Danny Sokatch of The New Israel Fund..."With Friends Like These..."

What better example of the utter failure - some would say betrayal - by so-called Jewish leadership than the following letter. It's a sad story of wealthy and powerful community institutions caving to the dominant hard left paradigm - in this case, The New Israel Fund, affiliate of J Street and funders of Arab groups that provided highly suspect information to enemies of Israel such as the widely discredited Goldstone Commission of the United Nations.

The NIF funds primarily Arab and Israeli organizations that engage in hypercriticism of Israel to the point of fabricating evidence under the guise of humanitarian purposes. Some of the recipients of NIF's largess include Physicians for Human Rights (whose director in Israel refuses to document the illegal use of Palestinian ambulances and hospitals to transport and hide weapons) and Adalah, the ostensible "human rights" organization among whose notable aims is to eliminate Israel as a Jewish State and to only permit Jewish immigration for "humanitarian" purposes.

Such groups represent a perfect fit for J Street; what better way to be "Pro Israel" than to destroy it?

And then there is Machsom Watch, the fanatical group that microscopically inspects checkpoints, helping to ensure that suicide bombers like Wafa al Biss can have unfettered entry to Israeli hospitals in order to "level the playing field" for abused Palestinians. When this group's director was presented with the evidence of this unrealized bomber's intentions at the Erez crossing, she furiously claimed that the photographs and documentation were "forgeries". I can't decide which is more potentially lethal: the perfidy or the fantasy. At any rate, these are the kind of allies that the New Israel Fund cultivates and supports. Some of these groups are deeply involved in the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) initiatives that are gaining ground around the world. Mossawa, "The Advocay Center for Arabs in Israel" and a NIF cash recipient, recently urged the Norwegian government to divest in Israel.

The Boston JCRC knows full well the extent of anti-Israel activities carried on by NIF's allied groups. But then, what can we expect from an organization that indirectly financed a local divestment campaign?

Nancy Kaufman, JCRC's Director, lavishes praise on the NIF by claiming that the group has "promoted consensus" and has "built bridges". The bottom line, of course, is that the only consensus promoted by the NIF is one that eliminates Israel as a Jewish State and that has constructed bridges that the world's Israel-haters can walk across in order to subvert Israel from within. No one can argue with an appeal for "civility", but this letter goes way beyond that call; it is an expression of solidarity from a comrade. How odd that Ms. Kaufman never mentions the assiduous work of Mr. Sokatch's organization on behalf of those that would destroy the Jewish State.

As for Danny Sokatch, what more can you say about a guy who enthusiastically supported the inclusion of the Rachel Corrie propaganda film at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival and when asked to explain the controversy, replied that the opposition to the film's showing was a conspiracy against "community organizing." We've got your back, Mr. President.

Since adalah is against Israel as a Jewish State, is adalah also against Muslim States?

Is adalah against Saudi Arabia, the "Islamic Republic of iran", Pakistan, any country with a flag that has the crescent and star on it?

Is adalah against Muslim Only cities, for instance mecca/makkah?

"The politics of NIF-supported groups are clear, their humanitarian impact, if any, is not clear to me.

In the meantime, there are many groups in Israel that do indeed work "to empower the underprivileged" and who do so without the political baggage of NIF. Two of these come to mind immediately: the Tel Aviv Foundation and the Jerusalem Foundation. Both are well established and have long records of work among the poor, both Arabs and Jews, work that they have done without fanfare and without public grandstanding. I would urge the reader to consult the websites of each.

About a year ago my wife Rita and I visited the Bialik - Rogozin School in Yaffo, which is supported by the Tel Aviv Foundation. We found young children of many backgrounds studying in this very modern, well equipped Israeli institution. I was particularly struck by the many black faces from Africa -- six and seven-year olds -- all speaking Hebrew like sabras. They were children of African refugees, some of whom were in the country as undocumented immigrants. "This is the only place on earth where refugees from Darfur and other African countries are treated like human beings," a Tel Aviv Foundation spokesperson writes in an e-mail. While I was at the school and witnessed the colorful array of faces, I kept thinking of Jimmy Carter, who had just written his strange assessment of Israel as "apartheid." I kept asking myself, is Carter just ignorant or is he malicious ?

So, well, no, we do not need the NIF to "empower the underprivileged" in Israel."

Time to start divesting from JCRC.

Isn't it interesting that theseliberals are only concerned with "civility" and "tolerance" when it concerns them. They aren't so concerned about extending civility and tolerance to those who have differnt points of view. Apparently, for NIF, JCRC anJ Street it's a one way street.

Lou, what all due respect, I believe that Liberals are OK.

It's the leftists, socialists, "progressives" who are working to destroy the US.

europe is of course a lost cause (except for the Czech Republic and Denmark and hopefully Italy).

P.S. I voted AGAINST BhO, I voted for John McCain.
