This is just a quick link to follow -- an "aside." These are links to interesting things that, for one reason or another, I didn't place into a full posting. Go to the blog index for a regular listing of posts.
MEMRI: Western Countries Cancel Iraqi Debt, Gulf Countries Don't - 'During the long years of Saddam Hussein's rule in Iraq, economic data were treated as top national secrets, and the revelation of such data to unauthorized persons could bring the death penalty. Therefore, it was only after the fall of the regime that the extent of Iraq's enormous sovereign debt, estimated at the time in excess of $120 billion, was to become a public record. After the invasion of Iraq in April 2003, it became evident that the country's economic and social development could not be initiated with so much external debt overhang, and the issue was taken up by the Paris Club...'

why do cancelling debts consiederd a noble act ,from western countries... as Dr. Nimrod Raphaeli implies.
and gulf countries dont have the right to ask for their money? whats the connection?
gulf countries gave money to iraq honestly and in a brave way to stop the iranians from spreading their revolution, which khumeniay stated that he will spread the iranian revoulution.
while other countries, without naming, helped both the iraqies and iranians from under the table.....which act is noble now...gulf countries or being double faced?
cancelling debts is a issue that gulf countries are concerned with, if its in their interest they will cancle it, if not then no.
and there is a great deal of resemblance in not canceling the debt, which is that nobody is satisfied with the iranian government in iraq.
mainly because iraq government is pro iran ( especially akram bour shah, now known as nouri al maliki). so its gulf countries right to ask for every penny.
and remeber that saudia arabia haulted one of the greates construction schemes, which could of put saudia at least 10 years ahead of where it is now, because of the war expences, and nobody nows how many billion of oil was burnt in kuwait, let alone the enviromentel affects from those fires. so why should countries that sufferd be compared to countries that didnt? let alone the number of saudies that became extremest and threatend the government, including osama bin laden, on the matter of having american soldiers on the saudia soil.... and mokkings from all arab leaders at saudia about having american solders. iraq war caused alot of problems to those two countries that can be written in books, and its their right to have every penny back, and if they cancell the debt, they will cancell it to a good iraqi government, not like saddam and not iranian government, and the will cancel it due to the arab ties with iraq.
especially that america cancells debts from one side, and allowes american companies like haliburten to have a piece of the cake, especially the oil laws that were constructed in the usa. and the oil pipe from north of iraq to israel.
so once again , countries that took iraq 50 years back, cant be described as nobale when they cancell 4 billion. although the act itself is good, but doesnt mean they are not responsibale of taking the richest arab country 50 years back, and killing more than a million civilian, and the most important thing is that alqaeda is now in iraq, because of this war! remeber that nothing of the war reasons where found in iraq.
