here. [h/t: Susan A.]

Of course, some people see it differently, Ron Francis's friends have already sent out a message to protest the appearance of Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick at Temple Israel in Brookline tonight:

A call to action from Boston Anti-Zionist Action Demonstration for Palestine and African freedom

Stand out for Human Rights in Palestine and Massachusetts and against Deval Patrick, Zionism and the police state

Tomorrow Friday January 12, Deval Patrick will be speaking at the "MLK Shabbat" at Temple Israel at 477 Longwood Ave (corner of Longwood Ave & the Riverway, near Longwood Green Line T Stop). Temple Israel is an institution that has long and ardently opposed civil rights and human rights in Palestine. Temple Israel supports the Zionist genocidal project against the Arab people of Palestine and other countries in the Middle East, and specifically supported the Zionist attacks against the people of Lebanon and the Gaza Strip this year. It is obscene for this institution to have an event ostensibly honoring Martin Luther King Jr., a man who was murdered and martyred for his work for civil rights and against war...

It gets even better.

The Legacy of Anti-Semitism: A Shared Sin

Diana West reviews PBS's special on the roots of anti-Semitism, and in the process, we find out our friend Andrew Bostom has a new book coming out...

Diana West: Guilt for the ages

It only took PBS one hour to uncover the causes of anti-Semitism, now in an alarming heyday. In "Antisemitism in the 21st Century: The Resurgence," narrated by Judy Woodruff, PBS offered the answer: The reason for Jew-hatred, now widely promulgated among Muslim populations, is, well... Jews! Israel! Even Christianity!

Oh, brother. This wreck of a thesis emerged early in the documentary as fact and fiction collided, mangling cause and effect. According to the show, Jews basically caused anti-Semitism in the Arab-Muslim region around them by first building the tiny modern state of Israel (500 times smaller than that Arab Muslim region), and then actually trying to defend it against a host of Muslim armies and terror groups. As PBS tells it, it isn't the genocidal proclivities of surrounding Muslim nations that have caused war unending on the Jewish state; it's the continued existence of the Jewish state that has caused the genocidal proclivities. The show practically begs a viewer to ask, Well, what else could you expect?...

...The notion that Christians introduced Muslims to anti-Semitism may well be the conventional wisdom -- indeed, it may even be that nonagenarian Lewis is the source of that conventional wisdom -- but just as surely as anti-Semitism historically existed in Christianity, it also historically existed in Islam. And I can actually footnote that statement because, quite by chance, the same week the documentary aired, I happened to read the first chapter of a forthcoming book called "The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism" by Andrew G. Bostom, author of "The Legacy of Jihad."

Bostom examines the origins of anti-Semitism in the Koran (such as in 2:61, which decrees an eternal curse of humiliation and wretchedness on Jews, repeated in 3:112), in the canonical commentaries on the Koran, and in the historical record. And it all begins practically 1,000 years before, say, Queen Victoria made herself an empress. The question is, does anti-Semitism's origin in Islam, whether Christian or Islamic, become a chicken-egg question for scholars, or does it actually matter?

It matters a great deal, and here's why. The conventional wisdom, as expressed on PBS, does two things. It blames Christianity and the West for introducing anti-Semitism to a practically Edenic Islamic world, and it minimizes Islam's non-original sin of partaking of it. Indeed, this same conventional wisdom suggests that anti-Semitism is the natural, if unfortunate, response of "unempowered" Muslims to contemporary political events beyond their control -- namely, the essentially Christian/Western-sponsored establishment of the modern state of Israel.

If we bothered -- if we dared -- to examine anti-Semitism in its historical Islamic context (just as we have examined anti-Semitism in its historical Christian context), we would better understand Islam's hysterical rejection of Israel, which, in Islamic terms, is a state of "dhimmi" inferiors restored to equality, if not economic and military superiority, its very existence a violation of traditional Islamic code...

Ettinger: Prophets of Demographic Doom

On my recent trip to Israel, Yoram Ettinger was one of the most enthusiastic to approach me after my talk and put practice to my advice to take better advantage of the blogosphere. He gave me a hard copy of the report he was a part of writing concerning the demography of populations west of the Jordan River, and how the Arab populations of the West Bank and Gaza have been massively over-estimated. I don't consider myself capable of a serious deconstruction or examination of the findings, but it's all worth having as part of the debate. Here's a short op-ed by Ettinger that sums things up and includes a link to the full report at the end. A snip:

...Israel's "Prophets of Demographic Doom" have accepted, as a Gospel, the numbers and projections published by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), although such data have been refuted annually by the documentation of births, deaths, immigration and eligible voters by the Palestinian Ministries of Health and Education, the Palestinian Election Commission, Israel's Border Police and Jordan's Bureau of Statistics. The "Prophets of Doom" did not scrutinize the data base of the PCBS numbers for Judea & Samaria and Gaza (the 1997 census). They did not know that the PCBS numbers for 1998-2006 constitute significantly-flawed projections and not tangible numbers. They overlooked the inclusion, by the PCBS, of some 400,000 overseas residents, in contrast with global demographic standards, which include only de-facto residents. They ignored the double-count of about 250,000 Jerusalem Arabs and additional 105,000 Israeli ID card carrying Palestinians, who are counted as "Green Line Arabs" as well as "West Bank Arabs". They were unaware that PCBS numbers included a projection of a 300,000 person net-immigration since 1998, while in fact a 100,000 person net-emigration has occurred, with an average annual net-emigration of over 10,000 since 1950. They embraced the PCBS numbers – blindly – in spite of the fact that the PCBS assumed a population growth rate twice as high as Afghanistan, Somalia, Eritrea and Niger, which lead the globe in that category. The "Prophets of Demographic Doom" never mentioned such gross errors in their writings or lectures. Another must-read from Michael J. Totten recounting his travels in Lebanon: The Siege of Ain Ebel. Note how Michael is careful about recounting the facts and portraying the testimonial information he receives, not as the final word, but as something to be heard and measured. Here's a snip:

...“There is a valley just below Ain Ebel,” Alan said. “I will take you there later. Until the army came after the war Hezbollah closed it. It was a restricted military area. They built bunkers there, and stored Katyusha rockets and launchers. When the war started they moved the launchers out of the valley and into our village. When the Israelis shot back they hit some of our houses.”...

...“Did anybody who lives here try to get Hezbollah to leave the village?” I said.

“We don’t have any arms,” Jad said. “Hezbollah has arms. But there was this incident that happened. Next to a guy’s place they were firing Katyushas – you know, missiles. They were firing from the house. This guy went out and said Please, do not fire from our home, from in front of our house. My father is very ill and there are some children in the house. They came to him and said Shut up, go in your house, this is none of your business.”...

...He told me that 18 days after the start of the war a large group of civilians decided it was time to leave Ain Ebel and flee to the north. They were no longer willing to stay while Israel fired back at Hezbollah’s rocket launchers. It was too dangerous, and Hezbollah insisted on staying and endangering those who lived there.

So they fled the area in a convoy of civilian vehicles. It was safer, they figured, to travel in a group than alone.

On their way out of the village, Hezbollah fighters stood on the side of the road and opened fire with machine guns on the fleeing civilians.

I was shocked, and I asked Alan to confirm this. Was it really true? Hezbollah opened fire on Lebanese civilians with machine guns? Alan confirmed this was true.

"Why?" I had an idea, but I wanted a local person to say it.

Because, Alan said, Hezbollah wanted to use the civilians of Ain Ebel as “human shields.” I did not use the phrase “human shields.” These were Alan’s own words...

The entire thing is here.

The Boston Globe Still Doesn't Like the 'T' Word

Not much has changed. Thought this anecdote might interest. In its article on the Wheels of Justice controversy, Conflict besets Andover High, the Boston Globe writes:

[X]*, 15, a sophomore whose social studies class Wheels of Justice addressed, said a few of his classmates challenged the speakers and asked about the organization's ties to groups that advocate Palestinian armed struggle.

Actually, I heard from young X's mother that her son certainly didn't say "Palestinian armed struggle," nor would he. He specifically said, "terrorists."

Now wouldn't that have been a lot easier and saved some ink?

*[I've removed the name, since I think the kids shouldn't be involved any more than they need to be or already have in this. -S]

Now Appearing: Joe Carr as the Son of God

Oh...my...God...a letter writer to the Eagle-Tribune compares Wheels of Justice/International Solidarity Movement rapper cum human shield Joe Carr/Smith to...Jesus (second letter). And yet it was we, the audience, feeling crucified:

In attendance at the awe-inspiring Wheels of Justice presentation the evening of Jan. 5 at Andover High School, I watched Joe Carr perform his poem about the murder by Israeli soldiers of the American, Rachel Corrie. It called to mind a young Jesus, brimming with youth, strength and intelligence, teaching integrity, going to dangerous places and speaking truth to the powerful, calling attention to injustice and doing it gracefully enough that he silenced the hecklers in the crowd.

In fact, the referenced segment of Carr's presentation was the only time that the hecklers were silent. Perhaps this is because Joe Carr, in powerfully reciting his poem, brought transparency to the issue...

The sound of silence was brought about by the audience's dropped jaws and nervous and uncomfortable shuffling of feet...certainly not by any sense of awe, I assure you.

First Time: Arab Minister in Israeli Government

Paging Jimmy Carter:

Israeli-Arab Raleb Majadele will take the place of Ophir Pines - who resigned two months ago because he didn't want to sit in the same government as Avigdor Lieberman, who he felt was too anti-Arab.

The appointment of Labor MK Majadele as Minister of Science was decided upon Wednesday evening by Defense Minister Amir Peretz (pictured). As head of the Labor Party, Peretz has the right to choose his party's ministers - though of course Prime Minister Ehud Olmert makes the official appointment. This will probably happen on Sunday.

The decision to appoint an Arab to the Cabinet was received cynically within the political establishment. Ex-Minister Pines, who finds himself upstaged - an Arab is willing to sit with a minister who Pines said was too anti-Arab - said that Peretz is merely trying to win over the Arab sector in the coming Labor Party primaries. "This is a Peretz-Majadele machination that is a new record in cynicism and insult to the voters' intelligence," Pines said...

...Though Majadele is the first Arab to serve in the Israeli government, he is not the first non-Jew to do so. Salah Tarif, of the Druze community, served as a Minister Without Portfolio for ten months in 2001. Tarif resigned because of a criminal investigation against him that led to his conviction on charges of bribing an Interior Ministry official to obtain citizenship for a friend of his from the Palestinian Authority...

Translation of Finnish Op-ed Wishing Hitler Had Had More Success

I've added a translation of the op-ed that resulted in a fine to two Finnish newspapers. See story below. Here's a snip:

Bush could care less, what kind of mental cripple will return from Iraq, if even they come back at all. They're no longer able to live a normal life, ever. This is the kind of Hitler, Europe and the world's leaders are bowing to with brown tongues. Even though Hitler was such a beast, one would have wished that there would have been enough time and gas to complete the final solution in order for the chosen people to be finished once and for all.

This is where lies about Israel and lies about America lead.

Many thanks to Tundra Tabloids for the translation.

Palestinian Media Watch: The first Saddam Hussein Soccer Tournament for youth in the Palestinian Authority

Saddam Hussein, example for youth.

A soccer tournament for Palestinian youth has been named after Saddam Hussein, the official newspaper of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, reported. The Palestinians have fervently supported Iraq and the terror against US soldiers, and in the past have honored Iraqis for killing Americans. A region of the Jenin refugee camp was named after the first suicide terrorist in Iraq who killed four American soldiers, Ali Al-Na’amani. [Al-Quds, April 2, 2003]

The PA routinely names youth sporting events after terrorists, including a soccer tournament the PA named for the Passover eve suicide terrorist who killed 31 Israelis, and summer camps for girls were named after Wafa Idris, the first woman suicide terrorist, and Ayaat al Akhras a 17 year old, the youngest girl suicide terrorist. [Al Hayat Al Jadida, Jan. 21, 2003; Al-Ayyam, July 18, 2003; Al Quds, Aug. 14, 2003]

In addition, Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement announced that a double memorial stone has been erected honoring both Saddam Hussein and Yasser Arafat. The glorification of Saddam as a Shahid [Martyr for Allah] follows years of mutual support between Saddam Hussein and Yasser Arafat.

The following are the new articles:

“The sports department in the youth community center in Tulkarm is organizing the first soccer tournament named after the Shahid [Martyr] and leader, Saddam Hussein.” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, January 10, 2007]

“The Fatah movement in the Deheishe camp south of Bethlehem erected yesterday two memorial stones in the memory of two shahids, Yasser Arafat and Saddam Hussein. This took place during a ceremony of the movement for the commemoration of 42 years to its establishment, with the presence of the delegate of the Fatah movement, Muhammad Al-Laham… Al-Laham:'The erecting of the two memorial stones comes from a positive recognition of the immense sacrifice that the two shahids realized for the sake of their nation. Both went without renouncing their national principles.'”
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, January 8, 2007]

Mass Defections at the Carter Center (Updated)

Fourteen members of the advisory board take a powder.

Meanwhile, Brandeis shows how big it is by having Carter in to do an appearance. Alan Dershowitz has been trying to get in to debate him but that's not going to happen. I say they arrange to have a big birthday cake there for Carter when he walks into the hall, and just as Carter says, "Hey, it's not my birthday," Alan Dershowitz jumps out of the cake. TADAH! Let the debate ensue.

Update: The entire text of the resignation letter and the list of signatories is here.

Update2: Also see: Reform Rabbis Cancel Carter Center Visit

The rabbis of America’s largest synagogue movement have canceled a planned visit to the Atlanta-based Carter Center in response to the publication of former President Jimmy Carter’s controversial new book on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Last month, the Forward has learned, leaders of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, a 1,500-member group representing Reform rabbis, called off a scheduled tour of the Carter Center after the public reaction to Carter’s book, “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,” reached a fevered pitch, and an interdenominational group of rabbis expressed disappointment over a meeting with the former president...

The Other Side of Wheels in Andover

I hate to say "the other side," because the natural reaction is to place Wheels of Justice on one end and The David Project on the other and imagine that "the truth" some lies somewhere around mid-way between, otherwise known as the fallacy of the golden mean. Let's call it then the "response" session that took place last night at Andover High School, as The David Project took the podium after a day of speaking to students in the same classes that were visited last week by Wheels of Justice.

I'd guess that there were about as many people there as previously...say around 250...but no sign of Ron Francis and his divestment cadre, and far fewer students than before, only a handful in fact. One wonders what classes were encouraged to attend the Wheels session that weren't encouraged to attend this one.

The session ran smoothly with no interruptions. The town moderator from Winchester was brought in to run the event and there were police present in the hall, but in the end, none of these extras seemed to be needed. It was a predominantly friendly audience, with a few critics sprinkled throughout (like the gentleman I believe to have been a Unitarian Minister seated behind me who was shuffling papers like he was about to be audited and muttering under his breath all night).

The David Project's approach was to be heavy on sourcing for their assertions, demonstrated that Arab rejection of the Jewish State was responsible for the conflict and treated the evening session as an opportunity to tell parents what they had told the kids (references to "We told the students this...we demonstrated that..."). Lawrence Muscant gave the lion's share of the presentation, with an Israeli lawyer named Oded Hacohen who's wife is a Wexner Fellow at Harvard giving his portion of the talk from his perspective as a native Israeli and someone familiar with the legal system there.

I heard good things about the classroom sessions, as well, with one parent writing:

My son told me that it went very well...Reputable sources were provided for all facts given and kids were encouraged to double-check everything themselves. This in contrast to WoJ, whose speakers claimed they were the only ones who would tell the truth and not to believe other sources!

I enjoyed it, as a) I always enjoy a good speaker, and b) it was nice commiserating with familiar faces before and after the event (some Jewish, some non, some from the area, some who had driven some distance to be there). Reaction overall was highly positive, with one school committee member commenting to me that the contrast between the two groups couldn't have been clearer.

Here's the Eagle-Tribune story.

Edit: By the way, do the teachers get it yet? Guess who the just-announced chairperson of the bargaining committee for contract negotiation is? Ron Francis.

Internal BBC Email: It's All Israel's Fault

Stephen Pollard's moles (the man is connected!) have scored him a memo written by, well, let's let him explain it:

A BBC mole has sent me this briefing for BBC staff from the BBC's Middle East Editor, Jeremy Bowen, on what lies ahead this year.

It’s all too predictable. The "fragmentation" of Palestinian society has, in Mr Bowen’s view, nothing to do with the Palestinians and everything to do with Israel (“the death of hope, caused by a cocktail of Israel's military activities, land expropriation and settlement building – and the financial sanctions imposed on the Hamas led government”). Indeed, Israel is to blame for almost everything. The Palestinians are not responsible for anything; Israel is the culpable party.

He has contempt for every Israeli politician he mentions; Ehud Barak, for instance, is described as having killed "various Palestinians", written as if he did so for the sake of it.

If this is what passes for high-level analysis at the BBC, is it any wonder its reporting is so poisonous?

See Pollard's post for the offending email.

Andover School Committee Meeting Report: Viewpoint Discrimination Edition

Last night was the first Andover School Committee meeting since last week's fiasco with Wheels of Justice, and it was a packed house. I'd guess there were about sixty people in that room with every seat taken and standing space only. The School Committee president quipped that they usually only fill about a row and a half of seats.

Things ran in an orderly fashion, and following the Pledge of Allegiance (too bad Ron Francis wasn't there, he hates that), Principal Anderson was brought up to explain the time line of events. He was looking pretty sheepish.

Kids, today in Tort Law, we're going to learn another offense with which to annoy the planet...that offense is something called "viewpoint discrimination."

I kid you not, that is the tortious offense with which the principal explained the school was threatened, and would, according to multiple legal opinions, been found guilty of, if they refused to allow WoJ in. Now don't blame the messenger. Whatever you think of the way Principal Anderson handled things, one thing I feel pretty confident of is that he, like all of us, had never heard of such an offense before he was being accused of committing it.

Imagine how low we've sunk into the post-modernist mindset where there is no truth and everything is simply a matter of opinion that even educators must not be discriminating when it comes to differing viewpoints. The astounding implications of this point itself could fill an essay. Let's move on.

After Principal Anderson, Superintendent Claudia Bach read a statement that could only be described as an "abject apology" to the community. She said that she found it "absolutely amazing" that they were bringing in a group like this, that she had concerns with their academic qualities and credentials. Bach had been one of the classroom observers the day the WoJ came in, and got the impression that the "group was not qualified," that she recognized that there were factual issues with them and that they were "not worthy of our students' time." She stated that she fully supports a policy change to prevent controversial groups of highly dubious value (my words) from coming in (such a policy change was on the committee's agenda last night).

She also stated that they never bring in a speaker they have not heard before (oops), and that she "truly regrets this whole thing has occurred" and all the genuine pain it has caused -- there is no victor, only deep sorrow in a community that needs healing.

It was all quite a statement and I'm going to work on getting a copy of the statement to post on the record here for other communities to see what kind of poison and trouble this group brings.

Community comment followed and Tony James was very respectful of the special circumstances and allowed time for everyone who wanted to to approach the mic and go over the three minute time allotment.

Several parents and residents spoke and made great points concerning the appropriateness of the group, the hostile environment created by them, the factual basis of their presentation potential safety and privacy issues and a number of other well-formulated points. Most impressive. I'm also going to work on getting some of these statements for the record.

One man, a Sociologist who works at a couple of local colleges, did speak in favor of the Wheels of Justice presentation.

A school teacher, "one of the six" Social Studies teachers who had WoJ in her class rose to explain the situation. Mary Robb explained that she only allowed her Junior and Senior students in her Democracy and Media Literacy class attend the WoJ session, not her younger history students. Those older students were tasked with deconstructing the WoJ message and she felt they did a great job with it. WoJ did not emerge well in the students' minds once they had gone through with the exercise. She (or was it her students?) felt the group represented "media messages at their worst."

When she was originally approached by a colleague about having the group in, she went out and did research on them and found that indeed, "they have a huge bias," and were therefore perfect for discussion in her class. Robb also wanted to make it clear that NOT all the teachers supported a law suit (and presumably, she was one of them).

It sounds like Robb is a responsible teacher who took the lemons presented and made lemonade. On a deeper level, however, by going along with the invitation, she gave ammunition to the aggressive and less responsible teachers like Tom Meyers who then could purport to speak in her name. Further, a group like this takes any tiny "in" to legitimize themselves. What Mary Robb's students discern will be of no concern when WoJ moves on to the next town trumpeting their success in Andover and using their appearance there to make themselves look legitimate to the next school administration who will have that much more difficulty in making the case that they are inappropriate and unqualified to speak in front of a High School audience. That's why getting the aftermath of this incident out here on the record is so important. Ron Francis is already out doing the spin. More on that in a moment.

A few quick notes on the other speakers: One man identified himself as one of the "independent observers" brought in by the League of Women Voters to be present during the day and he said he didn't see anything happening worth all the excitement. He said that the kids didn't seem to have the grounding to be able to ask truly probing questions, but they did probe.

One woman stood to defend Principal Anderson and the job he does. A mother stood to say her daughter was in a class similar to Mary Robb's and her daughter had a similar experience of deconstructing the message and finding nothing much of value (my words, but that's what I took from it).

Another man approached to say he thought the WoJ appearance was a good thing that aroused his kids' curiosity in a part of the world they had no interest in previously. He also said he and his wife were threatened by WoJ opponents. Unfortunately, this points up one of the negatives of last Friday. While I'm agnostic on what behavior was appropriate on the part of Andover parents and residents last Friday, for reasons I stated previously (to restate quickly: the way this group used legal threats to force its way in, then came to be known as a group with dangerous ties collecting information on the kids...when it comes down to parents protecting their children, ACLU and proper decorum be damned, you've created a VERY volatile situation which should easily have been foreseen by all but the most narcissistic asses who saw the forced entry of this group as some sort of sick "victory"), the bad behavior of outsiders is far more difficult to justify. A little noise...OK, but threats should never be occurring. Not everyone who wants to hear WoJ is evil, some are just curious, some may just be naive.

Anyway...a girl who works at the local temple remarked that whatever happens from here should happen behind closed doors amongst adults...leave the kids out of it...

After all this stuff, the committee moved on to the next agenda item, and a lot of people, including me, left.

Between a packed house and some very good presentations by parents, I think it's clear that the powers-that-be in Andover have gotten the message, and, whoever you blame for some of the raucous behavior on Friday night, Wheels of Justice is a group who's presence has left a wave of destruction in its wake.

Ron Francis provides a little insight into his thinking on the Green-Rainbow Party email list. Seems he's trying to follow through on his plans to force Town Meetings in other communities, and get the GRP to be interested in sponsoring ballot questions. Here's Ron:

I wasn't suggesting a ballot question on Palestine although I will consider it below now that it has been raised. [Yeah, right. -S]

What I was doing is showing how the characteristics of a Palestine ballot question allow the GRP to distinguish itself clearly ... and that's because it strikes straight to the core of the Democrats complicity with elites.

But since you mentioned it !,... I will say that doing a foriegn policy issue next to the poverty related issue that I proposed could be acceptable and Palestine would be a good candidate...

...I disagree that Palestine is a divisive issue [Yeah, right.]. It's the Democrats in Somerville and elsewhere who kept saying "Palestine is divisive". What they really meant is that they wanted to shield zionists inside of progressive circles from stinging criticism from the "left" (social justice workers)...

You said "But it is politically divisive and could be a waste of time for a state political party at best, or a disaster at worst. What's the goal here? To show the public that we can stick our finger in the eye of zionism"

The answer to your question is yes.
The goal is to show that the GRP is a party that is anti-racist (anti-zionists) and draw support from that as was done in Somerville...

Is that what Ron was doing this past week? Sticking his finger in the eye of Zionism? He seems to spend a lot of time on doing that. I hope it was worth it, not.

Here's Ron on last Friday. Big success for him (and btw, even the messages among his peers are pure manipulation):

...2) Do people care about Palestine ? They do and they do a lot ! Last Friday night, of all nights, I attended a talk in Andover where I teach and 250 residents attended a talk called by the highschool principal to discuss the issue. 100 zionists, 100 justice workers and about 60 students...

Aaaanyway...today is the "response" event or whatever you like to call it, both in the high school and then again at 7PM this evening. I've no doubt it will be higher quality than what came before.

Update, April 18, 2007:

Here is video and a transcript of Superintendent Bach's apology (in two parts as it goes slightly over VideoEgg's 5 minute limit):

I thought it was important for me to talk to you tonight about my part in this, what people might call "mess," and also my actions going forward from tonight. Peter Anderson gave a very good review of what happened.

I inserted myself at the point when Mr. Anderson first was debating about this group coming and I urged him to postpone the event, which he initially did. I had...was part of those discussions with the lawyers and what it seems to me we were hearing pretty unambiguously that if we denied them coming back, we would probably be losing the case, and so we would be having the group back later, like it or not, and we'd be having them back at great cost to the community. I mention cost as a secondary factor because basically what it seemed to me what the lawyers were saying is you can have them now or you can have them later, and if you have them later it will be more money but you WILL have them back.

My issue with that and a lot of us around the table in those days really did a lot of arguing and debating with the lawyers. Because at this point, whether I had political feelings about the group coming back or not, I would choose tonight to keep those feelings to myself because I think in fact those should not be publicly related. My political views are not to be part of my public life. But I was concerned about quality of the group because I went on the internet and I looked at them and I asked them questions, and in my mind it seemed absolutely amazing that we would be bringing in a group about a topic that could not be more important today by a group we knew very little about when we lived in a world here in New England of some of the finest experts imaginable. So my concern from the beginning in addition to other concerns I had, but my concern was really the academic qualities and credentials to speak about an important issue and to take the time of our students. I will tell you that when I observed this group, I was one of the observers in the classroom, and I knew that in the evening there would be concern, and I heard it expressed that night, that in fact my worst fears came to be true, that the group was not particularly qualified to speak about these issues. Their presentation was poor. They were factually incorrect. They were obviously biased. I think we knew they were going to be but I found them not worthy of our students' time, and I will say that publicly over again.

My actions going forward: There's a policy going before the school committee tonight that I fully support because I think it puts into place some some discussions that I believe were denied to our principal and myself that I think we need to have some authority. When that policy if it's passed is passed, I will work with the principals on procedures to implement that policy so that we can prevent what has happened and brought you here tonight. I will work with the teachers as well because I think that this whole question of what we bring in to our students, the quality, the excellence, the academic excellence which I think is absolutely crucial in the issue. I will work with teachers at the curriculum councils as well as at the high school and other schools to have people really be very very scrutinizing and diligent about what we bring. When we bring speakers, when Marcia O'Neil and I bring speakers before the teachers, we don't bring a speaker in we haven't first heard and that we don't have a lot of information about. And I think we learn from this criteria. I will also work with the educators on internet literacy because I think just looking up on the internet a website and googling somebody is not good enough. We have to do much more than that. I won't hesitate to take any action when people say, "Well, have you done anything?" If complaints are brought forward to me, I will and will continue to do so in this case and all cases to investigate thoroughly. You will not know about those investigations because you can't know. But I will be as I always have and I have a reputation for following through with that. So you need to know I will do it.

Finally, I want to offer my apology, and I truly regret that this whole thing has occurred that has caused so much pain in this room...and it's been genuine pain.

Issues like this deserve serious debate and I hope that in fact what we can do is move forward with serious debate on these issues. I would hate in the future to imagine that the schoolhouse could not be a place for discussions such as was the intention, because the schoolhouse, as somebody said to me the other day, is expected to address these issues, address issues that society hasn't figured out yet and so we always will have the obligation and should bringing those forward. But we have to do it in the right way. For some to see what has happened as a victory in this and not see the pain is incomprehensible to me. If the objective was to enlighten and to bring further understanding to Andover of this enormously important issue - then that failed. So there has been no victory, only deep sorrow in a community that needs healing and I hope you will join with me to do that, because we need to move forward. We need to be healed. And we need to continue to bring educational excellence to our students.

Here are the notes from one of the citizen/parents who addressed the School Committee. Their actual statements may have varied slightly from what their notes say here. There were others who addressed the committee, but this is the talk I have in the most usable form:

We are concerned residents of Andover, parents that cross all religions and races that are here to insist that the school committee take three actions immediately. Our discussion tonight will be to support these three actions – they are as follows:
  • Adopt a Zero Tolerance policy against any form of hate speech or environment that creates a hostile or tense atmosphere in the Andover Schools
  • Work directly with the Teachers’ Union to adopt a policy that prevents teachers or administrators from using school property, time or resources for the purpose of extending their religious, political or social ideologies unless it is in direct correlation with their department curriculum and approved by the Office of the Superintendent.
  • Full accountability of school administrators, including and especially the Superintendent of Schools and High School Principal who have both shown an inability to exercise good judgment as it relates to protecting our kids

My name is XXXX and I moved to Andover 1 ½ years ago with my wife and two school age children. Our primary reason for moving to the town was to have our children in a top ranked school system. I can assure you that if I had seen the article in yesterday’s Boston Globe “Conflict Besets Andover High”, we would NOT have moved to Andover.

Today I am embarrassed of the decisions made at the high school and deeply disappointed in the school administration for putting our children in danger by allowing Wheels of Justice to speak, virtually unrestrained, last Friday at the High School.

There is no way that Dr. Bach and Mr. Anderson can deny that they created a safety risk by allowing the following:

  1. Creating a hostile and tense environment for the students of Andover High ( these are the students’ and teachers’ words, not mine )
  2. “ Negligent Infliction of Emotional Distress “ caused by, as an example, the photos and discourse that caused at least one student to leave Friday’s assembly in tears.
  3. Showing pictures that with their depiction of violence would likely earn at least an “ R “ rating as a parental advisory to children under the age of 17
  4. Allowing children as young as the age of 14 to be in the library and within earshot of the speakers, with no access to any alternative view
  5. Petition intimidation by the teachers and fellow students, who by their own admission, did not realize what they were signing and in some cases felt pressured by their peers to sign
  6. A video created at the Friday night session, that includes the students and can be accessed and viewed with little or no restriction
  7. One of the most shocking safety risks was created by Dr. Bach and Peter Anderson in allowing WOJ to obtain from the students a list of personal information including eMail addresses. It is important to note that Joe Carr -A/K/A Joe Smith- one of the invited speakers, is directly affiliated with a group called “ ISM “ or International Solidarity Movement. This group is profoundly violent and Pro-PLO, and actively recruits students and puts them in situations where they are killed or injured. It is also important to note that Joe Carr is actively followed by Homeland Security and his visit to your High School was paid for by discretionary funds including his plane ticket- approved by Tom Meyers the president of the teacher’s union and Peter Anderson your principal. No attempt was made to stop this list from being created and a copy was retrieved from the possession of Tom Meyers at his home – why would Tom Meyers have this list and what copies were made ???

It would be easy for the administration to say they did not know they were creating a hostile, tense or unsafe environment, but then we would demand they answer why they realized they needed to have an Andover Police Officer in the school starting at 6 AM on Friday. How many other invited speakers to our High School require an armed police presence ?

This is, above all, a management issue. This is not a situation where the administration and the board can simply put in new rules and say “ problem solved “. Life does not work that way and we all have to be held accountable for our actions – it is a lesson that we owe to our children.

We live in an age where students walk into high schools and kill and maim their fellow students for little recognizable or known reasons and our administrators have seen fit to put a match to gasoline and potentially ignite a flame that would make yesterday’s Globe Headline look like good news.

Jacoby: The Boston mosque's Saudi connection (Updated)

Must read Jeff Jacoby today on the funding roots of the Islamic Society of Boston's stalled Boston Mosque: The Boston mosque's Saudi connection. Here's the meat:

...After Sept. 11, it became clear that mosques dominated by radical clerics were a potentially lethal threat. Many such mosques are funded by Saudi Arabia, which spends heavily to propagate Wahhabism, a fanatic and aggressive strain of Islam. The Saudi government, reported the 9/11 Commission, "uses zakat" -- Islamic charity -- "and government funds to spread Wahhabi beliefs throughout the world, including in mosques and schools. . . . Some Wahhabi-funded organizations have been exploited by extremists to further their goal of violent jihad against non-Muslims." Its findings were reinforced by Freedom House, which in 2005 documented the penetration of US mosques by Saudi-supplied Wahhabi hate literature.

It is against this background that the $24 million mosque and cultural center being built by the Islamic Society of Boston has generated such controversy.

Questions have been raised about the Islamic Society's past and present leaders, some of whom have supported Islamist terrorism or indulged in virulently anti-American and anti-Semitic rhetoric. There are concerns about the sweetheart deal in which the land for the mosque was acquired from the City of Boston for a fraction of its value. Especially disturbing has been the Islamic Society's response to its diverse critics: a lawsuit accusing them of anti-Muslim conspiracy and libel.

That libel, the lawsuit charges, included claims that the "ISB receives funds from Wahhabis and/or Muslim Brotherhood and/or other Saudi/Middle Eastern sources" and that "the ISB Project was supported financially by donors from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states 'with known connections to radical Islamists.' " Given the Saudi role in disseminating jihadist fanaticism, it might indeed be defamatory to falsely accuse the ISB of financial ties to Saudi Arabia.

But such ties are quite real.

According to financial documents supplied to The Boston Globe, major funding for the mosque is being provided by the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In December 2005, two payments of approximately $250,000 each were wired from Jeddah to the Citizens Bank account of the mosque's general contractor in Boston. Messages confirming the payments were faxed from Jeddah to the Islamic Society of Boston on Dec. 19; these refer to the payments as "USA-52" and "USA-53." Other documents suggest that subsequent payments have been made as well.

The Islamic Development Bank is a subsidiary of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, and each of the conference's 56 member nations are shareholders. But the largest shares are owned by Saudi Arabia, Libya, and Iran, which together control 48 percent of the bank's stock. Saudi Arabia, Libya, and Iran are also three of the world's foremost sponsors or incubators of terrorism. It is perhaps not surprising that the Islamic Development Bank, through its Al-Quds and Al-Aqsa funds, has become a leading funder of Palestinian suicide bombing, paying large financial subsidies to the families of terrorists.

The Islamic Society of Boston didn't return my calls, but its website notes that all donors are cross-checked against the government's terrorist watch list, and that funding is accepted only "with no strings attached." It notes too that it "rejects any interpretation of Islam that is considered fundamentalist, oppressive, radical, anti-Western, or anti-Semitic."

But questions remain. More questions will come. Suing the good people who ask them won't make the questions go away. Answering them candidly, on the other hand, just might.

Also, here is the hard news story in the paper by Charles Radin: Saudi bank's role in mosque is questioned

The Islamic Society of Boston's effort to build the region's largest mosque has received at least $1 million in financing from a Saudi Arabia-based bank dominated by governments that critics of the mosque project say support Islamic extremism.

The Islamic society acknowledged yesterday receiving a $1 million loan from the Islamic Development Bank in late 2005 -- principal owners of which are Saudi Arabia, Libya, Iran, and Egypt -- after opponents of the mosque project provided the Globe with documents showing that the bank paid about $500,000 in mosque construction bills late in 2005.

Work on the mosque, which is being built at Roxbury Crossing, ground to a halt last autumn due to lack of funds. But work restarted this week using the unexpended portion of the loan, $1 million in donations raised locally during last year's Ramadan holiday, and $1,352,500 from the sale of Islamic society property in Cambridge, society spokeswoman Jessica Masse said.

Backers of the mosque say the bank is a legitimate financial institution that supports important projects in the Islamic world.

The 56 members of the Organization of Islamic Conference contribute in varying degrees to the Islamic Development Bank, which uses their money to finance a broad range of agricultural, industrial, and infrastructure projects in the Islamic world. But Saudi Arabia, Libya, Iran, and Egypt provide a majority of the funds. The bank also supervises and disburses money from special funds created to support Palestinian families, including the families of suicide bombers. Saudi Arabia is a major contributor to those special funds...

...The mosque project was originally budgeted at about $20 million. During early fund-raising efforts, according to the Islamic society, all donations came from individuals: about 40 percent from Massachusetts donors, 30 percent from Saudis, 12 percent from other Middle Easterners and 15 percent from Western Europeans.

