The Islamic Society of Boston has revealed that they intend to broadcast an amplified call to prayer throughout the neighborhood now that the Boston mosque is complete...but that's contrary to what two previous spokespeople assured the public when the mosque was still under construction.

The Boston Globe has done a pleasant puff-piece on the Islamic Society of Boston/Muslim American Society Boston Mosque: Making peace, and prayers. Sub-head: 'Mosque opens its doors as controversy fades'. Controversy fades? Only in the pages of the Boston Globe. Quoted in the piece are representatives of the Muslim American Society (MAS) and Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR), without mentioning both groups' ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, the many controversies that stir around both groups, the mosques' ties to Saudi extremists and funding, the fractures within the local Muslim Community itself, and the many other still-living issues surrounding the mosque project and its leadership. As Michael Graham writes today:

...Speaking of taxpayer screwjobs, the Boston Globe-Democrat has a story today about the opening of Menino's Mosque. Interestingly, this long and detailed article leaves out the two key facts about the Islamic Society of Boston's project:

The taxpayers of Boston subsidized the building of this mosque by "donating" a $2 million parcel of land to the ISB for less than $200,000- -- a deal arranged when a member of the Boston Redevelopment Board also just happened to be a fundraiser for the ISB.

The ISB is notorious for its support of terror advocates like Mullah Al-Qawadari, who was the first prominent mullah to urge women to become suicide bombers, too. The ISB has actually distributed the teachings of this sicko. And now, thanks to Mayor Menino, they've got a publicly-funded mosque to continue their work.

A revealing comment appears in religion reporter Michael Paulson's related blog entry: A view from the minaret. Paulson makes a stab at climbing the minaret. He writes:

I made it high enough to report that there's a nice view to be had of the crescent-topped mosque dome silhouetted against the distant skyline, but not high enough to tell you what it would be like if you were the muezzin who had to go up there five times a day to chant the call to prayer. Of course, the muezzin can't tell you either -- he's no fool -- they're going to broadcast the prayer summons (which will only happen during the day out of respect for the neighbors) by loudspeaker.

Well isn't that interesting? If you'd like to hear what neighborhood folks are going to put up with multiple times a day, let me remind you what it sounded like the day of the minaret capping:

Of course, this is the 21st century, there is no need for an amplified call to prayer. People have watches, cell phones and pagers now. This is proselytizing. To show you how things creep, let me remind you of a comment left by Miss Kelly on that post about the capping:

...I saw Salma Kazmi, former ISB spokesman, interviewed on Emily Rooney's show a few years ago, and she was asked about if the ISB was going to broadcast the call to prayer. She said "We have no plans to do that, at this time." Wiggle words!...

Wiggle words indeed.

Ron Newman, in the same thread, states (emphasis mine):

At yesterday's Workmen's Circle event, I asked Jessica Maase about the timing and volume of calls to prayer from the minaret.

She said that there would be no public calls to prayer audible outside the mosque at all, and that they had to get a special 'entertainment permit' from the city for the topping-off ceremony.

Another commenter followed up:

When Jessica Maase [Masse] states that "no public calls to prayer audible outside the mosque at all" she is being disingenuous at best. This tactic of starting prayers at a low volume than slowly raising the volume until the sound of the Muslim prayers are even able to penetrate solid concrete has been used around the world since the late 1970's...

So despite the fact that two previous spokespeople assured the public that there would be no calls broadcast outside the mosque, now that the structure is built plans have changed -- now that we'll have a battle of freedom of religion versus simple noise ordinances (Looks like a similar situation to that faced in Hamtramck, Michigan, where the City Council waved the noise ordinances in deference to the mosque there). This is how it happens...one step at a time.

Update 9-17-08: Robert Spencer comments on the story: Controversial Boston mosque run by Muslim Brotherhood opens, will broadcast call to prayer over loudspeaker

Update: 9-19-08: Miss Kelly has lots of important background and analysis on this here: ISB Mosque Controversy Fades - for the Boston Globe Maybe

"I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!"

I'd rather hear a Johnny Weismuller Tarzan call than that crap.

Enjoy the best.

Those calls can be jarring. A couple of years ago, I was visiting a Muslim country, and had the unpleasant sensation of being awakened at dawn in my hotel room by calls to prayer. The mosque wasn't even close by. That's right, those Boston residents may soon be hearing calls at dawn.

These calls are nothing but a way of establishing territory. I watched video of a cousin's bar mitzvah at the Western Wall...everyone just ignored it and kept going as an ear-splitting adhan blared out. There's no necessity for it. It's noise with a purpose.

Under Socialism minorities rule over majorities, violating their right to self-government. Socialism represents unjust government power which rules without the consent of the governed.

"Bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will, to be rightful, must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal laws must protect, and to violate would be oppression.” Thomas Jefferson

If the majority of people in this Boston district do not want the Muslim call to prayer, their will should justly prevail - as long as that will does not break existing local laws or laws of the United States.

Great work on amplifying this matter. I caught it on Jihad Watch this morning.
In perplexity, I asked myself when this first occurred, "Where were you?"
My heart drops, when I hear my answer, "Right here, only a mile away."
You with Ms Kelly and Pipes have done a remarkable job.
Thank you for your service.

If muslims accept 20th+ century "high-tech" call to prayer,

ie. the use of loud speakers, amplifiers, so the muzzeen does not climb to the top of the minarete 5 times a day,

certainly a cellphone call to prayer, vibrate mode, should be acceptable, and not an aural invasion of non-muslims.

Silent Jihad. This is a classic example. Every time radical Islam wins our hearts over by their whining about religious freedom we lose a bit of ground.

The writing is on the wall, people just refuse to read...

Get a bunch of friends together and gather in front of the Mosque every Friday to play loud non-muslim religious music. I highly recommend something Jewish.

I already know better than to placidly stand by and allow a mosque to be built in my neighborhood. If one got a permit, they'd get nightly deposits of pork products on the land (at the very least).

I tried to be open minded and accepting. Then I realized that acceptance of people who want to kill me is another form of suicide.

How about Christmas songs during December within earshot of the mosque.

Fair is CAIR.

Here is what is called out in the adhan, the call to “prayer”

Allah u Akbar, Allah u Akbar

(Allah is Great, Allah is Great)

Ash-hadu al-la Ilaha ill Allah-Ash-hadu al-la Ilaha ill Allah

(I bear witness that there is no divinity but Allah)

Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah

(I bear witness that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger)

Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah

(I bear witness that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger)

Hayya la-s-ssaleah – Hayya la-s-saleah

(Hasten to the prayer, Hasten to the prayer)

Hayya la-l-faleah- Hayya la-l-faleah

(Hasten to real success, Hasten to real success)

Allah u Akbar, Allah u Akbar

(Allah is Great, Allah is Great)

And Allah u Akbar, doesn't mean "God is great," the Qur'anic Allah not being the God of the Bible.
Actually it is Arabic for "Allah is Most Great," it is used on many occasions, be it the call to salat (“prayer”), when slaying animals for food, etc. as a form of confession or a calling out the name and rule of Allah over everything.
Very prominently, it is the rallying cry or battle cry among Muslims both in past and present times. As such, it is a statement asserting at the same time the superiority of Allah, Islam and Muslims over everyone else.
The Americans Nick Berg and Daniel Pearl, who were abducted and murdered in Iraq, were slaughtered in the same way as sheep during the Eid-el-Adha (“feast of the sacrifice”). Laid on his side, Mr. Berg's throat was cut while his killers repeated over and over again Allahu-Akhbar, Allahu-Akhbar, Allahu-Akhbar.
What a noxious thing it is, and because most westerners are clueless about Christianity and ignorant about Islam, they don’t know the difference between the God of the Bible and the Allah of the Qur’an.

Just who are Muslims "praying" to?

In India the Hindus will move the courts for restraining them from broadcasting the call. Why you do not do it? Get a stay.

Bow down to your new masters, Infidels.

Americans are weak. Your time is over.

Your leaders know you are sheep. Obey your leaders since you weak cowardly people can not think on your own nor survive on your own.

The people of Muhammed will own all that is eastern USA while the liberators crossing your southern border will create their new homeland in the western USA.

Together we will liberate your sick society.

Just obey and you will be treated well.

I will NOT "obey" your religion, just so I can be "treated well". That is crap.

I give extremely wide latitude in the posting of comments here -- the anonymity of the internet gets people crazy, and it also allows them to leave troll, moby (fake, meant to stir up trouble), comments, so I rarely edit them. I'm responsible solely for what I say, not what anyone else says. Yet I want to be clear that I totally disassociate myself and this blog from comments involving the use of violence as well as the indictment of all people who call themselves Muslims, many of whom are as much the victims of this mosque's leadership as anyone else.

Outrage over noise pollution and the deceptive conduct of mosque leadership is justified. Mayor and City Council should be held responsible, but talk of any illegal conduct, even if meant just to blow off steam in a blog comment thread, is beyond acceptable, counter-productive, and I won't let anyone associate me with it, which they will try to do, despite disclaimers.
