Friday evening I attended the following event:

In commemoration of the Armenian Genocide, the Mashtots Chair in Armenian Studies of Harvard University, Dr. James Russell announces a lecture by Dr. Andrew G. Bostom:

"Jihad in Europe: Past as Prologue?" based upon his recently published book, The Legacy of Jihad

Friday April 28, 2006 5-6 PM
The Semitic Museum, Room 201
6 Divinity Avenue
Cambridge, MA

Admission Free

Contact: Dr. James Russell

I know Dr. Bostom was disappointed because C-Span's BookTV was willing to send a Boston crew to cover the event, but the requisite permissions couldn't be had in time, but the room was very small and as it was, the approximately 40 people who did attend were crammed in together in a very small space to hear the lecture. The Semitic Museum at Harvard is a very cool spot, but perhaps doesn't have much in the way of large lecture facilities. The sarcophagi take up all the space, I suppose.

I did not take much in the way of notes -- getting a digital recorder has made me somewhat lazy in that respect, and below you will find a link to the audio of the entire talk, including introductory remarks by Dr. James Russell, Mashtots Professor of Armenian Studies at Harvard. Dr. Bostom begins speaking at about 10 minutes in and frames his talk, in keeping with the theme, loosely around the Armenian genocide as a way of discussing "the uniquely Islamic institutions" of Jihad and Dhimmitude in the European context. He touches on Bat Ye'or's work and the Euro-Arab dialogue, the recent European riots, as well as the history of these two institutions, Jihad and Dhimmitude -- a sort of "what we have in store for us" if we're not careful...

Here is the audio: Bostom_2006_04_28 I missed about the first minute of introductory remarks by Dr. Russell, and as I said, Dr. Bostom begins at about the 10 minute mark, then goes on a little over an hour including a sometimes contentious Q&A.

I feel fortunate to live in an area like this where such events (and at such locations!) are free and available to anyone who cares to walk in a grab a seat if only you know about them. Thanks to the internet, you can get a seat, too.

the subject was extremely important. it took Bostom quite a while before he got to the Armenian material. But one of his main points was that the very effort of the Armenians to relieve themselves of their dhimmi status (by appealing to the Russians) provoked the genocidal rage of the Turkish government which used Jihad rhetoric extensively. The point reminded me of the argument that Christopher Boehm makes in his work on Montenegran tribal feuds. As part of an explanation for the remorseless hostility of every other alpha male to the emergence of a leader, he comments that it makes evolutionary sense as a survival mechanism in that, were any serious leader to arise, the Turks would have exterminated them. Predictability of murderous violence: one of the lynch pins of dhimmi behavior.

Since we are now esconced in Maine, and unable to get to the (fantastic without talks) Semitic Museum, let me tell you you have made my day with this audio !

THANKS! I haven't seen you since the night I met Bat Yeor.

Glad you're still at it

1) You must have Javascript enabled in your browser in order to comment (blame the spammers). If you don't know what that is, you're probably fine.

2) HTML is on, so basic html should work. Raw links will be made auto-clickable, too, so even if you don't know html you can just paste in the link and it should work fine. Keep the "http://" in it.

3) Comments are generally unmoderated, which means I don't necessarily agree with the tone and tenor of everything posted. In fact, sometimes people post things they don't really mean just to make other people look bad. The internet is an anonymous place for the most part. That said...

4) I welcome you to post here. I'd love to have your input, agree, disagree or just offer a different data point, really. If I didn't want any participation, I'd turn off comments. It may pay to recall a famous line from the Tom Selleck magnum opus, Mr. Baseball: "Jack-san, you want Yoji's advice about the babes, you come to Yoji with respect."

5) Enjoy your stay!

"Islam is not merely a personal religion but also the basis of a political community. If non-Muslims were entitled to the same rights as the faithful, then belief in God's final and perfect message as revealed in the Quran through his prophet Muhammad would be irrelevant, and the basis of the community would cease to exist."
