Depressing.
It reminds me of a cabdriver years ago who told me that Salman Rushdie was "a secret Jew," which explained his blasphemies against Islam. Actually, he told me that Rushdie was a secret Christian who secretly converted to Judaism. No kidding! And there was another cabdriver who told me that The Jews controled the US Federal Reserve, and so THEY were behind the economic recession going on at the time.
It also reminds me of a highly cultivated, educated, and moderate Jordanian friend who just wanted to be reassured on one point: He asked me: "It isn't true that Judaism teaches that non-Jews don't have souls, right?" I reassured him. Ouch!