Donations from these sources dried up, Islamic society officials say, because of what they allege was a conspiracy involving the Boston Herald, WFXT-TV (Channel 25), and individual activists, most of them Jewish, to block the project by accusing the society's leaders of terrorist associations. The alleged conspirators are now defendants in a defamation suit brought by the Islamic society...

Update: Miss Kelly comments on these developments, here: KSA Funding of the ISB Mosque

And say, come to think of it...since there's no interest on Islamic loans...don't they take equity instead? So does that make Saudi Arabia a part owner in this mosque? (A non-rhetorical question.) Is Sudan, a country where people own black slaves, a part owner in a mosque in Roxbury?

It's the Mythologies, Stupid

Dennis Ross gets to the heart of the matter, while taking Jimmy Carter to task for his misuse of maps and his faux-history: Don't Play With Maps

... It is certainly legitimate to debate whether President Clinton’s proposal could have settled the conflict. It is not legitimate, however, to rewrite history and misrepresent what the Clinton ideas were.

Indeed, since the talks fell apart, there has emerged a mythology that seeks to defend Mr. Arafat’s rejection of the Clinton ideas by suggesting they weren’t real or they were too vague or that Palestinians would have received far less than what had been advertised. Mr. Arafat himself tried to defend his rejection of the Clinton proposals by later saying he was not offered even 90 percent of the West Bank or any of East Jerusalem. But that was myth, not reality.

Why is it important to set the record straight? Nothing has done more to perpetuate the conflict between Arabs and Israelis than the mythologies on each side. The mythologies about who is responsible for the conflict (and about its core issues) have taken on a life of their own. They shape perception. They allow each side to blame the other while avoiding the need to face up to its own mistakes. So long as myths are perpetuated, no one will have to face reality.

And yet peace can never be built on these myths. Instead it can come only once the two sides accept and adjust to reality. Perpetuating a myth about what was offered to justify the Arafat rejection serves neither Palestinian interests nor the cause of peace...

Also, Boker Tov, Boulder has a nice round-up of Carter links: Carter Unlimited, including a link to this article by Alan Dershowitz, first in a series of six detailing Carter's ties to Arab money: Ex-President for Sale.

Totten: "So This Is Our Victory"

Michael J. Totten has another update in his excellent series on Lebanon, this time reporting on his trip to the south: “So This Is Our Victory”. A few snips:

BINT JBAIL, SOUTH LEBANON – I drove to Hezbollah’s stronghold in South Lebanon to survey the devastation from the war in July, to check in on the United Nations peacekeeping force, and to talk to civilians who were used as human shields in the battle with Israel. My American journalist friend Noah Pollak from Azure Magazine in Jerusalem went with me. We went under the escort of two professional enemies of Hezbollah who work for the Lebanese Committee for UNSCR 1559, an NGO which closely advises the Lebanese government and the international community on the disarmament of illegal militias in Lebanon...

...“What do you think about Israel in general?” I said. “Aside from the war in July?”

“I have nothing against Israel,” Henry said. “They are good people and they do good for themselves. We need to make peace with everyone. They are open-minded people, but we have no way to communicate with them since the Syrians came.”

“I would love to visit the Holy Land,” Said said. “My mother went there when the border was open before 2000. It is a good place. If you want to make peace with people, you can make peace, especially with the Israelis. They just want to live in their country, so it is no problem.”...

..."Can we get out and talk to people around here?”

“I do not recommend it,” Said said. “They cannot talk freely. These watchers will come up to us if we get out of the car, and they will make sure anyone who talks to us only tells us what they are supposed to say.”...

The whole thing, with photos.

Finnish Court Fines Newspapers that Published Op-Ed Praising Hitler

Tundra Tabloids reports:

...Using the ME conflict as a back drop to wish that Hitler had been more successful, Usko Takkumäki had his op-ed published by the two papers, and if I am correct, the same individual is a labor union representative and a communist, which makes it all the more ironic, seeing that he joins himself at the hip with fascist Hitler in defending the the genocide of the Jews...

...Porvoo District Court fines newspaper reps. in racism trial. Both the Uusimaa and Leftist paper Kansan Uutiset (The Peoples Paper) received fines for publishing the racist op-ed.

"The writer, who had defended the Nazi holocaust in the letter, was also fined for incitement against an ethnic group. The prosecutor in the case said that the article constituted veiled incitement in favour of violence against an ethnic group. The writer had submitted the letter to a number of newspapers. It was published in the two newspapers last summer." More here...

Here at home I'm not generally for special fines for hate speech and the like, but I hold out that in Europe special factors may apply.

Update: Here is a translation of the offending piece:

"God's People, Bush's hand picked"

With both the Yankee's help and blessing, God's chosen people have begun a new round of murder and destruction. I had wrote here a year or so ago about similar acts by the chosen people. They are surely a badly chosen people, killing all kinds of innocent civilians while claiming the right to self defense.

This wouldn't be possible without the Yankee's support through money and weapons. It's not enough for Bush that a hundred people a day are being killed in Iraq with the majority being innocent civilian victims. All of what's happening in Israel and in Iraq is with Bush's permission, as long as he keeps the oil billions tightly sewed in the ass of his pant's pocket. It is very clear to all here, that Israel's murder and destruction operation is meant to turn the world's attention away from the murdering of his own in Iraq.

Israelis have never been ready to give the Palestinians any kind of livelihood or right to self determination. Forgetting the support itself has received from other nations. The world bows only to the world policeman, Bush, and to the owners of the world's mammon. Europe's great leaders bow while the whirlpool of insane crude oil prices create even worse trouble ahead. What in the hell is the UN or the EU for?

Many thanks to Tundra Tabloids for the translation.

Wes Clarke: [Pressure coming from] New York money people

From an interview with the former candidate at The Huffington Post. Rosner's Blog at Haaretz analyzes:

...Clark is talking about the possibility of military action against Iran:

"How can you talk about bombing a country when you won't even talk to them?" said Clark. "It's outrageous. We're the United States of America; we don't do that. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the military option is off the table - but diplomacy is not what Jim Baker says it is. It's not, 'what will it take for you boys to support us on Iraq?' It's sitting down for a couple of days and talking about our families and our hopes, and building relationships."

When we asked him what made him so sure the Bush administration was headed in this direction, he replied: "You just have to read what's in the Israeli press. The Jewish community is divided, but there is so much pressure being channeled from the New York money people to the office seekers."

4. Gee, what can he possibly mean by "pressure being channeled from the New York money people"?

5. Two aspects of these ramblings I find worthy of comment. First: how and why has it become so easy to speak in this about the Jews? Second: What does it mean politically?...

More.

MEMRITV: The Arab World With or Without an Israel

Charles notes this clip from MEMRI and entitles it: Sunni-Shi'ite War in Microcosm. I say it's the entire Arab World in microcosm, and demonstrates the emptyness of claims that without an Israel, or an "occupaaation," peace would be breaking out all over. Watch at the link:

Sadeq Al-Musawi: You are a thief... You are a thief. You've been convicted for theft..

Mish'an Al-Jabouri : Get out. Saddam Hussein is your master and the master of your parents...

Arafat Rubbed My Leg Under the Table: McAuliffe

A New York Times review of former Democratic Party chairman Terry McAuliffe's memoir discloses this morsel:

...There are any number of humorous anecdotes sprinkled among the chest-deep pile of dropped names in the 406-page volume, including Yasir Arafat’s repeatedly rubbing Mr. McAuliffe’s leg under the table at a dinner in Washington in 2000...

I ain't laughing. There have, of course, long been rumors of Arafat's homosexuality and the fact that what he actually died of was AIDS (hence the super-secret treatment of his medical records) -- all the more ironic given the treatment of Homosexuals in Palestinian society and Islam generally. Alcibiades points this out and includes an example link at Kesher Talk, here.

Columbia's Nadia Abu El-Haj: Another Review of Facts on the Ground

Jonathan Burack, writing at Family Security Matters, is the latest academic to contribute a scathing review of Nadia Abu El-Haj's (click the link for a search of all related entries) book, Facts on the Ground: Archaeological Practice and Territorial Self-Fashioning in Israeli Society: Erasing History and Ourselves: Nadia Abu El-Haj, Israel and the Western Tradition. Here are some extensive quotes, but the whole thing is worth clicking through to and reading if the issue interests.

FSM has long argued in these pages for both academic balance in our colleges and for Americans to resist the fifth column that operates in our country. Enter Nadia Abu El-Haj, the Barnard assistant professor of anthropology who has, in her 2001 book, ignored many facts and instead accused Israeli archaeology of inventing the Jews’ right to Israel. This woman is up for tenure at Barnard, and if you do not like the idea of granting such an honor to America’s and her allies’ enemies, then contact Barnard now.

The Hebrew Bible is a fairy tale. Ancient Israel is a fiction. All the shards of pottery, the houses, the stone walls, terraces, grain storage silos and tombs in the hill country, forget about them. None of them speak, and none can be clearly linked to the Jewish people. Moreover, the Jews of modern-day Israel have no genetic or other real connection to the land they have illegitimately occupied in the modern age.

Or so Nadia Abu El-Haj would have you suspect. In her 2001 book, "Facts on the Ground: Archaeological Practice and Territorial Self-Fashioning in Israeli Society," published by the University of Chicago Press, the Barnard assistant professor of anthropology accused Israeli archaeology of making it all up simply to justify the existence of the Jewish state.

Five years later, this book is back in the news. That’s because El-Haj is up for tenure, and a number of Barnard alumnae are not pleased...

...El-Haj is not a practicing archaeologist. She hardly knows the Hebrew in which many Israeli archaeological debates are conducted. She has taken part in very few actual digs. Yet she confidently condemns Israeli archaeology as a tool of the Zionists. With only gossip to go on, she accuses one archaeologist of bulldozing non-Jewish strata to get to the levels that might offer details about ancient Israel. Bizarrely, she then concludes her book by reversing herself on such desecration, asking us to "understand" sympathetically the Palestinian mob that destroyed Joseph’s Tomb on October 8, 2000. I guess it all depends on whose narrative is being bulldozed...

...Lately, she has also embarked on genetic ancestry testing among Israel’s Jews in order to explore "race, diaspora and kinship." Will she seek to prove that Israelis today have no genetic link to the ancient Israelites and therefore no claim to their Jewish homeland?

If this is her intent, I have a personal reaction. My forebears came to America in the 1890s from Latvia and Poland. The Declaration of Independence, however, was written by upper crust WASPS. Nevertheless, it is still every bit as much a part of my proud identity and heritage as anyone else’s. So also are the lands of Israel and the Hebrew Bible. For hoping to erase the Jewish historical presence in Israel, for embracing a genetic concept of Jewish identity, and for further turning Palestinian and Jew against one another, Nadia Abu El-Haj’s book is a pure polemic. If Barnard grants her tenure, it will be rewarding a polemic, not scholarship.

The whole piece.

British Airways and your luggage...they don't mix (2 Updates)

Last month I took British Airways to that media conference in Herzliyah. It appears I was lucky to have no trouble with my luggage. In fact, Stephanie Gutmann's baggage was lost, and I'm not sure if she ever got it back. A reader sends in this link showing it's been a rather large problem: BA luggage farce deepens as bags are sent to Italy

The British Airways lost luggage farce deepened last night when it emerged that the airline is sending thousands of bags out of Heathrow to be sorted through in Milan, only for them then to be sent back to England.

Heaps of the baggage are being sent to cheap sub-contractors in Italy to be sorted - and some of the luggage despatched there is then being sent on to its owners' destinations after the passengers have finished their trips and returned home.

BA also admitted the true scale of the baggage shambles last night, saying that an astonishing 28,000 customers had lost luggage over the last three weeks. The crisis began when a baggage belt broke at Heathrow in mid-December, was compounded by fog problems, and another baggage belt broke on December 29.

And the arline was forced into an embarrassing climbdown yesterday after the Daily Mail revealed BA was profiting from every call made to its baggage helpline, with some customers holding for ten hours and paying 3p a minute for the privilege. The company belatedly introduced a free phone number yesterday afternoon...

Update: Stephanie emails:

...I am so happy to have the BA operation called a "shambles." Yes, I did get my suitcase back last Sunday--seventeen days, but it looked like it had seen some very hard traveling. It was really dirty, ripped in one place, and bizarrely repacked (maybe it was subjected to an extra security check). Stuff that had been safely inside the bag (a bunch of my nice, dress-up clothes) were damp, balled up and stuffed into an outside pocket. One white silk shirt actually has black boot prints on it which a dry cleaner has not been able to take out. The other clothes were resuscitated by the dry cleaning. But their customer service is the absolute worst. I got the best customer service in Israel where people at Ben Gurion answered the phones and were nice and as informative as they could be, but when I got back to the US I was never able to speak to a human being. BA had these phone-trees-to-nowhere they would put you on, or 800 numbers that were always busy or just endlessly played music. One time, at about day sixteen, after the new year when things must have been calming down, I waited listening to Muzak for 45 minutes and then got a human being. He said he couldn't tell me anything and didn't know anything about baggage because he was in reservations. He said throughout the holiday baggage calls were routed to reservations so if I tried again the same thing would happen.

So I've sent in a claim for the silk shirt, the dry cleaning and the calls I made from the Daniel Hotel. I think it's probably wise to try to avoid flights that connect in Heathrow. I did a lot of reading about it over the holidays and it seems it's kind of straining at the seams with overcrowding--too many flights coming through...

Update 2: Tom Glennon emails:

...I spent 26 years with a major American oil company, about seven of which were in various auditing positions. I can attest to the accuracy of this, as I heard it directly from the person involved.

One of our engineers had been assigned to an offshore facility in Egyptian waters, near Saudi Arabia. Because of hostilities during the Yom Kippur War, all of our personnel were ordered to vacate the drilling facilities, and leave the area. He was among the last to leave, as his team was in charge of shutting the rigs down. He was booked on a British Airways (then known as BOAC) flight back to London, and from there, an American carrier back to the U.S. He was very surprised to find that he was the only passenger on a 747 from Riyadh to Cairo to Heathrow. This was due primarily to the Yom Kippur War, as passenger traffic was restricted.

A flight crew of 5 or 6, and a total of twelve cabin attendants gave him what he described as the most personal service he had ever received an any flight. He said he felt like royalty, and was almost disappointed when he arrived in England, and went back to being treated like any other commoner. This feeling was was reinforced when he was informed at Heathrow that his luggage had been 'mishandled', and could not be located. He told me that it took three additional days for his bags to catch up to him in New York. We could never figure out how the luggage could be lost, as he was the only passenger, and his were the only bags in luggage compartment...

Athlete stripped of Bahraini citizenship for competing in Israeli marathon

Ah, the Arab World...building bridges to peace one ostracized athlete after another:

Authorities have revoked the Bahraini citizenship of a Kenyan-born athlete who ran in an Israeli marathon, the nation's athletic union said Saturday.

Bahraini runner Mushir Salem Jawher competed and won the Tiberias Marathon in Israel on Thursday, ending the race in just over 2 hours and 13 minutes.

Most Arab states do not recognize Israel, and the Jerusalem Post newspaper said Jawher was the first athlete from an Arab country to compete in an Israeli marathon. Jawher was born in Kenya in 1978 and moved to Bahrain in 2003, according to the International Association of Athletics Federation.

The Jerusalem Post cited Jawher as saying he was "very proud" to have run in Israel. Even though Bahrain has no official ties with the Jewish state, "It is a free country," the athlete was quoted as saying.

Bahrain's Athletic Union said in a statement Saturday that it had received the news that a Bahraini national competed in Israel with "shock and regret."

"The union deeply regrets what the athlete has done," the statement said. A comity of sport and government authorities decided to strike Jawher's name off the sport union records and strip off his Bahraini nationality, the statement said...

I say let the guy stay. Say, since Bahrain cares so much for the Palestinian Arabs, I'd be curious to know how many of them Bahrain has resettled and granted citizenship to. I'm sure they've got the space.

Another Qumsiyeh Lie

Last night, Mazin Qumsiyeh feigned shock at the reception he had received in Andover. In today's Lawrence Eagle-Tribune he's quoted as saying:

..."We've spoken to 200 high schools in the United States," said Mazin Qumsiyeh, as shouts echoed throughout the room. "We've spoken to a school in New York that was 80 percent Jewish, and had no problems. I really don't understand."...

It belies common sense to imagine this is the first time Qumsiyeh and friends have found themselves greeted with less than open arms in all their travels...and of course, the record shows it's not.

In fact, Qumsiyeh found himself disinvited from the "elite" Fieldston school in New York early last year, in an episode with echoes of Andover's recent experience: Fieldston Follies

First came a eupeptic letter from a principal of Fieldston School. It began:
Dear Upper School Parents,

I am writing to let you know about an assembly we have planned for Thursday, February 23rd. We have invited Professor Muhammed Muslih of Long Island University and Associate Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh of Yale to speak to the Upper School students and faculty about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Both Professor Muslih and Associate Professor Qumsiyeh are Palestinians. Professor Muslih will speak for 10 minutes in favor of a two-state solution, and Professor Qumsiyeh will speak for 10 minutes in favor of a one-state solution, and for the balance of the assembly they will entertain questions from the audience.

Several days later another letter followed. It read:

Dear Upper School Parents:

I am writing to inform you that we have decided not to go forward with the February 23rd assembly on the Israeli-Palestine question. As important as we all believe this issue is and as much as we hoped for from the assembly and the accompanying activities, the events of the last several days have persuaded me that the assembly forum we chose to launch this discussion was not appropriate given the sensitivity and complexity of the issue.

I appreciate the many thoughtful phone calls and e-mails I received in response to my recent letter. Many of you who were most concerned about our plan framed your concerns in the most positive and constructive terms, and I deeply regret the unhappiness that my letter and support for this project has caused you.

Sincerely,
John Love
Upper School Principal

What caused Fieldston to reverse engines so dramatically? “Their complacency got punctured,” says a Fieldston parent. “This is a school that distributed condoms to 15-year-olds without much protest from parents, and had a Transgender Day with no ruckus at all. So they must have thought they could get by with Dr. Qumsiyeh. Wrong.”

Very wrong, in fact. Not long after the announcement reached the upper school parents, Love began to receive phone calls and e-mails protesting Fieldston’s decision. A letter from Jerome Gordon, a retired banker and Jewish activist, was one of the most acute. He noted that Qumsiyeh, a geneticist, hadn’t been at Yale for more than a year—and that he wasn’t a professor when he was there. The doctor was, however, very active as a Palestinian extremist with a gift for invective. Indeed, one of his articles, distributed at the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland, wound up getting withdrawn following protests about his arguments for divestment from companies doing business with Israel...

Read on.

There's also a NY Times article on the incident, here.

The difference? A responsive and responsible school administration and fewer arrogant, out of control teachers threatening lawsuits.

It didn't take me long to find this on the record incident, the Eagle-Tribune (which has generally covered and editorialized on this issue well) could have done the same.

I seem to recall another incident that involved an actual protest at a private school in New York, but I'm not sure Qumsiyeh and company were involved in that one and I don't recall enough details to check. Anyone remember?

Update: A reader comes through. The school I was remembering was, indeed the Fieldston school. I may have been premature in calling the school administration "responsive and responsible," since after canceling Qumsiyeh, they ended up with a seminar that featured Tony Judt and Rashid Khalidi on the final panel of the day and resulted in open protests (Qumsiyeh was out of the picture by that point). Here are several posts on the subject at Israpundit.

It's Hot in Andover Tonight! (4 Updates)

I mean literally...it's like 65 degrees out on a January 5th evening. What's up with that?

But I also mean that figuratively, of course. Wheels of Justice made its much ballyhooed public appearance at Andover High School this evening, and it became every bit A Night To Remember. The reception on the part of the Andover community was...what's the term...less than friendly. This was probably the most rancorous public event I've been to.

Let me skip quickly to the end, then work the rest as a flash-back. The evening ended prematurely after several warnings from Principal Anderson to an often unruly audience during the question and answer session following a question by a school committee member to the WoJ concerning the troubling disclosure that WoJ was collecting emails and phone numbers of the kids during the day. Apparently, it was bad enough Andover was forced to host this group, the idea that they were going to be targeting the kids later was over the line, and this committee member asked for that list of names, emails and phone numbers be returned.

This led to a puzzled and evasive response (does he have any other kind?) from Mazin Qumsiyeh who started noting that they'd never received such a hostile and aggressive reception in any venue they've appeared in, leading to calls of "Answer the Question!" from the audience, and one parent stepping forward, clearly upset, pointing his finger and demanding the list and screaming that "Parents have a right to protect their children!" That was about it for Principal Anderson, and he called the event to an end. Here's audio. My apologies for the quality, it gets better when the shouting starts, and I may also have some video later.

Let me try to answer Qumsiyeh's question, because I think it's germane to understanding the whole episode (which I'll get to, promise). Why is there so much anger? Here are a couple of suggestions. If you have to threaten a lawsuit in order to get in to speak to people's children, it should be an indicator that you are not wanted, and maybe, just maybe, you should have some sense, or some class, or even enough self-interest to understand that maybe you should at that point back off on your own and say, "OK, maybe now's not the time." But if you force yourself in anyway, don't expect a thank you and an invitation to tea and cookies. Hey, maybe you're just misunderstood. So step back, try to engage the concerned folks and explain yourself...maybe it will work, maybe it won't...but threatened lawsuits and kicking down the door to where you're not welcome are not how you win friends and influence people.

Mazin Qumsiyeh needs to step back and ask himself, "Why do they hate us?"

Now, let's step back to the beginning. I arrived quite early and milled around with some familiar faces who had also come, some to distribute literature and hold signs. We were approached by an Andover Police Officer who informed us that no protesting would be allowed on school property (the school itself is far in from the street) and that if we distributed literature or were even caught "commenting" to people as they entered, we would be arrested. When told that the principal had said it was OK, he said, "This comes straight from the school committee."

Not long after, Ron Francis showed up carrying one of his giant Israel Apartheid posters and walked into the building, and the cop said that if we went inside we could do whatever we wanted. Everyone went inside.

It was standing room only in the school library. I'd hazard that there were about 150-200 people there. I'm also going to guess that about 10-20% of them were Ron's Somerville Divestment Project people and associates and friendly to WoJ (I welcome other estimates on both these numbers). There were many familiar faces, but, disappointingly for those who were wondering, no David Rolde. Perhaps his kaffiyeh was in the wash.

Qumsiyeh was first up, and his presentation began to be frequently interrupted by calls of "LIE" and people shouting out questions and related facts. This all led to Principal Anderson stepping in and threatening to end the evening, or have people removed, but after one of the community members who had led the anti-WoJ fight stepped in and asked the crowd to please remain calm, there were only infrequent interruptions after that. (Just the occasional hiss or shout of "lie"...you should have heard the reaction when he put Jimmy Carter's face up on the screen. Qumsiyeh looked genuinely shocked. Ha!) qumsiyeh.jpg

As far as the substance of Qumsiyeh's talk went...there wasn't any. I was honestly surprised. With any good lie, you start with a grain of truth, and just add a twist. But in Qumsiyeh's PowerPoint presentation, there wasn't one paragraph or image that wasn't in some way either a manipulation, a quarter-truth or an outright lie. It was shockingly dishonest.

He started by explaining that the American media is censored and slanted to the Zionist, pro-Israel viewpoint, and that we never get the story that others in the rest of the world get (Solomonia readers are knowledgeable about the story the rest of the world gets to be thankful for this). Of course Qumsiyeh talked about the security fence and how the Palestinians are being starved out. He mentioned the Road Map to Peace and what a fake it was by noting that there were four words that were never mentioned in it -- "Human Rights" and "International Law."

Yet here are two words Mazin Qumsiyeh never once mentioned: Suicide and Bombing.

He talked about the fence without mentioning it, he talked about Qalqilya without mentioned it, he talked about Bethlehem without mentioning it, he talked about Jerusalem without mentioning it, he talked about olive trees without mentioning it. (He also showed a photo of olive trees that were more likely being transplanted than destroyed -- root-balls and trunks intact.)

