The folks at the Oxford University Press blog have five questions with former Israeli Foreign Minister, Shlomo Ben-Ami on the upcoming elections.

...If Mahmoud Abbas resigns, as he suggested he might today, would we then see someone from Hamas elevated to president of the Palestinian Authority?

I can't see that possibility at all. If Abbas resigns, which is perfectly possible because the man is a quitter by nature, then it will be another high ranking member of Fatah that will replace him...

I am not sure that this is a correct estimate of Abbas. It is true, he used the weapon of quitting several times under Arafat, but every time it was a calculated move to improve his bargaining position.
