Sadly, I'm not surprised at this soldiers's account of how the press works (or doesn't work is maybe the better way to put it). This is no doubt the same way the American press works everywhere else. It takes time, determination, discernment, and maturity to get at the real story in most situations. Let's not forget that American news divisions are required to be an income generator for their parent conglomerates. As in every industry, overhead is pruned relentlessly, and results are commanded to happen quicker and quicker. This is further compounded by the 24-hour news cycle, a beast that must be continually fed with something, anything, just so there's no silence. None of this allows for thoughtful and insightful journalism. Thank goodness for bloggers, because without them the public may never hear "the rest of the story".

I agree with you, but let's not blame the American orgs and profit-motive over-much. Even organizations with guaranteed cash-flows are afflicted. The BBC hasn't exactly covered itself in glory, for instance.