[Edit: A reader emails to point out these two relevant photos: The first shows the aftermath of a suicide bombing at a Qalqilya checkpoint. Fortunately, he blew himself up at the checkpoint (GRAPHIC PICTURE WARNING), rather than in the town a mere five minute walk away in the background of this photo.]

He talked about Israeli-only roads without mentioning the frequent shooting incidents that led to them. He talked about spot check-points without mentioning terrorism or the tips the IDF gets that lead to them.

He showed a picture Arab refugees loading into boats during the time of Israel's War of Independence and said that the Palestinians were literally driven into the sea, without mentioning that this is the expression that has literally been used by Israel's enemies and that these people were refugees of a war they started -- a sad factor in every war and nothing particular to the Arab-Israeli conflict or Israel's creation. He didn't mention that it was Azzam Pasha who declared that "This will be a war of extermination and a momentous massacre which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacres and the Crusades" and that it was the Palestinian leader Haj Amin al-Husseini who was literally a Nazi and called upon Hitler to come to Palestine to finish the job when he was done in Europe...one could go on and on with what was left out...the context, the relevant context.

Oh, and here's another word Qumsiyeh didn't mention: Hamas or Hamas Charter.

He talked for probably twenty minutes and when I tell you that there was not a phrase that had any degree of explanatory value with regard to either history or current affairs, believe it. I'd give credit if there was any to give. There was none. Pure, unadulterated brain rot.

Next up was Hassan Fouda. He was another soft-spoken, mild-looking guy. But there was a real problem here. I swear I'm not saying this as a childish taunt (not that I'm above that kind of thing)...but he had a very strong accent and I don't think I understood but about half of what the heck he was on about, and I'm usually good about that kind of thing. fouda.jpg

I think a lot of people in the audience were nodding off at this point.

His presentation seemed to focus on a series of personal stories...people who had been shot by evil Israelis but still forgave them, people who had been run over by evil Israelis but still forgave them, people who had family members mutilated by evil Israelis but still forgave them, and Israelis who admitted they were evil and didn't forgive themselves. There may have been more to these stories, of course, but we'll never know.

That was the human interest portion of the event and I believe was meant to carry a message of hope and reconcilation.

He showed a video by Jeff Halper of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions -- another of the above described Israelis -- who also has trouble condemning suicide bombing. During this discussion of bulldozers and the like, here are some words that never came up for some odd reason: suicide bombing, weapons lab, smuggling tunnel, sniper cover, and yes...compensation.

Last, but certainly not least, was Joe Carr. Young, 25 year-old Joe spent some time slumming it in Iraq and "Palestine." He's sort of a greasy-haired Michael Totten but without the erudition and who's probably eaten too many of the wrong kind of mushroom to quite grasp just what it is he's witnessing on his travels. Young Joe let slip, BTW, that Principal Anderson had been kind enough to fly him back to Boston for the event. How nice of him.

Joe's presentation rivaled Qumsiyeh's for pure mendacity and cluelessness. Oh yes.

He started in on Iraq by explaining that pretty much all of the death in Iraq has been America's fault. Starting with a half million deaths due to sanctions (young Joe has apparently never heard of "Oil for Food" and Saddams cheating therein), and moving on to the post-invasion where he describes American strategy there as one of "divide and conquer."

That's right, in Carr's explanation, it's America seeking to divide a previously united Iraq (where no one much cared if you were Kurd, Sunni or Shia) in order to conquer it and steal its oil.

This was tough to sit still for, considering that if we really wanted to divide Iraq, it would have made our job a lot easier (and the Kurds probably wouldn't mind), but instead we've been spending hundreds of billions of dollars and sacrificing thousands of American lives to keep the country together and come to some sort of accommodation between the sides. What Carr was talking about is exactly 180 degrees from the truth.

He seemed to blame all the thousands of deaths in Iraq on the American "occupation" (a popular word for the evening), and not on the actually perpetrators -- all those Iraqis who somewhere along the lines suddenly and for some strange reason started caring about which of their neighbors were Kurd or Sunni or Shia or Christian. Iraqi deaths by fellow Iraqis far, far outnumber the deaths of American soldiers, whom, Carr assures us, Iraqis have united to fight. They either have very poor aim or Carr's explanation of the realities in Iraq is useless.

Carr finally stops flaunting his ignorance and inability to observe outside his preconceived notions long enough to fly us to "Palestine," where he served as a foot soldier in the International Solidarity Movement. No need for a detailed recounting here...we have evil Israelis perpetrating nasty things on innocent Arabs...but that's not the worst of it.

No, no...Hey, you ever hear of Vogon Poetry, and how Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect were tied down and forced to listen to it as a form of torture? No? Well anyway, that's what being "treated" to a live performance of Joe Carr's "Rachel Corrie Rap" was like. This was what class time was spent on? I kept waiting for him to stop, but he never did. It went on and on. In fact, he may still be at it on the airplane back to wherever he came from (at Andover expense).

The best thing that could be said about these presentations was that they eventually ended.

And then the audience question time came...oh boy.

Principal Anderson tried to set some ground rules by warning everyone to keep it brief and keep it a question. Shyah...that worked.

First was a Kaffiyed woman who rambled on about being a Palestinian American and having her trip to Israel canceled at the last minute by the Israeli government and isn't that horrible that they would treat me, ME, an American citizen like this...before she was finally shouted down by calls of "Ask a question!!" Darlin', maybe they found out you were a radical activist and decided they didn't want you lying down in front of bulldozers (for which they would be responsible) and disrupting security activity and risk the lives of THEIR citizens in THEIR country...

Aw heck, let's just skip the Q&A portion (other than to mention the best question of the night, something like, "Is this what you've been spending precious school time on? Two lunatics and a white rapper?!")...it was unruly and didn't get to many individuals before the whole thing ended as described above.

It was quite a scene. I got the distinct feeling that Principal Peter Anderson simply had absolutely no clue what he was getting into with this group, and still has no idea what hit him because he just doesn't understand the issues involved, nor does he understand just what kind of person he has on his hands with Ron Francis and the type of people that Francis gathers. BTW, certain "insubordinate teachers" were looking rather proud of themselves after the event.

I think Andover parents and tax payers got the message.

I'm not sure what point the whole evening served. As I mentioned above, WoJ had no reason to expect a civil reception. The incident may have been more manageable had the format been more of a "debate" and had the stage been shared by people who could respond and counter. As it was, it was very difficult, no, impossible, to expect the audience to sit still and silent through all those lies and distortions without making some noise and shouting back. If they had known there was someone to respond, and not next week, but immediately, it might have been different and, as I said, possibly manageable.

Principal Anderson said that the group who would give next week's response was being vetted. I'd like to know who "vetted" Wheels of Justice.

One last thing, and it's sort of a side note, but I feel it has to be said, however briefly, by way of explanation of the source of at least some of the outrage expressed tonight -- aside from the legal stuff and the protecting children and teaching and all that stuff which I've already gone over multiple times...

You know Jews are in a tough position. They can be quiet and let the slanders, some of very ancient and recognizable heritage, build and build and eventually overwhelm them, or they can speak out and defend themselves. Yet when they defend themselves from the lies as anyone else would, the bigots simply use that to confirm the slanders -- "Aha!" they say, "You see, the Jews do control society...they don't allow criticism...they don't allow open debate!" (I can't wait to read Ron Francis's and Mazin Qumsiyeh's notes to their emails lists all about how the wicked Zionists bullied them tonight.)

There are about 323 million Arabs in the world today, about 1.4 to 1.6 billion Muslims...and there are between 12 and 14 million Jews with 6 million having been killed in one spasm still in living memory while they continue to carry on their backs a particular set of prejudices and hatreds the world directs at Jews and only Jews. Take a look at a map and note what a pin-prick of a country Israel is compared to its enemies, and consider the obscene obsession so many people have with criticizing that country among all others -- the one "Jewish" state.

America is the one country aside from Israel where Jews can live and feel in their bones that they have both built and maintained the foundations of the nation and, due both to these contributions and the founding philosophy of the state, not ever feel that they are guests or outsiders.

Now, given those hard-won comforts here in America, and the traditionally precarious history and present of Jews throughout the world, and those chains of bigotry they bear that their long history has placed on them, and the frequent feeling of "we've seen this before"...and you would have to be a moral infant not to understand much of the outrage expressed in that room tonight while watching slander-merchants like Qumsiyeh operate. And to think this group is focusing on the next generation, and that some people entrusted with your own children's future support this group...it's tough to take.

Fortunately, it wasn't just the Jews who were outraged, and I don't think many people are going to forget what they heard, and what some people foisted on their kids.

BTW, I did have a positive experience as I left -- a group of high school students standing right at the exit of the school where everyone would pass them, standing on chairs...holding an Israeli flag.

Update 1: Follow-up: Another Qumsiyeh Lie

Update 2: Just appeared on the air with Tommy Duggan on WCAP in Lowell. Tommy edits the Valley Patriot, a paper that's done yeoman's work in covering the Andover issue. I listen to a lot of talk radio, but I'm not a regular caller. Already doing the "shoulda said this, shoulda said that" thing. Gotta get my talk radio chops down. Thanks to Tom for all the time.

Update 3: I mentioned that Ron Francis was spotted trotting about school with his signs earlier in the day. Here are pictures of Ron's signs laying about the science department prep room while he walked around with his Israel/Apartheid sign. Looks like Somerville Divestment Project surplus:

Update 4: For those who were wondering, yes, there are plenty of photos of Ron Francis and his Somerville friends holding these signs. This entry concerning the SDP fight that took place in the fall shows Ron holding one of the signs above (scroll down). Here's the picture (click to expand), but check out that post for the context:

Also, here is the coverage of the event on FOX 25.

Andover Updates

Rumor has it that Ron Francis has been walking the halls with his sign, "Israel is an Apartheid State" -- I kid you not.

NO outside observers have been allowed in the classes. Tom Meyer's son, Richie, was there and was actually asked to leave a class (I have some "interesting" emails from him I may just post some day).

Wheels of Justice has been distributing sign-up sheets in the classes for the kids to get on their mailing list.

Principal Peter Anderson has had a lawyer by his side most of the day.

Heard anything? Email me at solomon a t solomonia d o t com.

Don't forget, the public event is 7PM TONIGHT at the High School. Plan on being there, early. There has been a call for people to be there as early as 5:30, so get there as soon as you can.

[Update: Anderson has stated he will have protesters removed from school property due to "safety concerns," so be prepared to assemble on public space.]

Here's a background piece on one of the speakers, Joe Carr, or is it Smith...what name is he using today...from Demember '05. Well worth reading in full. Here's a snip: A Foot Soldier in the Enemy's Trenches

"I am an anarchist; I seek to tear down hierarchies in my personal interactions, organizing structures, & society at large. I am a revolutionary; this US-dominated global capitalist system is inherently flawed & I aim to help accelerate its inevitable collapse & create a truly sustainable & egalitarian society. I work for peace in my personal interactions and I oppose all wars waged by governments to ensure their dominance, but I am NOT a pacifist; I find nonviolent tactics powerful and effective, but violence & property destruction have always been an essential part of revolutionary movements & I support everyone's right to self defense." –ISM activist Joseph Smith

The above quote is a self-description posted on the website of International Solidarity Movement (ISM) activist Joseph Smith. (The ISM is a smokescreen for various PLO anti-Israel and pro-Ba'ath Party groups in Iraq and relies on a few non-profits in the US like the Middle East Children's Alliance in California and Brecht Forum in New York to launder and disperse funds to its subgroups.) The Zelig of revolutionary pilgrims, Smith has been a prominent member of the anti-Israel campaign waged by radical agitators...

The ISM is known for taking young American kids and intentionally putting them in harm's way with the knowledge that any injury or death will be able to be used as a propaganda tool. It's happened...both injury and death. Carr is recruiting in Andover High School today.

Carr/Smith's website is worth looking at and illuminating.

The Eagle-Tribune quotes:

Carr's Web site says it is "dedicated to the overthrow of the U.S.-led global capitalist oppression" and displays the symbol for anarchy.

Carr/Smith's battle is in Andover High as you read this.

David Matas: Anti-Zionists and the impossible peace

A very good piece at Canada's Globe and Mail: Anti-Zionists and the impossible peace

The wish for peace on Earth easily leads to wishful thinking. But wishful thinking does not bring peace.

