Egyptian blogger and friend, the Ranting Sandmonkey writes:

Freedom For Egyptians reminded me why the cartoons looked so familiar to me: they were actually printed in the Egyptian Newspaper Al Fagr back in October 2005. I repeat, October 2005, during Ramadan, for all the egyptian muslim population to see, and not a single squeak of outrage was present. Al Fagr isn't a small newspaper either: it has respectable circulation in Egypt, since it's helmed by known Journalist Adel Hamoudah. Looking around in my house I found the copy of the newspaper, so I decided to scan it and present to all of you to see...

He has the scans right here. The cartoons start right on the front page.

Guess it takes awhile for some folks to work up a good rage. Can't wait to see how they react to the wedding party hotel bonming in Jordon.

And some people can't spell. Should preview before posting. Supposed to be hotel 'bombing'.

The Sandmonkey rocks...........

Great find.

The Faux Rage will continue though.

Good question, Tom. What I really want to know is how they'll react when they learn they're not under the Ottoman Empire anymore?

But the NYT would never, never publish such things. The offensive nature is patently obvious. Gosh, it looks like the whole US publishing world got suckered into one of the biggest scams ever.

Did editorial comments accompany the photos?

err... make that cartoons, not photos.

Published in October? Bit of a Fagr?

Please be more precise: Which date in october did they publish the cartoons?

jdavenport and fnimion, you will want to ask those questions at the Sandmonkey's blog.

Holy crackers--we've been snookered once more! It's "you wouldn't DARE bomb during Ramadan" all over again.

Is it the West's relative ignorance about Islam, some amorphous nature inherent in Islamic theology, or a combination of the two that sets us up for these scams again and again?

Great work, dont worry about te spelling or the precious date, we good people know what you are saying. keep up the good work

The Danish ambassador to Egypt, Mr. Bjarne Sørensen, confirms that the cartoons were indeed printed as Sandmonkey claims. See the website of national Danish radio here:
