Sorry for the silence (and lack of returned emails) -- the day went: office, mow lawn, remove guts of old computer and move everything into new case, reinstall Windows and all software (still in progress). The computer stuff is fun, but occasionally frustrating and very time consuming. I do love computer guts under my fingernails. Happiness is a clean Windows installation and a dust-free case.

I love getting a new computer. But I get very antsy setting things up as I like them. As you noted - it takes forever. I can start installing stuff and not look up for hours, then realize I've missed several important things. :-)

I'm looking to get a new computer too - I just haven't decided what to get yet. I don't build my own or I'd really drive myself nuts. But the poor old box I have now is about 5 years old and really I do need an upgrade before this one bites the dust. The hard drives are getting noisy.

Anyhow, good luck with the rest of the installation. Hope it all goes smoothly!

Well, there are noisy hard drives and then there's the "Click whiiirrr...click whiiiirrr" of death. I hate when that happens.

I can understand not wanting to build your own, it's very daunting -- but satisfying when you accomplish it. What I like is really knowing exactly what's going on in my system, knowing I used all good parts and that there's nothing proprietary in there, so anything can be swapped out or added to at any time.

On the other hand, there's no calling Dell and saying, "Help, I have a problem." When something bad happens (and I ran into a snag partitioning a new hard drive), you have to solve it yourself.

I installed in this case. The guy who put that together is a god of good cable management. My setup isn't nearly so clean.

Wow! that's a beautiful setup - I think I'd be in complete meltdown if I tried to build something like that. *grin* It is gorgeous though.

I'm still stalling on mine - can't decide if I want to go to the trouble of having one built special, or calling CDW and creating one from a base model. (I waffle because it's not an emergency yet, probably a very bad thing)

Having lived near CDW headquarters - I've always had good luck with them, but now I'm across country not a couple towns over. Thus I'm in a quandry. Which I will eventually sort out. When I don't know what I want - I usually let things stew a bit and see what my mind comes up with... I haven't let my subconcious work on it long enough yet.

"Syme: It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words. You wouldn't have seen the [Newspeak] Dictionary 10th edition, would you Smith? It's that thick. [illustrates thickness with fingers] The 11th Edition will be that [narrows fingers] thick. Winston Smith: So, The Revolution will be complete when the language is perfect? Syme: The secret is to move from translation, to direct thought, to automatic response. No need for self-discipline. Language coming from here [the larynx], not from here [the brain]" -1984 (film)