The never-ending anti-Zionist attacks on Israel have produced more than their fair share of deluded hope. The only real path to peace between Israel and its neighbours is a two- state solution, acceptance of the existence of Israel and creation of a separate Palestinian state beside Israel. But it is a solution that anti-Zionists constantly spurn. They want the destruction of Israel and its absorption into a larger Arab Muslim state, what is euphemistically called the one-state solution.

Anti-Zionists promote their cause by propagating phony charges against Israel to discredit and delegitimize the Jewish state. Wishful thinkers ignore the anti-Semitism at the core of anti-Zionist criticism and fantasize that, if only Israel avoided this or that behaviour that anti-Zionists decry, the two-state solution would be at hand.

This fantasy world has many imaginary constructions. One of these is that Palestinians who support anti-Zionists do not want to destroy Israel. Mary Corkery of KAIROS and Etienne De Jonghe of Pax Christi International asserted this remarkable proposition in a letter to the editor published in The Globe and Mail on Dec. 22. They wrote that Palestinians who voted for the anti-Zionist terrorist organization Hamas in last January's Palestinian election "did not vote to destroy Israel, nor do they want this." The authors do not explain how they know that Palestinians wanted something different from the platform of the party for which they voted...

ADL Director: Wheels of Justice offers extremism, not education

Andrew Tarsy writes in today's Eagle-Tribune (a similar piece also appears in The Jewish Advocate: Wheels of Justice offers extremism, not education

The "Wheels of Justice" controversy has nothing to do with freedom of speech. We all know that principals and teachers have wide discretion to determine what material to present to students and how to present it. This controversy is really about whether Wheels of Justice is an appropriate teaching resource for high school education on the Middle East conflict.

Like Hamas and Hezbolah, Wheels of Justice advocates want the State of Israel wiped off the map. Sound familiar? This is also the viewpoint of Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, whose most recent accomplishment is sponsoring an international conference denying the Holocaust.

Neither Wheels of Justice nor its local supporters accepts the right of the democratic State of Israel to exist, and argues that the sole cause of the Middle East conflict is the presence in the region of a Jewish state. Both refuse to acknowledge that any Palestinians engage in terrorism and equate Israel alternately with apartheid South Africa and Nazi Germany.

These extreme views ought to have raised red flags for the school. The right of Israel to exist is not up for debate. Moderates on all sides of the Middle East conflict long ago recognized the necessity of a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians. High schools hardly have enough time to teach the fundamentals of the conflict and struggle for peace and security in the Middle East. Indulging the fantasies of anti-Israel extremists undermines real efforts at education on this complex topic...

The rest is here.

The Eagle-Tribune also covers the story itself, here: Protests, injunction threatened against pro-Palestinian speaker

ANDOVER - Student protests and a court injunction are possible if Andover High School does not change the format of tomorrow's visit by pro-Palestinian speakers, a local lawyer said.

Pam Lebowitz has organized about 100 parents and residents who are demanding that the high school invite other guests to oppose Wheels of Justice, which they say is an extremist, anti-Israel group. Middle East scholars are coming to the school next week to give a different perspective, but that is not the same as having the two sides present at the same time, Lebowitz said.

"We don't understand why we can't have a more balanced forum," she said.

Lebowitz and some of her colleagues planned to plead their case to Superintendent Claudia Bach this morning, during her monthly coffee hour at Starbucks on Main Street. If Bach and Principal Peter Anderson do not make any changes, Lebowitz's group will help about 50 students who want to stage a walkout or picket in front of the school tomorrow, Lebowitz said.

Lebowitz, whose nephews attend the high school, may also seek an injunction to prevent Wheels of Justice from coming to the school, she said.

While she and some parents planned their strategy at Memorial Hall Library last night, others - along with students, teachers and community members - attended a forum at Temple Emanuel with David Cohen, the associate director of the Anti-Defamation League of New England.

The purpose of the forum was to give students a "deeper understanding" of the Wheels of Justice, Rabbi Robert Goldstein said. About 20 students attended, and they said that most of their discussions in school have been about whether the group has a right to speak there.

"We haven't really talked about what the group is," senior Jillian Bargar said.

Cohen told the audience that Wheels of Justice has a "destructive" and "frighteningly anti-Semitic" message, and he distributed a double-sided sheet of paper about Joe Carr and Mazin Qumsiyeh, the two members of the group who will speak to students tomorrow.

Carr's Web site says it is "dedicated to the overthrow of the U.S.-led global capitalist oppression" and displays the symbol for anarchy. In a recent article on the Palestine Chronicle's Web site, Qumsiyeh says "ethnic cleansing" is happening to Palestinians in Israel...

MEMRITV: Hamas Leader in Nablus: The Hamas of Car Bombs, Martyrdom-Seekers, and Qassam Missiles Is the Same Hamas of the Government and Parliament

I hear tell that Hamas is "the legitimately elected government of the Palestinian people." Do tell...

MEMRITV: Sheik Fayyadh Al-Akhdhar, a Hamas Leader in Nablus: The Hamas of Car Bombs, Martyrdom-Seekers, and Qassam Missiles Is the Same Hamas of the Government and Parliament [Watch the video at the link.]

Following are excerpts from an address at a Hamas rally by Sheik Fayyadh Al-Akhdhar, a Hamas leader in Nablus, which aired on Al-Aqsa TV on December 23, 2006.

Sheik Fayyadh Al-Akhdhar: The Hamas of the Revolution of the Mosques, of the War of the Knives, of the car bombs, of the great martyrdom-seekers, of the Al-Qassam missiles, of the Zionists' death tunnels, of the kidnapping of the soldiers and the setters is the same Hamas of the government, of the Legislative Council, and of the ministries. It has not changed, and it will not change, and it will continue to march along the path of the martyrs, and to follow in their footsteps, until the liberation of the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the filth of the aggressive oppressors.

Andover Minus One

Sorry for the lack of posts, busy and all.

Tomorrow, the radical group Wheels of Justice is scheduled to appear in several different Andover High School Social Studies classes to address the students -- with one outside observer (who may be friendly to the Wheels) and no recording devices allowed, begging the question: If there's nothing to hide, why the secrecy? Not surprisingly, a growing chorus of outraged parents is beginning to sing and direct their ire at the the responsible school officials and teachers, as well as the group itself which has foisted itself using legal threats and intimidation on a community that clearly doesn't want them. Of particular interest are union head Tom Meyers and physics teacher Ron Francis who have pushed the issue and forced town officials to weigh concern for education next to a protracted legal fight that would cost thousands of dollars out of strapped school budgets -- so deep is the care Francis and Meyers have for students that this legal blackmail is a small price to pay in their minds for the opportunity to push their political agendas on kids.

A source in the school tells me that Ron Francis left "little nasties" in all the teachers' mailboxes this morning (an essay entitled "Indeed There Is Apartheid in Israel"). The missive was unsigned, but Francis was spotted in the building VERY early. Perhaps it wasn't Francis who distributed the note, perhaps it was Heinrich, the monocled Flier Fairy who did it.

Once upon a time, teachers understood a word called "propriety," and outraged parents with pitch forks weren't required to do their own hall monitoring. Now, the Andover School Committee is mulling some sort of "outside speaker policy" to avoid legal battles and give them some better legal footing for the future. One cannot blame the committee for not already having such a policy as such a thing is almost without precedent. Francis and Meyers (and the ACLU's slavering willingness to serve them) are peerless for their arrogance and narcissism. "Propriety" isn't in their vocabularies. Society's day-to-day forms of behavior break down in the face of the sociopath.

Tomorrow evening there will be a second forum in Andover run by Wheels of Justice and that one will be open to the public. The exact format is unclear at this time, but it should be an interesting day...and evening.

Update: It strikes me that this would be an appropriate time to remind folks of some of the stuff that I wrote about in a posting from November 3. There's stuff there that may still be interesting if you didn't see it at the time, but here's a snip: Andover High Update -- Teachers Union and ACLU Dictate Curriculum

A couple of our freelance Solomonia operatives happened to have seen and spoken with Ron Francis while Francis was out campaigning for his divestment questions in Somerville this past week. For Francis, the disruption in the High School is a small price to pay for furthering his activism. He's quite pleased with trouble he's stirred and the 'profit' it's bringing him. Here's what our correspondents have related:
...I asked Francis about the Andover ordeal, at which point he and John [Spritzler] gleamed and thanked me for the free publicity... many students are approaching him and are asking about Palestinians and why there was all this hoopla...

"So now I get to talk to them about Palestinians and they trust me because I am their favorite teacher. They know I would not lie. As a physicist, I can talk to them scientifically."...

...When Francis was thanking me for the free publicity he and the WoJ got in the media, he lost his cool, and started bragging about his indoctrination of the students at AHS, saying that it would have been better for our side to just let the WoJ in, and be done with it. Because now, he said, there are enough students and teachers who are outraged and want to know "the truth" -- and guess who is going to deliver "the truth" to them? You guessed it -- the virtuous, righteous Dr. Francis, of course...

Totten: Hanging With Hezbollah

More on the scene reporting from Michael Totten.

“If they (Jews) all gather in Israel, it will save us the trouble of going after them worldwide.” – Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, October 23, 2002

BEIRUT – After Hezbollah mounted a protest aimed at bringing down Lebanon’s elected government, several thousand demonstrators remained downtown and camped out in tents, effectively occupying the center of the city. They first tried to seize and occupy Prime Minister Fouad Seniora’s office in the Ottoman-era Serail. But Seniora warned Hezbollah that if his office were taken he could not control his “street.” Translation: If you seize the state’s institutions, the Sunni Muslims of Lebanon are going to kill you. Hezbollah knew this was true, and so they backed off. It didn’t hurt that the government of Saudi Arabia backed up Seniora on this point. But Hezbollah’s occupation of the neutral parts of downtown continues even into 2007.

I ventured downtown myself the day after the made-for-TV protest was over, when Hezbollah and friends no longer wanted attention from foreign media. Their lack of interest, if I could call it that, was instantly obvious. Ubiquitous security agents with the tell-tale sunglasses and earpieces stared at me coldly and turned their heads as I walked past.

Hundreds of tents were set up in parks, parking lots, and squares downtown, most of them made of white canvass. I snapped a few pictures, and nobody stepped in to stop me.

One group of tents in a parking lot across from the Hariri mosque were all made of black canvas. What’s up with the black tents, I wondered. So I walked over and lifted my camera to my face.

Five ear-pieced Hezbollah agents aggressively pounced on me at once. They surrounded me and screamed “No!” Then they physically pushed me away from the tents and got in my face so I could not see behind them...

The rest.

MEMRI: Advisor to Iranian President Ahmadinejad: 'Hitler Was Jewish'

Deranged. Perhaps they can have this guy in to lecture at Andover High.

MEMRI: Advisor to Iranian President Ahmadinejad: 'Hitler Was Jewish'

In a December 28, 2006 interview with the Iranian website Baztab, which is affiliated with Iranian Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezai, Iranian Presidential Advisor Mohammad Ali Ramin said that Hitler was Jewish, and that Hitler's policies were aimed at bringing about the establishment of a Jewish state. Ramin added that Hitler acted under the influence of his powerful Jewish associates and in cooperation with Britain, since the latter shared his desire to force the Jews out of Europe. [1]

Ramin was recently appointed secretary-general of the new "world foundation for Holocaust Studies" established at the Iranian Holocaust Denial Conference in December. [2]

The following are excerpts from the interview: [3]

Adolf Hitler... Developed an Aversion to Judaism Because His Mother Was a Jewish Whore

"The Bolshevik Soviet government in Lenin's time, and later, in Stalin's - both of whom were Jewish, though they presented themselves as Marxists and atheists... - was one of the forces that, until the Second World War, cooperated with Hitler in promoting the idea of establishing the State of Israel. A book that was published about this... - titled Adolf Hitler, Founder of Israel by Hennecke Kardel, a German born in 1922 - proves that Hitler was Jewish, and that his grandmother was a Jewish prostitute. [Hitler's] father went by his mother's Jewish name until he was 40, and later changed his surname to Hitler.

