This Spectator headline is indeed a bit sensational: ‘So close to war’- We came so close to World War Three that day, but the article is intriguing -- and yet I feel no closer to knowing what really happened on that day Israel bombed...something...in Syria.
The only thing we conclusively learn from any of these stories is how enthusiastically government "sources" pretend to be informed about things they (thankfully) know nothing about.
Chances are, the story -- or parts of it -- will come out in the next few years.
Right now, the people who DO know the whole story ain't talking. Under the circumstances, I prefer it that way.
After all, until someone in the Israeli defense / intelligence community blabs -- or, more likely, an American counterpart does so -- then Syria knows simply that: (a) they installed the most advanced anti-aircraft system ever seen; (b) Israel was able to fly through it as though it wasn't there; (c) Israel could probably do the same thing in Iran, which uses the same systems; and (d) Israel refuses to discuss exactly how it was done.
I like that scenario, just as it is.
