Isi Leibler: Europe has forsaken Israel - 'It was ironic but no surprise to learn that immediately after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's settlement freeze, the response of the Swedish head ofthe European Union was to preempt negotiations with the Palestinians and make further harsh demands upon the Israelis...'

This is tragic but hardly surprising.

Alas.

What to do? Is there anything we can do?

It's interesting to me that Obama seems to focusing Eastward - on India, China and even Russia.

I think he's seen that Europe is played out. I don't think it's alive anymore and politically it is becoming dangerous (again).

Am I wrong?

I'd like to believe in the virtues of Europe and not it's evil past, that the EU represents something modern and vital, but articles like this and others I read make me think otherwise.

Tragically though this just isolates not only Israel but other countries - North African states like Morocco and Tunisia and also Turkey - some elements of Lebanon - which are trying to remain a) alive b) part of the West and link to Europe.

But the internal polarization in some European countries and the lack of faith in Enlightenment values is frightening. In the not-so-distant past this has led to real horror.

We need Europe. Europe can't just slide back into the Dark Ages! but it looks like it's doing exactly that in a lot of ways.

Remember the victims of Pan Am 103