"Adolf Hitler himself developed an aversion to Judaism because his mother was a Jewish whore. He first received [negative] information about the Jews in an Austrian monastery, (the book presents details and pictures of it), and from then on, he [tried] to escape his Judaism.

"Thus... Hitler simultaneously developed both feelings of solidarity with Judaism and feelings of hatred towards it, and this emotional ambivalence shaped his behavior towards the Jews. On the one hand, his entire family, the people who shared his views, and his associates who brought him into power and stood by him to the last - including his lovers and his personal doctor - were [all] Jewish...

You think my Andover crack in the beginning is pure snark? Not pure. Take a look at Mazin Qumsiyeh's latest rant (Qumsiyeh being one of the principals behind Wheels of Justice -- not sure if he'll be one of those addressing the kids.) and compare how he doesn't necessarily deny the Holocaust, he just claims there were ulterior motives and that the Jews Zionists were willing collaborators. Note also the typical Qumsiyeh dishonesty -- present a kernel of truth, hide the rest, and present that kernel in a false context as in this piece where he ties Zionism and Nazism together. Note also that in Qumsiyeh's world, it's Hitler and its critics that define Zionism (as an aside, never take a quote for granted with a guy like this without checking the context): Holocaust Deniers and the Iraq Study Group

The horrors of what happened in Europe as a result of 19th century nationalism fed the ethnocentric nationalism known as Zionism, and was used to justify the ethnic cleansing and destruction of Palestinian society...

...In ‘Mein Kampf’, the only Jews admired were the Zionists. Hitler called it a "great movement out of Vienna" that helped him dispel the doubts he had as to whether Judaism simply represented another religion or was a nationality (and thus did not belong in Europe). After the 1935 Nazi racial laws were introduced, the Zionist Federation of Germany was the only Jewish group allowed to function, with offices open in Berlin until 1942. This is not surprising, considering that they (ZFG) wrote to the new Nazi regime that “Zionism believes that a rebirth of national life, such as is occurring in German life through adhesion to Christian and national values, must also take place in the Jewish national group”...

...The horrors of what happened in Europe as a result of 19th century nationalism fed the ethnocentric nationalism known as Zionism, and was used to justify the ethnic cleansing and destruction of Palestinian society. It is now destabilizing Western Asia and encouraging other narrow chauvinistic ideologies (e.g. Bin Laden's Pan-Islamic nationalism mirroring Zionism by claiming to represent members of a particular religion wherever they live)...

Andover Update

Just got back from a long meeting held by some folks in the Andover community concerning the situation in the High School there. Obviously (I hope), I'm not going to give any details other than to say that if anyone was wondering if there were any parents,or people in authority (including the school committee), speaking out, they can stop wondering...there were a lot of angry people there, and they have the right names to be angry about. There need to be more, but that's a question of making more noise in the community and it's apparent that there are some well-meaning people out there who are not as much a part of the solution as they should be, some of whom are clearly and mistakenly (in my view) looked to for leadership. You can listen to and respect a certain viewpoint without necessarily looking to that person to be a leader and make a final decision.

Vague enough? Sorry. Bottom line is the saga continues and Wheels of Justice is scheduled to proselytize the kids this Friday. People are angry.

Update: Actually, I have some other thoughts on this I'll add later.

Eh, what's another 400 cars between friends?

Paris: Hundreds of cars torched overnight

VANDALS set fire to about 400 cars overnight and police said they arrested more than 250 people, as violence marred France's New Year celebrations.

However, a police spokesman said there were fewer problems than in 2005, when youths attacked trains in the Paris region and southeast of the country...

So things are getting better then!

MEMRI: American Professor Natana DeLong-Bas: 'I Do Not Find Any Evidence that Would Make Me Agree that Osama bin Laden Was Behind the Attack on the Twin Towers'

Reading the interview, DeLong-Bas actually finds more evidence for a Western conspiracy against the Arab and Islamic Worlds than she does for the idea that Bin Laden was behind the Trade Center bombings. Further, Sayyed Qutb, Wahhabism, responsible for extremism and terror? She doesn't buy it. Even the great British explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton, traveling on the Hajj as a Westerner in disguise back in the 19th century wrote about bands of religious extremists terrorizing and preying on the pilgrims...men known as "Wahhabis." Where do they get these academics? Boston College and...Brandeis....in this case.

MEMRI: American Professor Natana DeLong-Bas: 'I Do Not Find Any Evidence that Would Make Me Agree that Osama bin Laden Was Behind the Attack on the Twin Towers'

On December 21, 2006, the London daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat published an interview with Dr. Natana DeLong-Bas, who taught this year in the Department of Theology at Boston College and in the Department of Near East and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University. [1] In the interview, she said that Wahhabism is not extremism and that the Muslim Brotherhood and Sayyed Qutb have nothing to do with jihadism. Dr. DeLong-Bas also indicated that there may be a Western conspiracy against the Arab and Islamic world, and said that she knows of no evidence that Osama bin Laden was behind the 9/11 attacks.

In 2004, DeLong-Bas published her doctoral dissertation in book form under the title Wahhabi Islam: From Revival and Reform to Global Jihad. This book, published by the Oxford University Press, has been highly recommended by the Saudi Embassy in Washington, D.C. [2]

According to the book's jacket, "Ibn al-Wahhab was not the godfather of contemporary terrorist movements. Rather, he was a voice of reform, reflecting mainstream eighteenth-century Islamic thought. His vision of Islamic society was based upon monotheism in which Muslims, Christians, and Jews were to enjoy peaceful co-existence and cooperative commercial treaty relations."

Dr. Natana DeLong-Bas is a contributor to The Oxford Dictionary of Islam, The Encyclopedia of the Qur'an, and The Encyclopedia of the Islamic World.

The following are excerpts from the Al-Sharq Al-Awsat interview...

Breath of the Beast II

New blog Breath of the Beast has a second post up, and it's almost as good as the first: In The Beast's Face

...At the summit of the mountain, two observation towers stand cheek-to-cheek bellied right up against the border. One on either side, they are positioned slightly offset to each other so that each can see beyond the other into the territory behind it. One tower is manned by Israeli soldiers and the other by Hizbollah terrorists. Although, back then, things were relatively quiet along that border, an occasional rocket attack would find it’s way across from the Lebanon side. Just that past March, a pair of Hizbollah terrorists had infiltrated across the border dressed in Israel Defense Force uniforms. They set themselves up on a hill that commands a clear view of a road intersection that all of the civilian (and none of the military) traffic uses to get to and from the kibbutzim in the area. They waited until mid-day when they could be sure that military patrols and most men would be out of the area and then began shooting at cars traveling along the road. Before the real Israel Defense Force arrived, they murdered two women, two men and a fifteen-year-old girl who lived on a nearby kibbutz.

Gal is Shimon and Rikki's daughter. She is a lovely fifteen-year-old with a sweet smile and a wonderful command of English. If you ran into her on any street in the US, at first glance, she would be indistinguishable from any other smart, well-brought-up youngster over here. She gave up her bedroom for me to sleep in for the night – graciously insisting over my objections. She was just as welcoming and generous as her parents and all of the other Israelis I met over there. As I bent down to put my bags on the bed in her room, I glanced out the window and saw those two towers silhouetted against the darkening evening sky. Just a few hundred yards up the slope, the Hizbollah Tower seemed to be craning its neck past the Israeli tower to get a better look at me.

At one point during our dinner together, Rikki and Shimon got up to get (even more) food while Gal and I kept chatting. At one point she looked at me very seriously and said, "You were not afraid to come?" I smiled. Here was a young woman who woke up every morning literally under the guns of a group who, if not for the Israelis in the other tower, would gladly murder her just for the sake of the political statement. I suddenly felt like laughing. I truthfully hadn't given the dangers much of a thought until I had seen the tower through her bedroom window. Now she watched me as I framed my answer and I could see that she had a maturity and judgment impossible (and, thankfully, unnecessary) for most American teens...

The rest.

TSA Posting CAIR Press Releases

Amazing. The Transportation Safety Administration has taken to posting Council on American Islamic Relations press releases directly on their web site. Andrew McCarthy has the whole story, including a run-down of CAIR's terror ties: Singing CAIR’s Tune, On Your Dime

Read it all, and remember it also as a good resource for what CAIR is really all about.

WND: Muslims shout at Jesus' home: 'Islam will dominate the world'

Just to be clear, Nazareth is well inside of Israel proper. There is no security fence or "wall" there, so the usual excuses cannot possibly apply.

March through town of Nazareth 'meant to intimidate Christians'

NAZARETH – Islamic groups held a large militant march down the main streets of Nazareth this weekend, highlighting for some here the plight of Christians in this ancient city where Muslims have become a majority and members of the dwindling Christian population say they suffer regular intimidation.

Nazareth, considered one of the holiest cities for Christians, is described in the New Testament as the childhood home of Jesus. It contains multiple important shrines and churches, including the famous Church of the Basilica of the Annunciation, the site at which many Christians believe the Virgin Mary was visited by the Archangel Gabriel and told that she had been selected as the mother of Jesus.

The Islamic Movement, the main Muslim political party in Nazareth, said it organized yesterday's march to celebrate Eid ul-Adha, or the Feast of the Sacrifice, which commemorates the Muslim belief Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son Ishmael for Allah.

Christian and Jewish faith dictates it was Isaac, not Ishmael, whom Abraham almost sacrificed.

Islamic Movement leaders paraded down Nazareth's main thoroughfare brandishing their party's green flag. Young Muslim men in battle gear marched and beat drums as a man on loudspeaker repeatedly exclaimed in Arabic, "Allah is great."

Hundreds of activists strutted screaming Islamist epithets, including "Islam is the only truth" and "Islam shall rule all."...

...While the march was billed as a celebration, it's militant virtues were clearly visible. The event seemed more a show of force than a street party.

"The march is meant to intimidate Christians," said Saleem, a Nazareth Christian resident who asked that his last name be withheld for fear of what he said was "Muslim retaliation" for speaking out.

"It's part of the methods used by the Muslims in very obvious ways to create an atmosphere where the Christians should know the Muslims are the main power and we are not welcome anymore," Saleem said.

...Like Bethlehem's Christians, those in Nazareth spoke of attacks against Christian-owned shops and told stories of Christian women being raped by Muslim men. They noted several instances of interreligious violence and Muslim riots they said began when Muslims attacked Christian worshippers. The Muslims claimed Christians started the violence.

Israeli security officials say the majority of anti-Christian violence in Nazareth goes unreported because local Christians are too afraid to report crimes.

One Christian resident said violence and intimidation tend to increase around the time of local elections. The Islamic parties, once in the minority, are now one seat away from dominating Nazareth's city council.

"During the last elections, Muslims on the streets were openly threatening the Christians. They tried to stop some of the Christian cars from voting," said Saleem.

In October 2000, the Arab Christian mayor of Nazareth, Ramiz Jaraisy, was reportedly beaten by members of the opposing Islamist party.

Nazareth's Christian population, at times the majority during the city's long history, is now at about 37 percent, according to the Israeli Bureau of Statistics, which notes a regular downward trend.

The situation mirrors similar trends in West Bank and Gaza cities controlled or dominated by Muslim Arabs.

Siham el-Fahum, a Muslim Nazareth municipality member and a local historian, admits Christians are fleeing her city because of Christian-Muslim tension.

"There is no doubt the situation for Christians in Nazareth is bad," el-Fahum told WND.

"Christians like to live where life can be good for them, whereas Muslims are more attached to the community and will stay through tough times. Muslims in the city want more dominance and the only way to achieve that, logically, is at the expense of Christians. It's a delicate balancing act that is having negative consequences for Christians."...

Like many Muslims here, el-Fahum claimed Christians several times "instigated" Muslim riots. But she said in the struggle for power, "the Muslims are definitely on the rise."

She said the core of the conflict began in 1998, when Israel approved a local Muslim request to build a mosque in front of the Church of the Annunciation...

...Muslims hold regular prayer services at the site neighboring the Annunciation church throughout the week, usually drawing large numbers of worshippers on Fridays.

Yesterday's afternoon service, attended by WND, was preceded by a sermon delivered by a prominent local sheik, who shouted into a loudspeaker, "Islam will dominate the world."
